Bella Chan is a good girl surrounded by alpha-males who aren’t afraid of danger. Unfortunately, that danger comes back to bite her. She can still feel the deadly grip of Hazeem’s hands wrapped around her neck. If Jack hadn’t shown up at Savage Security, she’d be dead. Then, in pure alpha-male fashion, Jack appoints himself her personal bodyguard, but Bella soon realizes that Jack isn’t there to protect her. He’s there to win her heart.
And now, in the aftermath of the attack, the men of Savage Security band together to hunt down the terrorists living on American soil. As they navigate through the intrigue and deception that camouflages their assailants, they also confront the treason that threatens the Nation’s defenses.
EXCERPT:

Bella opened the door and stepped into Jack’s office. His arms were raised as he pulled a t-shirt over his head. At the sight of his bare chest, her heart raced as heat flooded her. She’d never seen him with his shirt off. His pecs and abs were clearly defined by hard ridges of muscle. A dusting of light hair covered his chest. A happy trail descended from his bellybutton and disappeared into his cargo pants.

Jack caught Bella’s heated gaze as he eased the shirt down his torso. If she didn’t stop staring at him like that he would pull his shirt off again and let her explore his body with more than just her eyes.

Rolling his shoulders to adjust the fit of the t-shirt as he tugged on the hem, he enjoyed the lust in her eyes. “Glad you showed up,” he said.

Heat flushed Bella’s face as she ripped her gaze from his broad chest and focused on his eyes. His smirk only embarrassed her more. He’d caught her ogling him like a horny teenager who’d never seen a hot man before.

She sucked her bottom lip into her mouth and bit, unsure of what to say. I never knew what a rockin’ bod you have just didn’t seem appropriate, so she went with, “Yeah,” as she fiddled with the laptop in her hands. “Mike said you’d be leaving soon. Thought I’d say goodbye.” She inwardly groaned at her lame response. At least she hadn’t told him to be careful.

REVIEW:

Jack Black has had a crush on Bella, the office secretary for a while now.  He was forbidden to date her by the boss.   Now Bella is in danger from the agency’s past and Jack has to protect her.  You will love all the intrigue and mystery in this story and  think the author did a wonderful job of weaving around all the characters in the book.  Great Read!

REVIEW: Avenging Kiss (Savage Security Book 2) by Karen Tjebben

Some sins cannot be forgiven. Those must be avenged.
When Aditya Chopra stumbled upon the decimated camp, she vowed to hunt down the men who killed her sister. The stench of burnt flesh and the taste of death in the air haunt her dreams and power her lust for vengeance. She will show no mercy.
The men of Savage Security served their country. They’d done their time in the sandbox and now enjoy their peaceful lives in the States, far from the death and mayhem of war. Will living in peace blind them to the dangerous threat that’s poised to strike?

Review:

This story actually has two romances in it.  One is a dark romance with Logan and Anditya and the other is HEA romance with Jack Black and Bella.  This story can be read as a standalone but some of the characters are also in Blood Kiss.  This is  story of revenge and love after a covert combat mission when the guys of Security Savage where in the military went bad.  Lots of mystery and will keep you guessing until the end!

Chapter Two

Georgianne stepped lightly down the stairs shortly after dusk, and entered the well-appointed parlour where everyone would assemble before dinner was announced.

With nervous hands, she smoothed the skirt of her lilac gown. Satisfied, she twitched the grey satin bow into place beneath her bosom. Why was she so anxious for the major to see her as a young lady and not as the little girl he last saw in her aunt and uncle’s house?

Her reflection in the mirror above the fireplace reassured her. The talented village dressmaker had made her stylish gown from a length of material found in the attic. The style flattered her shapely breasts.

She adjusted a knot of ribbon which ornamented one of her puff sleeves.

“Enchanting,” an unfamiliar male voice murmured.

Georgianne stared at a reflected face. He must be Stanton’s uncle.

“Did I startle you, Miss Whitley? If so, I apologise.”

How did he know her name? Of course, Sarah and Cousin Stanton probably told him she was their guest. She turned to make her curtsy to the old gentleman dressed in the height of fashion in a perfectly cut black coat, fawn waistcoat, and black pantaloons. He raised his quizzing glass to his eye and scrutinised her. Although he gave her no cause for alarm, she repressed a shudder when his gaze lingered on her bosom. “Please stand aside, my lord. It is improper for us to be alone.”

“Miss Whitley¬—” The earl spoke in a languid tone. His dark eyes regarded her, seeming to observe every detail of her appearance. “You are charming, quite charming. My sister mentioned you are the eldest daughter of my late, much lamented friend, Colonel Whitley.”

Should she believe him? She frowned. “My father never mentioned the friendship.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

I write historical fiction, so I am fortunate to be only a 20 minute train journey from London, which offers so many possibilities for research about times past. So many things spark my imagination. During the last two years I took an open tour bus ride around London. Amongst the sky scrapers and modern buildings Old London can be discovered, including the street which J.K.Rowling used as a model for Diagon Alley in her Harry Potter series.

For as long as I can remember, I enjoyed studying history, reading historical non-fiction, historical fiction and its sub-genres. I enjoy novels in which the characters’ behaviour is appropriate for the era in which they lived.

The more I read the more fascinated I become, and the more aware of the gulf between historical periods and my own. Our ancestors shared the same emotions as we do, but their attitudes and way of life were different to ours. One of the most striking examples is the position of women and children in society in bygone ages.

I don’t think it is possible for a novelist to be 100% accurate about life in former ages. However, the characters in my novels are of their time, not ones dressed in costume who behave like 21st century women. Of course, it is almost impossible to completely understand our ancestors, but through extensive research I ensure my characters observe the social etiquette of their lives and times.

My previously published novels, set in the early 18th century and in the ever popular Regency era, and my previously unpublished historical fiction will be published by Books We Love as e-book editions and paper books.

AboutTheAuthor

CD Bradley PIC

I’m just a girl who likes to daydream. Sometimes I write them down to share. Even as a little girl teachers would tell my parents I live in a world of my own. The literary world was my safe haven. Then we grow up. I practiced medicine in the ER and urgent care for the last 15 years. I started writing again while still working in the ER but put it aside when we opened our own clinic. Until last year my husband and I owned our own practice, we had two children and lived a somewhat normal life. Then in the span of a year we sold our practice, bought a 96 acre farm in the hills of West Virginia and adopted 3 of our patients ( ages 2,3,4) bringing our kid count up to five. It has been a crazy year full of ups and downs and learning to laugh at ourselves. Being mostly brought up in the city, managing a working farm with real farm creatures and ever lurking bears has been an adventure. Not to mention adjusting to being a mom of FIVE. But when things are rough I just laugh and tell stories. Because at the end of the day sometime laughter and love is all you have. Somewhere in the midst of kids and chickens, I managed to finish my first novel and dive deeply into the second. Writing at night or early in the morning while all the littles are asleep lets me escape into another world. I hope that you will enjoy the journey of the story as much as I have writing it. Pursue your dreams as if limits to your abilities do not exist.

BLURB

With a new wife and a new career as the co-owner of Phantom Force Tactical, retired U.S. Navy SEAL Blake Madison thinks he had it all. But when his wife disappears from their bed while he’s taking a morning jog, Blake has to figure out if it’s someone from her past as an investigative journalist—or his as a combat veteran and detective. Blake and his partner Nick “Colt” Colten assemble a team of the nation’s top warriors to take on the job of solving the crime. Will Phantom Force prove their worth and safe her life? Or will Blake lose both his private security company and the woman he loves to an unscrupulous rival bent on revenge?

excerpt

Excerpt

Blake Madison reached for the alarm at the first ding so it wouldn’t wake his wife.

“It’s Saturday,” Cait said sleepily, reaching for his arm. “Sleep in.”

“I’m going for a quick run.” He crawled out from under the covers, carefully moving their ninety-five-pound German shepherd, Max, off his legs. “It’s a lot of pressure having a young trophy wife. I have to stay in shape.”

She threw a pillow at him, but then reached over and ran her hand over his abs. “You’re doing a pretty good job. Feels like the body of a young Navy SEAL.”

He laughed. “Young? No. SEAL? Not anymore.” Then he leaned in close. “How do you know what the body of a young Navy SEAL feels like anyway?”

Her lips broke into a smile even though her eyes were closed. “Just guessing. Don’t worry, I prefer the old, retired model.”

“Good answer. I think.” Blake got up and fumbled around in the dim light to find a pair of sweatpants and a tee shirt. After getting dressed, he had almost reached the door when he heard a voice from beneath the covers.

“You forgot something.”

He came back and bent over Cait. “I know. But I was afraid I’d be tempted to crawl back into bed.”

“Good answer. I’m sure.” She reached up, grabbed a handful of his shirt, and pulled him down for a kiss, causing him to linger.

With his hands propped on each side of her pillow, he stared into her eyes. “Do you know how much I love you, Mrs. Madison?”

She grinned sleepily and pulled him close again. “Show me.”

He sighed. “I just did that a few hours ago. Remember?”

“Umm hmm.” She drew the words out with her eyes still closed and a contented smile on her face. “But that was last night.”

He glanced at the door, then back at the bed.

She must have sensed his hesitation. “I’m just kidding. We have all day. Go for your run.”

Blake lifted her hand off the covers and kissed it. “We’ve been married almost a year. We need to start acting like an old married couple, not newlyweds.”

Caitlin opened one eye momentarily. “Are you saying you want me to become a nag?”

“Only if you nag me about getting back into bed with you.”

He gave her another long kiss and then stood and stared down at her in the dim light. She was wearing his NAVY tee shirt—or as she called it, her favorite negligée—with the pearl necklace he’d given her the night before contrasting brightly against the dark blue. His gaze shifted to the wedding band on her hand and then drifted to her tousled hair spread out on the pillow, and her long lashes resting on her cheeks. He reconsidered his need for outdoor exercise.

“Bring me a cup of coffee when you get back,” she murmured, pulling the covers up and rolling over.

“I won’t be long, baby.” He headed toward the door and patted his leg for the dog to follow. “I’ll take Max so you don’t have to get up and let him out.”

“Love you.”

His heart flipped. “Love you more.”

Just as he started to close the door, she spoke again. “Don’t miss me too much.”

He grinned as the door clicked shut. She always said that when he left, even if they were only going to be separated for a few minutes. It had become a routine. Even the kids said it now when they left for school or went to visit a friend. Don’t miss me too much, Daddy.

Heading down the stairs, he turned off the security alarm and went out onto the porch, taking a deep breath of the cool morning air. After doing a few stretches, he sprinted down the gravel lane, his heart bursting with happiness and contentment. Until recently, Blake had been blind to the beauty of the scenes that surrounded him; now, he felt as if he were seeing the world through fresh eyes that noticed the gifts that had always been right in front of him.

He knew there was only one reason for that—and that reason was lying in the bed upstairs, waiting for him.

As he listened to the cadence of his feet hitting the dirt road and the sound of his steady breathing, his mind drifted to his upcoming wedding anniversary. He wanted to come up with something really special to celebrate—something that would show Cait how much she meant to him and the kids. It had been on his mind for weeks, but now the milestone moment loomed just days away, and he still didn’t know what that something was.

It had to be a gift that was special and personal, one unique enough to make Cait understand the depths of his affection. The pearl necklace he’d given her the night before as an “early present” had made her squeal with surprise and delight, but that was the kind of thing every husband got his wife.

Cait was different. Their circumstances were different. Although their marriage was a happy one, the months that had passed since they’d said their vows had not all been easy ones. Lots of changes had come about—some had tested their relationship, others had strengthened it. The fact that Cait had given up a successful journalism career to concentrate on becoming a wife to him and a mother to his children was a testament to her commitment. She had poured her heart and soul into making his life perfect. But he knew that choice had been a tougher adjustment than she let on.

Bypassing the security gate for vehicles he’d installed, Blake turned left at the end of their long driveway and continued on the dirt road toward the main thoroughfare. The gate seemed out of place in this peaceful country setting, but had become necessary after he and Cait had exposed a scandal at the U.S. State Department. They’d tried to keep a low profile and return to their private lives, but the press reports and social media campaigns from political fanatics made that impossible.

Blake glanced down at Max, who trotted contentedly beside him. The dog had been one security measure Cait had not argued about. In fact, it hadn’t taken Max long to move from protector to pet—Cait’s pet. Max followed her everywhere, including their bedroom. The longstanding house rule that dogs didn’t sleep on beds had been reluctantly withdrawn by the second week. Blake consoled himself with the knowledge that the connection between Cait and Max meant no one was going to get out of their house alive if the dog thought her life was in danger.

Passing the three-mile mark he knew by heart, Blake picked up his pace again. But just a few strides later, the image of Cait lying in bed pulled at him like a magnet, causing him to turn around before he’d made it to the main road. If the kids were still asleep, maybe he’d take a quick shower and re-join her.

Sprinting the last hundred yards, Blake was surprised when Max didn’t follow him up the porch but continued around the side of the house with his nose to the ground. The dog usually had a hearty appetite after a run and wanted to be fed immediately.

“Where you going, boy? Smell a raccoon or something?”

Blake let him go and entered the house to find his daughter, Whitney, walking slowly down the stairs, looking disheveled but wide awake.

So much for going back to bed.

“What are you doing up so early, young lady?”

He didn’t hear her answer as he continued into the kitchen, humming Oh What a Beautiful Morning from the show Oklahoma, then shook his head to rid it of the song.

Geez. If Colt heard me humming that, I’d never hear the end of it.

After turning on the coffee pot, he stood in the glow of the open refrigerator door, trying to figure out what he could scrounge up. Maybe he’d surprise Cait with breakfast in bed as another early anniversary gift.

Whitney shuffled into the room behind him in her big pink slippers and noisily pulled out a chair at the small kitchen table. “When is Cait coming back, Daddy?”

“What, honey?” Blake continued staring into the fridge. Having just turned four, Whitney talked a lot, but didn’t always make sense.

“When are those men bringing her back?”

Even before Blake could resolve in his mind what she’d said, his body responded as if he’d just heard the click of a trigger shattering the stillness of a dark night—and within the span of a heartbeat, the small twinge of alarm ignited into an urgent need to react. He closed the refrigerator door slowly, reminding himself to appear calm, even though the high-octane dose of adrenaline pulsing through his veins was making it difficult to breathe, let alone think. He turned to Whitney and knelt down beside her. “What men, honey? What are you talking about?”

“The mean ones.” Her eyes brimmed with tears.

Blake didn’t ask any more questions. He stood and turned in one movement.

Racing to the stairs, he took them two at a time and headed at a full sprint down the hallway to the master bedroom. He tried to enter the room quietly, but almost tore the door off its hinges in his urgency.

The bed was empty.

excerpt

“I don’t want to hear it.” She punctuated the words by stabbing a finger into his chest. “Damn you and the horse you rode in on, Ryder.” Hysteria stole the force from her words. Tears shimmered so it was like looking through a storm cloud. “I thought you were dead.”

He wrapped his hands around her hips and pulled her into his warmth, the tray clattering to the ground. She resisted, stood stiff with her palms braced against him, pushing away like an angry cat, her claws digging into his drool-worthy pecs. “I was dead without you,” he said, his tone as rough as a dried-up creek bed. The texture of his voice put her in the mood for hot sex on a cold winter night.

Kill me now.

The man knew how to push her buttons with his practiced moves and smooth words and a deep voice that zipped desire straight to her underpants. Lauren’s claws retracted and her body softened against his, even as her mind argued against forgiveness. “Love is an action word, Ryder. Your sweet words don’t buy you a pass.” Lauren shook her head to clear the emotional storm. “Not this time—”

“Yes.” Raw need swelled in his gravelly voice, the sound hitting below the belt. He was a walking fantasy and she was all too familiar with his ability to blow her mind, but her wounded pride demanded she grow a pair.

Lauren twisted to leave—honest to God, her mind was made up—but it was like her boots were nailed to the floor. She couldn’t step, slide, or scoot. Silence stretched. He waited, gave her time to get the hell out of Dodge.

The temperature in the hall flashed hot and his grip on her hips turned to fire. He lowered his head, inch by arrogant inch, until the day’s growth of beard on his strong jaw, his tortured moan, and the smell of leather were all that mattered.

Lauren burrowed past the damn leather jacket and fisted a hand on the side of his t-shirt. Her knuckles brushed the warm skin underneath. She held tight to the thin cotton to keep her hands from straying. The second he lowered his head she was lost. Her heartbeat filled the pause, thundering with need and fear and desire. His breath brushed her lips and her heart whispered a soft welcome home.

She also loves shutting down restaurants once a month with her girlfriends. Well, not literally shutting them down, like calling the health inspector or something. More like just staying until they turn the lights off.

book blurb

Lieutenant John Sullivan of the U.S. Navy SEALs is used to control in all things and especially when it comes to love. He has one rule.

DO. NOT. GO. THERE.

A recent mission gone wrong sees him seeking refuge at his cabin in the Adirondack wilderness, a place where he goes to deal with the things he has to do as part of his job.

Dr. Maggie O’Brien, Senior Trauma Surgeon at Hillview hospital, New York is dedicated to saving the lives of her patients, leaving her little time for anything resembling a personal life.

When it comes to love she has one belief.

NO. TIME. FOR. THAT.

A work related crisis sees her fleeing New York for the seclusion of the Adirondacks where her burnt-out body and weary soul crave solitude .

The last thing John Sullivan wants whilst he tries to deal with the emotional aftermath of his last mission is the distraction of a fiery red-head with curves that would tempt a saint.

The last thing Maggie O’Brien wants as she finally takes some time to examine her life is to deal with her body’s unwanted response to the bossy, over-bearing man who rescued her in the woods and who drives her crazy in every way.

Soon, though, each realizes the other may not be what they want but what they need.

However, ghosts from the past and shocking events from the present shake John to his core and lead him to make a fateful decision that may just cause him to lose the woman he loves, forever.

excerpt

The cabin was illuminated by a number of lamps and the fire was crackling to life in the hearth. Maggie came around by the side of the fireplace when she stopped dead in her tracks. Over beside the bed, his back thankfully to her, stood her rescuer, totally naked. Maggie clamped her hand over her mouth to stifle the gasp that was rapidly making its way up her throat. She had seen thousands of bodies in her time but never one quite like the one before her now.

Christ, thought Maggie, even this guy’s muscles have muscles.

She knew she should retreat in to the bathroom to give him enough time to get dressed but she stood transfixed. The breadth of his shoulders and the way his muscles flexed as he reached down to the bed for his shirt held her spellbound. The perfect form of his back as it tapered flawlessly down to his hips and the tightness of his ass, followed by the incredibly toned muscles in his legs all combined to immobilize Maggie into a state of almost euphoric appreciation.

She had never seen a man quite like this before and she couldn’t help but gape. However, as she looked closer, she began to notice scars and the more she looked the more she realized the embodiment of male perfection before her was covered in them. Some seemed a few years old but her medical knowledge told her some were quite recent. Worryingly, she noticed a few were gunshot wounds.

Oh God, she groaned to herself, who is this guy?

He threw the shirt over his head and she started to back up towards the bathroom when he turned around.

“No need to leave because of me,” he grinned at her.

Maggie blushed the color of her hair.

“I….I….I’m sorry,” she stuttered as she tried to look anywhere except between his legs.

“It’s ok, I’m not the shy type,” he chuckled as he pulled on a pair of boxer shorts and slung a pair of jeans across his hips. He left the shirt hanging loose and it was then Maggie realized, as she looked into his laughing brown eyes, just how incredibly handsome he was, like Henry Cavill and Eric Bana all rolled into one. She didn’t think it was possible but she blushed even more.

interview

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I was always a storyteller and as I grew up I realised I could marry my ability with the English language to all the stories roaming around my head and get them down on paper. At about ten years of age I was producing little homemade “books” and at fourteen I even “launched” a local magazine! I didn’t think of writing as a viable career until my mid-twenties when I became a journalist but that didn’t provide enough of an outlet for my imagination, so I eventually decided to focus on writing books.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

My earliest memory is of reading Robin Hood. I remember the description of him being dressed in “lincoln green” and wondering what sort of green that was! I was most troubled by this. I’d say I was about seven at the time. The book was a present from Santa Claus and it was my first book with no pictures. I can’t tell you how disgusted I was at Santa for bringing me a book with no pictures!

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Traditionally I love crime fiction and I always thought that would be what I would write so no-one is more surprised than me that I have written nothing to do with crime fiction! In recent years I have been reading a lot of romance and romantic suspense – which I really enjoy. I also love the classics – anything by Jane Austen, The Bronte sisters, Thomas Hardy etc. I adore beautifully written books so will often have a look at the writers listed for big international literary prizes and check out the books. This is how I came to read Atonement by Ian McEwan, one of my favourite books. I also love reading collections of poetry – Yeats, Kavanagh, Seamus Heaney.

What is your favourite book?

Book? Do I have to pick just one? Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams. The Hunger Games trilogy and The Twilight series. Some recent favourites are Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan and Consolation & Conviction by Corinne Michaels.

You know I think we all have a favourite author. Who is your favourite author and why?

I love Ian McEwan for the richness of his prose and imagery. Kaylea Cross for her tight plots, thorough research and great sex scenes. Suzanne Collins for her brutal and unflinching subject matter. Thomas Hardy for his beautiful imagery, George R.R. Martin for his incredible world-building and Stieg Larsson for Lisbeth Salander. Mia Sheridan, Corinne Michaels, Kristen Ashley and E.S. Carter for their wonderful characters, great storylines and depth of character.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I’d go back to London 1938 and tell, the then British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain just how Adolf Hitler and Nazism were going to pan out and that he needs to abandon appeasement and take action.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Finding the time to write and being able to get into the right headspace is difficult – never the writing itself.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Oh Yes! I’m a dog nut! I adore my dogs! I’m still grieving over the loss of Miss Billie – a lab collie cross and a huge character – loved by all who met her. She died just before Christmas. I still miss my old girl Zara, an amazing German Shepherd who was in my life for over ten years.

What is your “to die for”, favorite food/foods to eat?

Oh this is easy! Fresh Atlantic lobster plucked from the pristine waters of the west of Ireland, served with lemon or garlic butter. New potatoes freshly dug from my dad’s garden and his sweet carrots and my mother’s scones and apple pies are unbeatable.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Not to be all “famous sport’s brand” about this but just do it! I’d also say don’t waste your precious time with traditional / legacy publishers. Indie publishing is the way to go – if you are a success then the legacy publishers will come looking for you and that’s the way to have them.

fun facts

Q&A with Cristina Slough

Getting to Know Cristina

Five Fun Facts

  1. I love writing to music, it sets by mood and puts me in the zone.
  2. When I was little, I believed one day I would really fly just like Supergirl!
  3. I have jumped out of a plane, by choice!
  4. I know the words off by heart to over 20 movies, but I can never remember song lyrics!
  5. I love the water but I can’t swim.

Top Three Writing Essentials

  1. Google is essential, so I must have internet (I’m a writer not a serial killer!)
  2. Music (I cannot write without it.)
  3. A notebook and pen (I have to write down ideas immediately.)

Best Piece of Advice for Aspiring Writers

If you are going to invest hours, weeks and months writing a book, make sure that you are deeply connected to it. Don’t write about zombies and vampires just because that is where the market is right now, if you really want to write a World War love story. Writing is a very personal art. If you don’t believe in your own story, how can you expect others to?

If your aim is to be a published author, don’t expect an easy ride. Even famous authors have had rejections, just remember that failure only exists if you quit!

interview

About TILL DEATH US DO PART

Q: That ending….Many Readers didn’t see it ending as it did. How much of that ending was you and how much was you letting the characters take the wheel?

A: That ending was all them. I didn’t even know what was going to happen until my fingers typed the final words. Suddenly, my mind raced right back to the opening chapter of the book where Mimi was dreaming about Joel; his body, bloody and wet. All of the feelings and emotions I had throughout the story came together in the final scene. The best way to describe it would be—putting a needle and thread throughout the book and stitching it all together. Truly, it felt like I was right there with them. The ending resulted in showing readers what I saw…even I was shocked!

Q: Favorite Scene of TILL DEATH US DO PART?

There were quite a few scenes that I loved writing. If I had to make a firm choice then it would have to be Chapter 30 titled: Joel. This is where my emotional investment to the story hit its highest level. It is the moment that my voice was no longer my own. It was all theirs.

Q: Team Joel or Team Austin?

Ultimately, Team Austin. But I loved writing about Joel, he was very complex, there was far more about him than meets the eye.

Q: Who is your celebrity dream cast for TILL DEATH?

Scott Eastwood would make the perfect Austin. I’d love to see Zac Efron play Joel, although he would have to be more rough around the edges.

Looks wise, Shay Mitchell would fit Mimi perfectly but I have no idea if she could pull off a British accent!

I think that Julianne Hough would also fit the physical profile of Meg, but again, she’d have to be able to pull off being a Brit.

Q: If you can pick one song that encompasses the whole story, what would that song be?

I won’t give up by Jason Mraz. I wrote the end scene to this song. It could have been from either Joel or Austin’s POV.

Q: Do you have plans to write more with the characters from TILL DEATH?

No. I truly feel like my journey with the characters has ended. That being said, they will forever be a part of me.

Q: What is in the works now?

I am working on a new standalone novel about a woman that fakes her own death to escape from her abusive husband. Some of my research is being carried out by working with a lady who has been a victim of domestic violence. She has offered to share her experiences with me. It is not based on her life, however she is helping me to understand what some women may be feeling that are or have been in an abusive relationship. This one is going to be emotional for sure.

meet the author

Novelist, movie addict, and animal lover, Cristina Slough is the author of:

Till Death Us Do Part, her debut novel.

Cristina has always been a bookworm, rarely seen without a pen and paper in her hand, she loves delving into a literacy fictional world of her own.

At the age of 11, her junior school teacher told her mother that she would be wasting her life if she didn’t become an author. Throughout her teenage years and beyond, her parents spurred her on to keep writing. She later began a career in commercial real estate, working in London’s West End, a corporate bubble where she was unable to fuel her passion to write.

It was on her Californian honeymoon in 2012 that the bug to write was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. After visiting Yosemite National Park she was inspired by the natural beauty of the land that surrounded her. Holding a special place in her heart, Yosemite would later be written into her debut novel.

She finally gave up the ‘big smoke’ when her son, Lucas, was born in October 2013.

When Lucas was a newborn, Cristina was told to sleep when the baby sleeps. She never could. There was a calling inside her to write. After getting to grips with her new role as a mother, she began working a psychological thriller, but she couldn’t fully connect to the characters she created. She ditched the manuscript and started Till Death Us Do Part(Limitless Publishing, 2015).

Cristina is married to Adam, who runs a successful business; together they share their Bedfordshire home with their son, crazy white German Shepherd and three spoiled cats. They can be found trekking through woodlands, or around the many shops Cristina loves to explore. As a family, they love to travel frequently, the United States being a firm favourite.

Temporary Assignment 5 Cover

Synopsis

Cole Bryant is a highly decorated Captain in the Marine Corps. His whole military career has been embedded deep inside a Special Ops organization. But that life is over. He is re-assigned to a recruiting office in Washington. It was at his request, in order to be closer to his sick mother, but pushing paperwork and selling the dream is far from the heart pumping, heat of battle he is used to.

Savannah Rogers is a high achieving high school principle that doesn’t have time for a relationship—even if she wanted one.

When Cole and Savannah cross paths, both their worldviews are called into question. Can Cole trade in his high profile, risk-seeking life of service, for a simpler life? And will Savannah be able to let her guard down long enough to see that there are men with merit left in the world? Or, will the ravages of war destroy everything?

 “A Physical Reminder”

Derek

The cottage is dark when I arrive at 6 a.m. Elaine is the only one with an early wake-up call, so it’s possible I can get into Melissa’s room before they’re up and stirring. Driving all night might not have been the most restful approach, but with the energy surging through my chest, I knew I wouldn’t get any sleep anyway. I’ll nap a few hours this morning and be ready to go without losing a day.

Dropping my duffel by the stainless fridge inside, I ease off my boots and place them one at a time by the door doing my best to keep quiet. Grabbing a water bottle, I head to Melissa’s bedroom, but I nearly slam it against the skull of a half-dressed Patrick. He’s right around the corner, holding a wooden baseball bat high, like he’s about to use my head for the winning homer in the World Series.

SHIT!” we both whisper-shout.

“What the fuck?” Patrick lowers the bat and breathes.

I recognize the energy surging through his muscles. It matches the rapid tweaking of my own, and I need a second to recover.

“You could’ve shot me a text,” he groans, dropping onto the couch. “Did you fucking drive all night?”

“Couldn’t sleep.” I clap his shoulder as I pass. “Glad to see you’re on your toes. You’re officially off guard duty.”

“Hey!” I pause, and he tosses me the bat. “Happy to help. I’m going back to bed.”

Catching his “weapon,” my brow lines. “Think you’ll be able to sleep?”

“Nope.” That grin spreads across his face. It’s the same one that used to tick me off because I knew it meant I’d be cleaning up his shit sooner rather than later.

“Just keep it down. I don’t need to hear you getting any.”

He points back at me as he heads down the hall. “Right back atcha.”

Shaking my head, I turn Melissa’s bedroom door handle as softly as possible. Unlike my younger partner, I don’t plan to wake her this early. I know the pregnancy makes her tired, and I’ll be content to be beside her. It’ll be the first good rest I’ve had in four days, knowing she’s with me and safe.

She’s curled in her familiar sleeping position, and I can’t help a smile as the warmth of love fills me. I will never get tired of watching this woman sleep.

Jeans off, I whip the thin, navy sweater I’m wearing over my head and slip into her king-sized bed. She doesn’t even stir, and I’m happy she feels so secure with Patrick in the house. He might have been a pain in my ass in the past, but he’s more than made up for it with this assignment.

Easing closer to her, I lift her long, dark waves off the pillow and replace them with my head. She makes a soft noise and stirs, but she doesn’t wake. My arm goes above her, and our bodies are so close, I can feel the warmth radiating from her ivory skin.

Wrapping a dark curl around my finger, the tension slowly drains from my body. Being with her is enough. She’s home and comfort and warmth and all the good things I thought I’d never have again. She’s my future and my desire and my love, and the notion that some dickwad might try to hurt this woman, might threaten what I cherish…

She sighs and scoots closer to me, still asleep. The idea that she knows I’m here is incredibly satisfying. My own eyes are heavy, and I lower my head.

In three breaths, I’m out.

The heart has a mission of its own…

Wounded in more ways than one, Navy SEAL Jax Taylor only understands short-term commitments. And when he walks into the Trident Bar in Virginia Beach, beautiful bartender Peri Halstead sizes him up right away. But that doesn’t stop her from teasing him with her sultry sarcasm, or taking him home—after she finds him passed out cold in the parking lot…

Soon enough, Jax is recovering at Peri’s in return for doing some handyman work, and the sexy sparks are flying—in almost every room in the house. Peri tells herself she deserves some fun, especially now that she’s a single mom with a cheating ex to deal with. But when it’s time for her and Jax to go their separate ways, the miles between them—and the danger that’s about to touch both their lives—has them wondering if Jax can learn to love more than the mission…

excerpt

Jax climbed from the rental car. Stiff from the transatlantic trip, he limped a few steps but righted his gait before opening the heavy oak door. In his bar experiences, such an entrance usually led to a man cave.

Inside, darkness enveloped him, matching his mood. Pain meds and exhaustion made him irritable. He was still pissed about not being allowed to rejoin his team, and doubly so because TJ had a training op circumventing their party. So much for buddy reunions.

Behind the bar, a tall, lean beauty glanced up from the beer taps. The gnawing ache in his leg disappeared under scrutiny of wide, sea green eyes. Long, wavy hair

surrounded her shoulders like a lion’s mane. His fingers itched to tangle in the strands.

Other more intimate visions flitted through his mind.

Months without a woman made him a sick bastard. Probably in stark contrast to the public’s standard perception of a SEAL, but they didn’t know or understand a Special Operator’s life. What they did for love of country and their brothers in arms. For him, the best antidote after a gruesome mission was down-and-gritty sex.

Before he readjusted his sour expression, she stepped in front of him.

Her lovely gaze branded him with I got your number, sailor.

****

Peri Halstead approached her newest patron as he saddled up on a bar chair.

His steely-eyed glint hinted at danger. Most of the Trident’s patrons did. “Wow, I’ve only seen one other man stride into this place with a more pissed-off expression than yours.”

“Your ex?” Mr. Dark Blues matched her sarcasm.

She liked him already. The small scar on his chin kept him from appearing too

pretty. “Insightful. Let me guess…vodka tonic.”

He narrowed his gaze.

“Martini?” She smiled and tossed her hair over her shoulder. “You’re too GQ for

domestic beer. Heineken?”

He tightened his jaw.

She must have struck a nerve with the pretty boy comment. “Whiskey on the rocks?”

Raising a brow, he lifted his chin.

Such swagger. She slid a cocktail napkin on the bar in front of him. “You gotta be a Jack man.”

He grinned, revealing near perfect teeth.

Delighted at winning their little game, she winked and stepped away to fetch his

drink. Usually, she went for the rugged variety of handsome, but his straight nose with

slightly elevated bridge was sexy as hell. She poured him a double shot over ice and

returned, planting it in front of him.

“My buddy, TJ, said y’all have the biggest and best cheeseburgers.”

“You’re Jax?”

“Damn, a psychic bartender? Guessed my brand and my name.” He winked.

Eyes as dark blue as a stormy ocean. Lord, she needed to keep her distance with this one. “Wish I was. I’d have more money in the bank. Actually, I’ve seen the picture he carries of you guys partying after BUD/S graduation. TJ talks about you often. Are you here for training?”

“Currently in a holding pattern.” With a roll of his shoulders, he scowled and

thumped his glass down.

Not linebacker thick, he was more like a running back—built for speed. “They call

you GQ.” A Texan not rugged enough to be branded Cowboy and too handsome for Tex.

He sipped his drink, then cleared his throat. “Did TJ share my birthday, too?”

“No. Just a story about you chasing some bad guys through the streets of a South American country in your birthday suit.” Peri grinned.

“Touché.” He held up his glass and shotgunned the remainder of his whiskey.

Usually immune to her bar patrons, she was blindsided with a lust she’d lidded since her daughter was born. “Where’s TJ? Shouldn’t your buddy be showing you the hot spots?”

“Jumping out of a C-130.” He fiddled with his napkin.

“So, you just returned stateside today?”

He checked his expensive, matte-black, multi-function watch that would have

marked him special-ops without their previous conversation. “About two hours ago.”

“Long mission?”

“Months.” He glanced around the bar, then to her.

“It’s early. You still have time to remedy your just-back virgin status.” She smirked.

His gaze burned into her like a blue flame. “Is that an offer?”
