R. A. Steffan

Author info: http://www.rasteffan.com

Author bio: R. A. Steffan began writing for pleasure in 2005. After honing her skills for a few years in amateur circles, she eventually transitioned into freelance nonfiction writing and ghostwriting professionally published short fiction. In 2015, she made the jump to publishing full-length novels and series.

Much to her surprise, her Horse Mistress series won a 2016 Rainbow Award, and was nominated for the 2017 Lambda Literary Awards. She has written titles in the paranormal romance, fantasy romance, sci-fi romance, and historical action/adventure genres.

When not writing, the author enjoys reading, horseback riding, walking her dogs, and raising a small backyard flock of ducks.

Book Title: Antidote: Love and War, Book 1

Paranormal romance or sci fi romance: SFR

They’re fighting the same battle. They just don’t know it yet.

Skye Chantrell has just escaped a war zone.

She’s carrying the stolen antidote to a deadly bioweapon.

When her damaged shuttle crashes on a remote lunar outpost, she’s captured by the leader of a rogue group of barbaric aliens. Now her people’s survival—not to mention her own—rests in the hands of the Seven Systems’ most feared and hated criminal.

A man with the face of a brutal thug, and the eyes of an angel.

* * *

Hunter Tarthasian has every reason to hate the Regime.

He and his comrades have gone rogue, vowing to use every means at their disposal to bring down the evil Premiere. Now, they’re hunted and on the run, holed up in an abandoned outpost while they plan their next move. The last thing Hunter needs is a female human civvy with a terrible secret crash-landing on his doorstep. Especially when she starts to awaken feelings in him which have no place in his life as a wanted fugitive.

Feelings that could very easily get all of them killed.

* * *

From award-winning author R. A. Steffan comes a sizzling new sci-fi romance series, perfect for fans of J. R. Ward and Sherrilyn Kenyon.

Strap in tight, because all’s fair in LOVE AND WAR.

Excerpt:

If I die now, everyone back home dies with me.I can’t die now.

“Oh, gods, I can’t die now.” The words were barely audible over the shriek of a space vessel pushed to its limit and beyond.

Skye Chantrell was not normally a religious woman, but there was something about the sight of a planet’s surface rushing far too quickly toward the cracked viewport of her stolen, rusted-out shuttle that brought the old superstitions flooding back.

Please, please, please, she prayed. Not now, not here, not like this!

When she’d fled the Regime’s complex at the border of the demilitarized zone, she’d barely managed to escape with her life. If the shuttle she’d taken hadn’t already been damaged and leaking fuel when she entered the wormhole gate at the edge of the system, her pursuers would have tracked her down and finished the job in no time at all. As it was, the craft’s malfunctioning engines had flung her randomly through the vortex before spitting her out here, in the gravitational well of an old, abandoned outpost on some unremarked, forgotten moon.

With no other options available, she ran through the emergency restart procedure one last time. Her breath locked in her throat as the aging thrusters coughed, sputtered, and fired weakly into life. She was thrown forward, hard, against her seat restraints as the engines tried to slow the descent, but she could tell it wasn’t… going… to be… enough…

Her father had entrusted her with the most important data file in the Seven Systems, at the cost of his own life. She hadn’t even had a chance to mourn him yet, and now she was going to join him.

She had failed, and that failure meant a death toll on a scale she could barely imagine. Her hands slid from the controls and fell to her sides.

“I’m so sorry, Daddy,” she whispered, as the ground raced up to meet her.

* * *

The alarm blared through the old lunar outpost, shrill and jarring. Hunter jerked his head up from the holographic star map he and Kade had been examining, meeting the other Vithii male’s cold gray eyes with a frown.

“Perimeter breach,” Kade said unnecessarily. The two of them moved toward the door as one, jogging side-by-side through a warren of dingy gray corridors toward the control room.

Hunter already had his comm unit out as they ran, and was barking into it. “Draven! What have we got?”

“Ilarian shuttle,” came the static-riddled reply. “Looks like Regime registration, but it’s outdated. They don’t use these codes anymore. It’s coming in hot—crash-landing trajectory. Engines are inactive.”

“Where?” Hunter snapped.

“About half a klick north of us,” Draven reported. “Just west of the big crater.”

They were nearly to the control room. “Right,” Hunter said. “Kade and I will be with you in a moment. Stand by.”

Kade’s voice was grim. “This could be bad.”

“Or it could be nothing,” Hunter countered. “It all depends on who else—if anyone—is following along behind our unlucky shuttle pilot.”

The only reply was a skeptical grunt.

Hunter slid to a stop in front of the heavy durasteel door and slapped his palm to the reader. The slab of metal screeched open on ancient tracks, exposing the simple control center beyond. Draven was alone, his massive, hard-muscled frame bent over the sensor interface. He glanced up as they entered, gold eyes glittering beneath his head of spiky copper-colored hair, then looked right back down again, intent on the screen before him.

“Kill that klaxon,” Hunter said. “I think we’ve all got the point by now. Is the shuttle down yet?”

Draven fumbled for the override without looking, and the shrieking alarm cut off. “Looks like the pilot managed to get the thrusters firing on emergency power. It’s veering southeast, closer to us.”

There was a low rumble, vibrating the deck plates under their boots. “That was it. It’s down,” Draven reported.

The door screeched open again, admitting Ryder and Pax. Pax immediately crossed to join Draven at the controls; his metallic facial implants glinting in the blue light of the readouts.Ryder—a strongly built Vithii woman with a head full of spiky red hair—turned to Kade and Hunter instead. “What the fuck was that?” she asked. “Meteor strike?”

Kade snorted. “Yeah, right. We should be so lucky.”

Hunter—who preferred to leave most of the sarcasm to Kade, who had a flair for it—filled Ryder in quickly on what they knew.

She frowned. “I don’t much like the idea that someone could have just randomly crashed on our doorstep. There’s no sign of other vessels approaching?”

“Not so far,” Draven said. “Looks like your standard engine malfunction. Which is not to say that no one was after them. I don’t know about you, but when I see a rusted out piece of junk with bad ID codes, I think stolen.”

Kade raised a dark, sardonic brow. “Maybe they came to the right place after all, in that case. Assuming they’re not charred meat now, of course.”

Hunter brought his focus back to the matter at hand. “Life signs?”

“Weak,” Draven reported. “Human. Just one, looks like.”

Hunter’s brow furrowed. What was a human doing with a possibly stolen Regime shuttle, way out here in the badlands?

R. A. Steffan Interview

  1. Where do you get your book ideas?  Anywhere and everywhere. I daydream about stuff that becomes the basis of a future book all the time. Often, I will think of a particularly dramatic scene, or even a line or two of dialogue. Then, the rest of the book grows organically around it as I figure out what might have happened to lead up to the point, and what the consequences of that scene will be. Getting new ideas has never been a problem for me.
  2. Do you write an outline to start or just start writing?  I outline. I used to just do a synopsis of a few hundred words before diving in, but frankly, outlining works better. Fewer loose threads and inconsistencies to tidy up afterward.
  3. How long does it normally take to write the book before edits? During the golden age of my “day job” unemployment last year, I wrote one 50-70,000-word novel per month. My current series has long books, and these days, it’s taking me at least three months to get a 100,000-word draft done.
  4. Are you an indie author or mainstream author?I’m indie. I like actually getting paid a respectable amount of money for my writing. That said, if I wasn’t willing to be a marketer and businesswoman on top of being a writer, I’d be just as poor as if I was trad-pubbed. It’s not for everyone.
  5. How did you get started, can you give people wanting to write an idea how to get started? I come from a fan fiction background. From there, I became a ghostwriter, then a content writer (non-fiction), and finally, a fiction writer under my own name.

As far as how to get started:

1) Write. You must have a product to market, or you’ll never get anywhere.

2) Write things that people want to read. I sort of cobbled together a genre that doesn’t actually exist for the first two book series I wrote, and set myself up for an uphill battle to market the books. I made it work, sort of, but I would strongly recommend against it.

3) Commission an amazing cover that looks exactly like all the other covers in your genre, but, y’know, better. Be prepared to pay a fair amount of money for this. (If you’re not sure what your genre is, see #2.)

4) Get your manuscript professionally edited.

5) Grow a mailing list of people interested in your work by writing something related to your books that you give away in exchange for an email address. Prequel novellas work well for me. I have them professionally recorded as audiobooks and stream them free on my websites, as well as offering them as an e-book download.

6) Stay abreast of the latest trends in the industry so you can become an early adopter. That’s the true beauty of indie publishing, as opposed to trad-pub.

7) Always keep your rights unless selling them is a financial no-brainer. Be wary of exclusivity agreements. (Looking at you, Kindle Unlimited…)

8) Expect to work your butt off for a few years before becoming an “overnight success.” Expect the people in your life to have no clue that being an author requires more than sipping margaritas on the beach and tapping out a few hundred words here and there as the mood strikes.

That’s okay, though, because the feeling when someone you’ve never met draws fan art of one of your characters and posts it on Twitter is not the kind of thing that can be bought with money. There are more rewards to writing than the purely financial.

REVIEW: Truck Stop Tryst by Krissy Daniels (99 cents!)

Title: Truck Stop Tryst
Author: Krissy Daniels
Genre: Contemporary Romance/Romantic Suspense

Release Date: July 11, 2017
Hosted by: Buoni Amici Press, LLC.

Aida Voltolini. Mob princess with a knife fetish. Pregnant heir to a deadly throne.
I couldn’t resist her laugh. I was defenseless against those damn doe eyes. I meant to stay away.
But then…
she kissed me.
Tucker Slade. Country boy with a heart of gold. A beautiful distraction with a dark secret. He was only meant to be a tryst.
But then…
that kiss. Oh, that kiss.

AMAZON:  Truck Stop Tryst

“I think this friendship thing is going to be fun.” Aida laughed, dabbing antibacterial goo on my lip with a cotton swab.
I’d never seen her so animated. It was inspiring, in a perverted way, listening to her babble about dicing onions and slicing skinheads, like they were normal, everyday tasks.
“Think I’ll need stitches?” I managed to mumble through my swollen lip.
I was seated on her bathroom toilet. Aida scooted between my knees, cupped my jaw and tilted my head up, inspecting the wound below my eye. “It’s iffy. If you don’t mind a kick-ass scar on your pretty mug, I’d say, no, it’s not necessary.”
Still holding my face, she studied my mouth. “It’ll scar either way, but your call. It’s clean. I’ve got skin adhesive we could use.”
It was hard to focus with her breasts in my face. I dug my nails into my thighs to keep from wrapping my arms around her hips and pulling her closer.
“Do what you gotta do, Doc,” I mumbled.
She stared down at me with those enormous brown eyes, and swear to Christ, she wanted to kiss me. I wanted her to kiss me. I wanted to taste those lips she’d been licking and biting for the past fifteen minutes.
A lip-lock would’ve hurt like hell in my current physical condition, so instead I asked, “Do I want to know why you have skin adhesive at your disposal?”
To which she replied, “No.”
“You’re good at this.”
“What?” she asked, eyes squinty, focused on my face.
“Taking care of wounds. You’ve done this a lot?”
“More times than I care to count.”
“Because you dated fighters?”
She sighed and rolled her eyes. “Because I’m the daughter of a gangster. There,” she said, stepping back to inspect her work, “good as new. Now, let’s get some ice on that lip, shall we?”

REVIEW:

I absolutely loved Aida and Tucker’s story.  Aida is sent into hiding by her mafia daddy to stay with Tango and Slade.  Tucker is Slade’s brother and he and Aida are like oil and water but they are attracted to each other.  Aida thinks she is there for only a short time and Tucker has secrets.  Aida is good with knives as protection and I loved what she did to her cheating baby daddy.  You will absolutely LOVE this book!!! 5 stars!!!

Aside from being an author, Krissy is an avid reader with an unhealthy obsession for dark and dirty romance.
She lives in Seattle with her husband, children, and too many four-legged, furry monsters. The only thing she loves more than curling up with a steamy romance novel is cozying up to her desk and writing her own sexy adventures to share with others.

Mike Stewart is a bad boy.
Sleeping around. Boozing. Fighting with teammates.
Name a bad behavior and he’s done it—done it so well, in fact, that he almost tanked his career as a starting defensemen for the NHL’s San Francisco Gold.
But Mike is done with all that. He’s starting with a fresh foot forward and putting his past behind him.
That is, until his past quite literally reappears before his eyes.
Sara Jetty is just as beautiful as she was a decade before, but Mike hasn’t seen her since she left for her first Olympics and scored a gold medal in women’s figure skating. Now something has put shadows in her eyes, a familiar type of hurt he is all too well versed in.
This Sara wants nothing to do with him. Their easy friendship is gone and in its place is a hardened woman who’s nothing like the girl from his past.
Still, Mike hasn’t become a top defensemen in the NHL by being afraid of hard work, and he isn’t about to let Sara push him away. Come hell or high water, he’s going to crack her tough outer shell and find the sweet, innocent woman he’s lusted after and loved, in equal measure, for more than ten years.

GENRE: Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher and his team are called to Savannah, Georgia, when body parts belonging to three separate victims are recovered from the Little Ogeechee River. As the case takes one dark turn after another, Brandon finds himself embroiled in a creepy psychological nightmare.
Excerpt:
PERIMETER MALL, ATLANTA, GEORGIA
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 11:30 AM EASTERN
THE TIME HAD COME TO select his next victim. He had to choose carefully and perfectly—he wouldn’t get a second chance. The mall was teeming with life, and that made for a lot of eyeballs, a lot of potential witnesses. But he supposed it also helped him be more inconspicuous. People were hustling through the shopping center, interested solely in their own agendas. They wouldn’t be paying him—or what he was doing—much attention.
He was standing at the edge of the food court next to the hallway leading to the restrooms eating a gyro. The lidded and oversized garbage bin on wheels that was behind him would ensure that anyone who did notice him would just think he was a mall janitor on his lunch break.
The pitchy voice of a girl about eight hit his ears. “Daddy, I want ice cream.”
Trailing not far behind her were a man and woman holding hands. The woman was fit and blond, but his attention was on the man beside her. He was in his twenties, easily six feet tall with a solid, athletic build. He’d be strong and put up a fight. Yes, this was the one. And talk about ideal placement—he was across from the Dairy Queen.
He wiped his palms on his coveralls and took a few deep breaths. What he was about to do wasn’t because of who he was, but rather, because he had to do it.
And he had to hurry. The family was coming toward him.
“It’s almost lunchtime,” the woman said, letting go of the man’s hand.
“Daaaaaaddyyyyy.” A whiny petition.
The man looked to the woman with a smile that showcased his white teeth. “We could have ice cream for lunch?”
The little girl began to bounce. “Yeah!”
“Really, Eric?” The woman wasn’t as impressed as the girl, but under the man’s gaze she caved and smiled. “All right, but just today…”
“Thank you, Mommy!” The girl wrapped her arms around the woman’s legs but quickly let go, prancing ahead of her parents and toward the DQ counter.
“Brianna, we wash our hands first.” The woman glanced at him as she walked by and offered a reserved smile. Had she detected his interest in them?
Breathe. She thinks you work here, remember?
Smile back.
 Remain calm.
 Look away and act uninterested.
REVIEW:
Brandon Fisher of the FBI has another case, a serial killer in Savannah, GA.  I loved the way the author portrays the characters of the FBI unit.  You get a feel for them and their emotions as they work to solve the case and get closure for the families.  The wanted person in this story is sick and that’s all I will tell you about him.  You need a strong stomach with some of the mental images the author gives us, but if you love mystery and suspense (think Criminal Minds) you will love this book and the series.
POST WITH CAROLYN ARNOLD
Meet today’s guest, Carolyn Arnold. She is an international bestselling and award-winning author, as well as a speaker, teacher, and inspirational mentor. She has four continuing fiction series and has written nearly thirty books. Both her female detective and FBI profiler series have been praised by those in law enforcement as being accurate and entertaining, leading her to adopt the trademark, POLICE PROCEDURALS RESPECTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT™.
 Today, she answers a few questions for us and gives us insight into her life and journey as a mystery author.
Have you ever been on a manhunt or at the scene where a dead body was found?
I took part in my local police department’s Citizen’s Academy. As part of this, I received an inside look at seventeen divisions over a ten-week period. As an added benefit, each student was afforded a ride-along. And mine… Well, I went on the perfect one for a crime writer.
My ride-along actually started out with a manhunt. I experienced the excitement of wanting to find the guy and found myself scrutinizing every male I spotted in the area just to make sure he wasn’t the one we were after. Unfortunately, the search moved to the downtown area from the eastern end of the city where the hunt had begun, and the sergeant signed off the investigation. By the end of my ride-along, about five hours later, the man still hadn’t been found.
After the sergeant left the investigation, he turned to me as he was driving and asked if I had ever seen a dead body. I told him I had at memorials and funerals and then asked why. I soon found out that our next stop involved one.
I figured I’d catch a glimpse of the deceased under a tarp or being wheeled away, but I got far more than that. I received a front-row seat to a death investigation. For hours, the sergeant and I were mere feet away from the body. I witnessed firsthand how it changed color over time, but I also found that I went into detective-mode. The forensic identification unit—essentially CSIs—was called in and arrived with collection kits. The team members gloved up, snapped photographs, took fingerprints from the deceased, and more.
The entire time that I was on scene, I noticed myself going into a detached state—the result of adrenaline. Later that evening, it began to sink in that I had spent hours with a dead body, and I was nauseated. As more time passed, I became weepy as it sank in that the deceased had been a husband, a father, a lover, a friend…a person. That night I dreamed about the man. It wasn’t a nightmare, but I was an officer trying to figure out what had happened to him.
I couldn’t imagine returning to the field the next day and having a similar experience or witnessing something even worse, like a violent murder scene or that of a fatal car accident.
What do members of law enforcement say about your books?
Many testimonials attest that I am pleasing readers in law enforcement. They love that my mysteries are accurate in that regard, and they view that alone as a sign of my respect for them.
Here are a few testimonials that I have received on Eleven (Brandon Fisher FBI series):
“I spent thirty-eight years with a major police department in Missouri, fifteen of which were in the homicide section. I also had numerous dealings with the FBI throughout my career, mostly bank robbery, interstate shipment thefts, and a few kidnappings. Eleven kept my interest piqued throughout… Loved it.”
Richard Bartram, Sergeant (retired), St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, St. Louis, MO
“I am a forty-year veteran of police work. All local, no Fed. Eleven was a great read. All the descriptors and nomenclature were spot on.”
–Joe Danna, Police Officer, Katy Independent School District Police Department, Katy, TX
“Very good! I worked as a police officer for eleven years and with the Federal Bureau of Prisons for twenty-two. I have also dealt with the FBI.”
–Richard Smith, Facilities Development Manager (retired), Federal Bureau of Prisons, Central Office, Washington, DC
“A great police procedural! … Full of twists and turns. The characters are well-developed and a mix of interesting personalities. … Holds your interest to the end!”
–Mark Davis, FBI Special Agent (retired), Washington, DC
What did you do before you became a bestselling author?
For a living, I worked in accounts receivable for a few different companies collecting from businesses. Yet, despite working full time, in 2006 I was reunited with writing. I wrote every chance I got—before work, on lunch breaks, after work, on the weekends. I became so focused on writing and the publishing world that hardly a day went by without them being a part of my life, and since the summer of 2014, I’ve been a full-time author.
How do you know so much about what criminals think?
I can’t answer that without incriminating myself… Just kidding.
Everyone has what we call a “dark side.” In writing these books, I suppose you could say I tap into this side of my psyche. Whatever I can scheme up is possible, and I write that which scares and excites me.
When did you know that you had hit the big time with your books?
When I got to say good-bye to my day job! Even before I fully resigned, I had cut back a five-day a week job to four days, then to three. It got to the point, though, that I loathed going in for that many days, and I knew it was time to make the move and become a full-time author. That was in the summer of 2014. Since then, I incorporated my own publishing company in the summer of 2015, and, at the start of 2016, my husband joined me there full time.
Here’s what Remnants is about:
All that remains are whispers of the past…
When multiple body parts are recovered from the Little Ogeechee River in Savannah, Georgia, local law enforcement calls in FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher and his team to investigate. But with the remains pointing to three separate victims, this isn’t proving to be an open-and-shut case.
With no quick means of identifying the victims, building a profile of this serial killer is proving more challenging than usual. How is the killer picking these victims? Why are their limbs being severed and bodies mutilated? And what is it about them that is triggering this killer to murder?
The questions compound as the body count continues to rise, and when a torso painted blue and missing its heart is found, the case takes an even darker turn. But this is only the beginning, and these new leads draw the FBI into a creepy psychological nightmare. One thing is clear, though: the killing isn’t going to stop until they figure it all out. And they are running out of time…
The Brandon Fisher FBI series is a perfect fit for you if serial killers and the FBI fascinate you, if you like getting inside the minds of killers, love being creeped out, sleeping with your eyes open, and feeling like you’re involved in murder investigations. If this speaks to you, then join FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher and his team with the Behavioral Analysis Unit in their hunt for serial killers.
This is the perfect book series for fans of Criminal MindsNCIS, Silence of the Lambs, Seven, Dexter, Luther, and True Crime.
BLURB: How Do You Know?
On the eve of her thirty-ninth birthday, Maggie Piper doesn’t look, act, or feel much different than she did at twenty-nine, but with her fortieth birthday speeding toward her like a freight train, she wonders if she should. The fear of a slowing metabolism, wrinkling of her skin, and the ticking of her biological clock leaves Maggie torn between a desire to settle down like most of her similarly-aged peers and concern that all is not perfect in her existing relationship. When a spontaneous request for a temporary break from her live-in boyfriend results in a breakup, Maggie finds herself single once again and only twelve months from the big 4.0.
As Maggie reenters the New York City dating jungle, suitors present themselves quickly, but who is “The One?” Is he a sexy coworker, one of many bachelors at a speed-dating event, or is he the man she already set free? How do you know? Her fun-loving friends and supportive family, including meddlesome “no-filter” Aunt Helen, eagerly share their (often unsolicited) opinions, but Maggie is determined to find her own way, even if she falls on her face—repeatedly.
Excerpt:
“I think we should break up, Maggie.”
My body involuntarily jerks at his words, and I grip the table for support. “You mean permanently or a temporary break?”
“It’s been three years, Maggie. If you’re not sure I’m the one by now, chances are I’m not. I don’t want to waste more of your time.” He pauses. “Or mine. I’ll hunt for a new apartment.”
I swallow back my tears. This is not how I imagined the night would unfold. “Are you sure you want to do this?”
Doug gives a slight shake of his head. “I’m sure I don’t want to do this. But I’m also sure I have to. I’ll stay with Connor tonight and pack up some of my stuff while you’re at your mom’s tomorrow night.”
I try to imagine my family’s reaction to hearing Doug and I broke up, and that he moved out to live with his older brother. I can’t. I’m pretty certain my own reaction will be delayed since I currently feel like this is happening to someone else.
Doug continues speaking. “I’ll take care of the bill. You should get out of here.”
“I can’t let you pay for all of this.” I point at the uneaten food. “I ruined my birthday, and now you’re going to pay for it?”
Doug drops his credit card on the table. “Your birthday was Tuesday so, no, you didn’t ruin it. But you did break my heart.”
“Doug…”
Not meeting my gaze, he says, “Just go, Maggie.”
I stand up but linger. I don’t want it to end this way.
“Please, Maggie. Go.”
New Release Review: IN THE LINE OF DUTY By Carolyn Arnold
in-the-line-of-duty-sizzling-pr-banner
Police are People Too
“You experience the emotions, distractions, frustrations and successes of the characters in every chapter of In the Line of Duty. I found her heartfelt details to be spot on with a line-of-duty death. Being able to put such a tragic situation into words, is difficult in itself, but she does it with compassion, knowledge and respect for those in uniform who know what it is like to lose a brother or sister in blue.”
— Carl J. Harper, Training Officer, ERT (SWAT)
Cover
Sadly, as humans, we tend to judge that which we don’t understand. And let’s be honest, most of us haven’t stood in the shoes of a police officer. We’ve never faced an armed subject at one o’clock in the morning or had to make life-and-death decisions on a daily basis. We’ve never had to focus in a traumatic situation and make a significant judgment call. We’ve never had to face families and friends who have been left behind and tell them that their loved one won’t be coming home.
In general, people either point fingers at the police or put them up on pedestals. No one is perfect, however, and sometimes that pedestal cracks. Instead of doing either of these things, though, I think it’s most important that we respect our law enforcement officers and accept that they are human, just like the rest of us. They have families and friends. They have feelings. They have hopes and dreams.
In the Line of Duty was inspired by my love of law enforcement, for those who serve and who have served, but I also wanted to write a book that showed the human side of policing. I wanted to paint a vivid picture that shows that police are people and illustrate how the loss of a brother in blue affects them—not only on a professional level but more importantly, on a personal one.
The characters in my book must carry on after a great loss to find the person who killed their fellow officer. Their grief tears apart relationships, changes people’s viewpoints, and has them acknowledging their own mortality, just as it would anyone.
So the next time you see a police officer, remind yourself that police are people, too, and deserve the same compassion and kindness as you or me.
–Carolyn Arnold
Author of In the Line of Duty (Detective Madison Knight series)
Excerpt from In the Line of Duty, Chapter 3:
Troy gripped the sink in the men’s washroom at the Stiles police station with both hands and stared at himself in the mirror. He’d lost men close to him before. The last one was two years ago, and the officer had been killed in a car accident while off duty. He’d left behind two kids and a wife. But Barry…he was different. Life always equaled death, of course. It was a simple equation to accept until it touched close to home. And that’s what Barry’s death was for him–personal.
Losing Barry made it clear just how dangerous this job could be and how fragile life was. One minute here, the next gone. Barry had just been pumping gas, a routine thing, something people did all the time without any thought to their safety. Those on the outside would say that’s the risk he took being in law enforcement. Yes, there was the chance any one of them wouldn’t return home from a shift, but it wasn’t something Troy consciously thought about before heading to work.
In fact, when serving in a SWAT capacity, he’d say it was one of the safest positions within the Stiles PD. SWAT had the toys, and when they showed up to manage a situation, it was often brought under control rather quickly. Even the majority of criminals didn’t want to tango with an AR-15 and armored vehicles. Besides, dwelling on one’s mortality wasn’t healthy. But when something like this happened to one of their own, it spurred on such self-reflection. It could have easily been him in the morgue, or one of his team members. Or Madison…
His insides quivered with rage as his heartbeat slowed with his grief. He squeezed his eyes shut.
“I’ve got Dad’s car tonight,” Barry says. “We’ll take it out on the back roads and see what she’s really capable of.”
“Your dad’s a cop, Barry,” Troy reminds him.
“So? What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.” Barry takes a few steps down the hall of their high school but stops and spins when Troy doesn’t follow. “Come on, man. Don’t make me take Lyman.”
Troy came back from his thoughts and opened his eyes to find himself staring at his reflection.
That night had been one of the best ever. Barry had sent the car airborne by racing over the railway tracks on the outskirts of the city. They’d even conned some seniors into getting beer for them and drank it by the tracks later that night.
Barry had made Troy feel alive…
Pain knotted in his chest, the regrets over skipping drinks with Barry last week paired with losing a part of his childhood somehow.
Troy pinched the bridge of his nose as the memories continued to rush over him.
“I just got my acceptance letter.” Barry holds the envelope in his hand. “This college has the hottest chicks… Not that it would matter to you.”
“What does that mean?”
“It’s Lauren and Troy sitting in a tree…” Barry sings.
“Seriously? You’re like a girl sometimes, you know that? A big, emotional girl.”
“Hey!” Barry punches him playfully in the arm.
Madison punched him in the arm sometimes, too…
God, what would he have done if Madison were the one who’d been killed?
About In the Line of Duty:
He devoted his life to seeking justice. But would she get any for him?
It was an ordinary day for police officer Barry Weir. It was the end of shift, he was tired, and he just wanted to get home to his wife and kids. But someone had other plans for him, shooting him down and forcing him to make the ultimate sacrifice.
When news of Weir’s murder reaches the precinct, it leaves Detective Madison Knight and every cop in the Stiles PD itching for revenge. It cuts Madison’s boyfriend, colleague, and Weir’s childhood friend, Troy Matthews, deepest of all, driving him away from everyone he loves just when they need one another the most.
With evidence pointing to a gang-related drive-by, Madison and her team investigate the town’s seedy underbelly in search of justice for their fallen brother. But the deeper they dig, the more convoluted the case becomes. Now they need to figure out if this was a random shooting as part of a gang initiation, a straight-up hate crime, or a targeted kill. But with members of the Stiles PD under attack, they have to do it fast…before more officers pay with their lives.
REVIEW:
This story was gut wrenching with the emotions of the police officers an an officer goes down.  Madison vows to catch the shooter but the leads are all over the place.  Madison and Troy’s relationship suffers as he shuts her out as the officer shot was his best childhood friend.   The author did a wonderful job with the characters and their reactions and the bread crumb clues leave you entertained while not letting you know who did it.  This is one series you won’t know who did it until the END!
Author Spotlight: Emily O’Beirne: Young Adult Romances
Emily OBeirne
Thirteen-year-old Emily woke up one morning with a sudden itch to write her first novel. All day, she sat through her classes, feverishly scribbling away (her rare silence probably a cherished respite for her teachers). And by the time the last bell rang, she had penned fifteen handwritten pages of angsty drivel, replete with blood-red sunsets, moody saxophone music playing somewhere far off in the night, and abandoned whiskey bottles rolling across tables. Needless to say, that singular literary accomplishment is buried in a box somewhere, ready for her later amusement.
From Melbourne, Australia, Emily was recently granted her PhD. She works part-time in academia, where she hates marking papers but loves working with her students. She also loves where she lives but travels as much as possible and tends to harbour crushes on cities more than on people.
Points of Departure
cover_Points-of-Departure_500x800
In this young adult novel friends Kit and Liza have been looking forward to this trip forever.
Five girls, five tickets overseas. It’s exactly what they all need after the final slog of high school. But when Kit is suddenly forced to drop out, Liza’s left with three girls she barely knows.
There’s Mai, committed only to partying. There’s Tam, who already has her doubts about leaving her sick father behind. And there’s Olivia, so miserable about screwing up exams she’s not even sure she wants to get out of bed, let alone on a plane.
All Liza wants from this trip is to discover a new version of herself. She just hadn’t planned on doing it without Kit by her side.
And they’re all learning that travel isn’t just about the places you go, but about who you’re with at the time.
A Story of Now
cover_A-Story-of_Now_500x800
Nineteen-year-old Claire Pearson knows she needs a life. And some new friends.
But brittle, beautiful, and just a little bit too sassy for her own good sometimes, she no longer makes friends easily. And she has no clue where to start on the whole finding a life front, either. Not after a confidence-shattering year dogged by bad break-ups, friends who have become strangers, and her constant failure to meet her parents sky-high expectations.
When Robbie and Mia walk into Claire’s work they seem the least likely people to help her find a life. But despite Claire’s initial attempts to alienate them, an unexpected new friendship develops.
And it’s the warm, brilliant Mia who seems to get Claire like no one has before. Soon, Claire begins to question her feelings for her new friend.
The Sum of These Things
cover_The-Sum-Of-These-Things_500x800
In the sequel to A Story of Now, Claire Pearson has already learned a few things this summer. Like falling for a girl is easy. Well, it is if that girl is Mia.
What Claire hasn’t learned yet is that now comes the hard part: learning to trust in this new relationship. And that isn’t easy when no one has ever given you a reason to trust before.
Then there’s the pressing question of what to do with her life. Claire’s new volunteer job working with kids offers a glimpse of a potential future, but it definitely isn’t something her pushy mother is going to like.
Still, everything feels hopeful as she embarks on the next chapter of her life, armed with new friends and the warm and funny Mia. But Claire quickly discovers that negotiating this new terrain of adulthood isn’t easy. Over the rest of this momentous summer, the biggest lesson Claire must learn is how not to let anything get in the way of her happiness. Especially herself.
Violated (Brandon Fisher FBI) By Carolyn Arnold (Author Spotlight)
BOOK OVERVIEW
Sometimes the past should stay there…
The murder is one of the most heinous FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher has ever seen. But that’s not why he and two members of the team are rushing to California. The Bureau is interested because the prime suspect is one of their own, Paige Dawson.
But Paige didn’t go to Valencia to kill anyone. She had set out on “vacation”—her new lover in tow—only to confront the man who raped her friend twenty-some years ago. While the hands of the law are tied, she wants him to face the fact that he destroyed a young woman’s life and know that, as an FBI agent, she’ll be watching his every move. Yet, instead of accomplishing her goal, she wound up in the back of a police cruiser.
Now Paige must face off with a hard-nosed detective determined to stick a murder charge to a fed. But with the trained eyes of the FBI on the case, it’s becoming more and more obvious that the evidence lends itself to a serial killing, not an isolated incident. And as long as the local authorities are focused on Paige, the real murderer is still out there, possibly waiting to strike again…
Excerpt from Chapter 4
Paige blinked the tears from her eyes. It couldn’t be. She wiped her wet eyes, her gaze not leaving the necklace in her hand. The chain was a common style, but the heart pendant and the letter N
Still, it didn’t mean this one had been Natasha’s…
Paige swallowed. But she remembered when Natasha had realized she’d lost it. She had dropped on the end of the hotel bed as if all the weight of the world were piled on her shoulders. It was the morning after the rape.
Tears now fell freely down Paige’s cheeks. There was no doubt in her mind that the necklace she now held had been Natasha’s.
Paige cried as the past washed over her and continued to do so until rage replaced her sadness.
Somehow, she would make this son of a bitch pay for what he had done. She was past the point of keeping within the shades of the law and would circumvent legal means if that’s what it took to hold him responsible.
She clasped the necklace around her neck. Had Ferris kept it as some sort of sick notch in his bedpost? If so, that showed a psychology to him that confirmed he was a repeat offender. And if that was his mentality, prison wouldn’t have rehabilitated him, and that meant there were likely date-rape drugs here to prove it.
She stormed from the bedroom and toward the bathroom.
Beyond the point of caring anymore if she left her fingerprints behind, she emptied the contents of the medicine cabinet, and his toiletries now filled the sink.
Nothing.
She rushed back to his bedroom and tore it apart. The drugs were here somewhere. A man like Ferris wouldn’t stop raping…
Several minutes passed as she searched, and when she was finished, his bedroom looked like a tornado had struck. But still no pills.
Maybe she was being ridiculous, hoping to find something where there was nothing. And even if she found the drugs, what did she hope to accomplish? While possession of date-rape drugs was illegal, her means of getting them would make them inadmissible in any court. But she couldn’t stop. All she could see was her friend’s body in that casket—the way her face, even in death, showed her tortured existence.
She hurried downstairs to the kitchen. There was no way she was stopping now.
She searched each cupboard and drawer, pulling out items and rooting to the back. She had one place left to look, and as she opened it, she saw that it was a catchall drawer. Stuffed with anything and everything from a meat thermometer, to sandwich bags, to tin foil, to… She pulled out a sleeve of pills. She flipped them and read the stamp on the silver backing. Allergy pills.
She continued working through the contents of the drawer until she reached the last item. It was an Aleve bottle. That was an inconvenient place to keep a pain reliever… She opened it and looked inside. It was only the medication. She was still holding the bottle in her hand when she recalled the one on the counter. She exchanged one for the other, not about to give up. Just because the bottle was labeled one way… She twisted the lid.
Police sirens wailed somewhere nearby, and she paused. Her instinct told her to leave this alone and get out of his house immediately. But it was too late, the whooping sirens were on top of her now, and then the patio door slid open on the other side of the dining room. Two police officers entered the house, guns drawn.
“Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Department! Put your hands on your head!”
“What’s—” The strength drained from her legs, and her head spun. She was under arrest?
Oh God. That woman must have called the police.
 “I said, put your hands on your head!” the same officer shouted.
Another officer went around behind her, stripped her of her gun, passed it off to the second officer, and proceeded to cuff her. “You have the right to remain silent—”
“This isn’t what it looks like.”
“It looks like you’re ransacking the house of a dead man.”
A dead man?
“I’m an FBI agent. I can explain—”
“You can do that down at the station.”
Artist Sarah Sculley – IndieLove Magazine Article
NYT bestselling Author Nashoda Rose Interview with IndieLove Magazine
When was it that you decided that being an artist was your calling?
Yesterday. True! I graduated from the Queensland College of Art in 2002 as one of many fresh-faced graphic designers. As the years went on, the briefs came in, the changes, and changes, and late nights, and more changes, and the all-nighters, more changes and then having my creative ideas smooshed, I decided that maybe being a graphic designer was a bit soul destroying. So I painted and created as an outlet.
I showed my work when I lived in China and had sell-out shows. When I moved home to Brisbane I thought I had to become a grown-up. Buy a house, settle down, procreate – all those picket-fence, 2.5 kids ideals. Silly me. I worked my tail off as a designer for a company that ended up making me redundant, one week before I was due back from maternity leave. It was an amazing blessing. It gave me the time, creativity and freedom to put everything I had into a solo show at Jugglers earlier this year. In my eyes, it was a massive success. I am entirely proud.
Since that show I’ve had so many opportunities become available for me to truly do what I believe is my calling – art. Yesterday was the first spare second I’ve had to sit down and think ‘oh my, everything is falling into place. I’m entirely happy, grateful and I feel like the real me. The universe is working with me and right here and now is where I am meant to be.’ This is that happiness that everyone has been talking about! Huh!
GENRE: Romantic comedy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Aimee Sherwood never dreamed that following her fiancé into the witness protection program would land her in a haunted house in a town that’s downright creepy. She’d have laughed if she had been told the guy who lives down the road might be her soul mate, not the man whose ring she’s wearing. Life in West Virginia is nothing like life in Los Angeles, but between bean ball battles with Marilyn Monroe, remodeling a crumbling farmhouse, and starting a new online business, life in the country is anything but boring.

Excerpt:

Without warning the blonde jerked the plastic container away from Aimee. It scooted across the table and crashed into a gelatin salad, taking a corner off its molded perfection. The blue bean balls went everywhere, rolling around the table like marbles on steroids. ”Look what you’ve done,” the blonde wailed. “Nobody will want to eat them now.”

She snatched a bean ball and hurled it at Aimee, who ducked just in time. “You missed me,” she taunted. She had no sooner finished speaking before a second bean ball flew through the air. This one caught the shoulder of her new blouse.

The blonde laughed.

Aimee grabbed a bean ball from the table and threw it at the blonde. She hit the woman right in the chest. “Help me!” the blonde shrieked. “She hit me in the heart. Where’s the sheriff?”

From the corner of her eye, Aimee saw the priest hurrying their way. She fired one final bean ball, which hit the blonde’s forehead with a beany thud.

Rocky grabbed her arm. “They’re circling the wagons. Let’s get out of here.”

Practically running, they made their escape from the church. Rocky took the precaution of locking the truck doors. He sighed. “I guess we can’t come back to this church either. Are we going to become atheists?”

“Of course not!”

Q&A with Elaine Cantrell

Where do you get your book ideas?
Everywhere! Sometimes I’ll be listening to some music, and a certain phrase or tune will give me an idea. Maybe someone says something intriguing, and I’m thinking what if… Ideas are everywhere if you just look for them. Even my own obsessions provide ideas. For example, I love home renovation so Fortuna, the house for which the book is named, needs major renovation.
Do you write outline to start or just start writing?
Up until now, I just sat down and started writing, but the book I’m working on now is requiring a little more planning. I’m not sure exactly why, but I’m actually making a list of scenes to write. I still prefer to just sit down and write, but I guess I can adjust this time.
How long does it normally take to write the book before edits?
Oh, not long at all. Every time I start a new book I get so excited and energized that there aren’t enough hours in the day to write. I can write a 60-70 thousand word book in a couple of months, but then come the edits. Groan. They take far longer than the first draft of the book.
Are you an indie author or mainstream author?
If an Indie author is an author who either self published or was published by a small publisher, then I’m indie. I’ve never self published because it looks awfully long and complicated. All of my books are published by small publishers.
How did you get started, can you give people wanting to write an idea how to get started?
I started writing when my son asked me to read a book he’d written. It was a great book, and it made me think. I’d always wanted to be an author so I decided I’d see if I could write too. I sat down and it took forever to get the opening scene down, but I finally did it.

Not long after I finished my second book, I heard about a writing contest sponsored by Oak Tree Press. At the last minute I decided to submit my manuscript. I mailed it off and promptly forgot about it.

A few months later I was eating ice cream when the phone rang. It was the publisher of Oak Tree Press who told me I’d won the Timeless Love contest. My prize? Publication of my story. I was so excited I forgot to put up the ice cream, and it melted everywhere.

If you’re interested in being an author, decide what kind of book you want to write, and then just sit down and write it. If you have a particular publisher you’d like to write for, read some of their books to get an idea what they like. Above all, polish that story until it sparkles.
