GENRE: Romantic suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Amid a sweltering Miami summer, a serial killer is haunting the city. Reporter Ingrid Sorenson is assigned the story and her primary source is brusque detective Rick Gonzalez. The pair clash, but sparks of passion ignite. They risk their jobs to give in to their desire, but mistrust of each other’s career motives wedges them apart. Then Ingrid gets a tip that leads her into the killer’s lair. She and Rick must choose between saving themselves or rescuing their love.
Excerpt:
The sky darkened again as if a dimmer switch had been thrown. Rick flicked on the headlights. “I don’t think we’re going to beat the rain,” he said. “Do you want to turn back?”
Worry crossed her face. “No way. I’ve got a deadline to meet,” she said. “I’m not afraid of getting wet.”
He gave her an assessing glance as they pulled up to a stop light. She was plucky, he had to give her that. And smart. The light changed and he turned his attention to the road. He had to keep his guard up. She was a reporter, first and foremost. He had to remember that.
“Have you found witnesses who might’ve seen a suspect?” she asked.
“I can’t discuss specifics of the investigation. The killer chose his times and locations very carefully, which suggests a lot of pre-meditation. These weren’t spontaneous homicides. He went to different areas known for prostitution pickups each time because johns would be scared to go to the place where one had just been murdered and the hookers would be on the alert, but they were all in this general North Miami area. He staked out lonely streets to direct the customer to drive to commit the sexual act and likely had his vehicle parked nearby to make a fast escape.”
Ingrid was avidly taking notes. He paused to wait for her to catch up, and wondered if he was saying too much. As long as he focused on details about the killer that someone would recognize, he couldn’t get in trouble.
By the time he pulled up to the scene of the third killing a mile away, fat plops of rain were sporadically splattering the windshield. They soon increased to a steady drumbeat battering the roof.
“Crap,” Ingrid said.
“There’s not much to see, honestly, just another side street.”
“I still think I should see the actual spot,” Ingrid said.
He would have to end up with a super-thorough reporter. “I have an umbrella here somewhere,” he muttered, foraging under the seat.
Holding the umbrella, he jogged to the passenger side and opened the door. Necessarily brushing shoulders to fit side-by-side under the small shelter, they walked down the street to an alcove of an abandoned building.
“Victim three was found parked outside this doorway, Saul Martinez,” Rick said.
The sky cracked as if it were splitting apart, unleashing a torrent of water.
“I love these midsummer thunderstorms in Miami, don’t you?” Ingrid said.
Lightning illuminated her face with a bright halo.  Her cheeks shone where the rain had caught them, her forehead framed with tendrils of damp hair. Drops glistened on her eyelashes like tiny tears. He felt himself gliding toward her.
She blinked and the raindrops fell from her lashes. He halted himself.
“You’re getting wet. Let’s head to victim four,” he said brusquely. He turned toward the car without waiting for an answer.
The crime scene was a side street ten blocks west. This time they didn’t get out of the car. Rick pulled up and reconstructed the scene, restraining his urge to lean over her, just to breathe in her slightly sweet powdery scent, as he pointed from the window.
By the time they pulled back into the station parking lot, the rain had tapered to a dancing sprinkle and fingers of sunlight poked through the clouds, sending an eerie, hazy wash over the atmosphere.
He parked. Ingrid handed him her business card. “If you think of anything else, call me. My cell’s on there, too.”
Rick tucked it in a pocket. “So, what are you going to write?”
“What you told me, plus I’ll call some serial-killer psychology experts.”
“Just don’t get me in trouble again.”
Ingrid gave him a hard look. He’d meant it as a joke, but it hadn’t come out lightheartedly. She’d taken it as a rebuke. Damn.
“Thanks very much for your time, Detective.” Her tone was frosty. “If I have any other questions, I’ll call Major Montoya.”
The slam of the door buffeted the vehicle.
Interview with Christina Elliott
Where do you get your book ideas?
I was a newspaper reporter for many years so that’s definitely been a source for my fiction writing. That’s why Ingrid in In the Heat of the Tropics is a reporter! Among many other topics, I covered crime, cops, courts so I know that arena, although I still have to do research to get grounded in the details. However, but my background certainly gave me a good headstart. I’m definitely interested in the dark side of human nature, but I also love a good romance so romantic suspense seems to be a good combination for me.
Do you write outline to start or just start writing?
I try and outline as much as I can because I know from experience that if I just start writing, I tend to veer into a corner and get stuck there. I end up wasting a lot of time and writing energy. So it’s really helpful to know where I’m going. Even with an outline, I still find myself veering off track! It’s good to be flexible but also know where you want the story to end up.
How long does it normally take to write the book before edits?
Too long! It can take a couple years. Romance novels have the distinct advantage of being shorter so they take less time than say a detective or literary novel. I wish I could speed up my process, but other pesky little things get in the way, like writing so I can eat! Plus, I always like to leave a manuscript sit for a bit then come back to it with a fresh eye to see what needs fixing. I generally write too much, often jettisoning at least a book’s worth of writing to get to the story I want to tell. I hope to find another way someday!
Are you an indie author or mainstream author?
I’m a mainstream author. I’m published by a small press called Melange Books, which has various imprints including romance, YA and mystery/thriller. I like having a publisher behind me. They have a great cover artist and are very picky about copy editing, which is good, as typos and spelling/grammar mistakes really take away a book’s credibility, though they slip in.
How did you get started, can you give people wanting to write an idea how to get started?
I started writing as a child. That’s all I ever wanted to be so I wrote stories as a kid, then in high school and so on. If you take up writing later in life, I suggest taking courses to get going. Start with short stories before tackling a novel. Novels are unbelievably complex and unwieldy beasts so short stories are a good launching pad. There are also tons of online literary reviews you can submit to and thus build up a nice portfolio, as well as your confidence.
POWER STRUGGLE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Suspense/Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
 One hit man who’s back for revenge.
One detective who’s not going down without a fight.
It’s been ten months since Detective Madison Knight almost died at the hands of Russian Mafia hit man Constantine Romanov. She hasn’t seen hide nor hair of him since he escaped police custody and fled to Russia soon after his arrest, except now her latest murder investigation gives her reason to believe he’s back in town. Seeing as the victim is the man who killed her grandfather, her perspective may be a little skewed, but with the MO smacking of Constantine and the victim’s connections to the mob, she finds it hard to be objective. Still, she’s doing her best to consider all the evidence.
When she receives a threatening letter from Constantine, however, her suspicions are confirmed. And he’s made it abundantly clear that not only does he plan to finish what he started but he has her family and loved ones in the crosshairs, too. Madison vows to do whatever it takes to save them, but as the hours race by, the body count rises. And the stakes only get higher when Madison’s sister, Chelsea, goes missing.
Now, Madison’s only play is to take Chelsea’s disappearance for what it really means: Constantine is calling Madison out for one final showdown. And they won’t both survive…
Excerpt:
Yasmine was set up in interrogation room one. There was something about questioning a potential murder suspect in this formal setting that gave law enforcement the edge. Even an innocent person could find themselves unravelling under the pressure, and the mind is good at playing games. It can make one feel guilty when they’re not, and that’s why it was crucial to ask the right questions and be able to read people accurately.
Madison and Terry were about to go in. She had one hand on the doorknob and she was carrying a water bottle for Yasmine in the other when Sergeant Winston called out to her.
“Knight, wait!” Winston sounded winded, and when she turned around, his face was red and his brow was sweaty, and he was panting. “Is it too much to ask for you to come to me? No, I have to go chasing you around the station. What is the update on the Deer Glen homicide?”
“There’s not a lot to say yet.” Madison slid a sideways glance to Terry.
Winston glanced at Terry, too, then back at Madison. He drew a pointed finger between them. “I saw that look. What aren’t you telling me?”
“The victim was Jimmy Bates,” Madison said nonchalantly.
Winston screwed up his brow. “Why does that name sound familiar?”
“He’s the man who served twenty-five years for killing my grandfather.” There, she’d delivered the facts with cool detachment.
Winston’s eyes snapped into alignment with Madison’s. “You should probably be taken off the case.”
“No.” She stood firm, peacocking her stance. “There’s no reason for that.”
He squared his shoulders. “Last I knew, I was the one to call the shots, Detective.”
“Listen, there’s no reason to take me off this case. I didn’t even know my grandfather.”
“He was still your grandfather,” the sarge said. “That makes this case personal.”
She wanted to counter with the fact that her grandfather had died nine years before she was born, but the defense fell flat even in her head. Instead, she locked her jaw and tilted up her chin. It was probably best that she remain quiet, but the sergeant seemed to be expecting her to say something.
“The man served his time,” she said.
Winston turned to Terry. “What are your thoughts on the matter?”
“If Madison says she has things under control, then she does.”
“But she didn’t say she has things under control.” Winston studied Madison. “Do you?”
She flashed him a cocky grin. “I like to think so.”
“I’m sure you do,” Winston stated sourly and pointed to the closed door. “Who’s in there? A suspect?”
“It’s Yasmine Stone, a woman who Bates was sleeping with,” Madison began. “She’s the one who found his body.”
Winston nodded. “Does she look good for the murder?”
Madison’s heart pounded. The similarities between Lillian Norton’s and Jimmy Bates’s murders crashed together in her mind. Her legs began to buckle thinking about Constantine being back in town, but she managed to muster her strength without warranting the men’s attention. “It’s too early to say.”
REVIEW:
Madison Knight’s nemesis Constantine is back in this story.  He almost killed her previously and the Mafia hit man is back for revenge.  Now he is threatening Madison’s family.  Can she protect her sister Chelsea and her sister’s family, her parents, and Troy her boyfriend? Madison is having commitment issues with Troy and now they are being threatened.  I love the character Madison Knight, she is a great detective and I think this series would make a great TV show.  I received this book as an arc for a honest review.
BLURB:
Shannon Nolan thought she’d escaped a nightmare world of ruthless crime – until her son is kidnapped! With nowhere else to run and no one else to trust, she puts her life in the hands of her boss, firefighter Daniel Jennings.
Excerpt:
“You need to call the cops,” Daniel said flatly.
“I can’t.”
“They took your son,” he said, incredulous.
“I know!” She bit her lip against another outburst.
“What aren’t you saying?”
“He called,” she said. “When I got here. When I walked into the backyard, he called and said…”She could barely get the words out. “He said he’d send Aiden back to me in pieces if I involved the police.”
“Oh, Shannon.” He rubbed her shoulder.
The immense sympathy in those two words overwhelmed her. She didn’t know if she should lean into him or run away. “Thank you for helping her and fixing everything.”
“I followed you to help you,” he said, a lick of impatience in his voice. “You need to report this.”
“If I do and they hurt my baby, it will be my fault. I can’t live with that.”
“What’s really going on?”
“I don’t know much more than you do.” She didn’t realize she was crying again, or that Daniel had her wrapped in his arms until the fabric under her cheek was damp.
“Will you trust me?” Daniel asked when she quieted.
It seemed she already did.
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Karli Redding is a traveling nurse. She has a month off between jobs, so when Mill Pond’s mailman, Keagan Monroe, calls to say that her grandfather can’t care for himself anymore, Karli volunteers to go to Mill Pond and help set up suitable health care for him. Axel’s always been a pain in the rear, and age hasn’t improved him. The two bump heads, and Karli ends up cooking and cleaning for the old man while she tries to decide what to do with him. She also finds herself getting more and more attracted to Mill Pond’s mailman. But Keagan’s been through one bad romance and he wants something permanent this time, nothing temporary. Can Karli give up her footloose lifestyle? Can she find happiness in a small town?

(Exclusive Excerpt):

 Keagan turned into the long drive that led to his parents’ house—a big, white four square with a porch swing hanging on the narrow front porch.  Karli couldn’t help comparing it to Axel’s.  His porch was long and wide with columns that marched across its front and turned a corner to meet the side of the house.  She loved it.

A little farther down the drive, a ranch house sat back on a deep, front lawn.  “My sister and her husband’s house,” Keagan said.

He drove past a freshly painted, red barn to a long, narrow shed that must have held yard equipment at one time.  He unlocked its door, flipped on the bright overhead lights, and led her inside.  It felt good to get out of the chilly night air.  In November, when the sun dipped, so did the temperatures.

The studio’s walls and ceiling were painted white.  The wooden floor was painted green.  Long, butcher block counters lined all three walls with pine shelves mounted above them.  A sturdy oak table occupied the center of the room with a pottery wheel at each end.  A kiln took up one corner of the room.  But what caught her attention was the beautiful products drying on every available surface.

She couldn’t help it.  She walked to the shelves holding the displays to study them, drawn by Keagan’s beautiful work.  She studied the new lines for every season.  Each was so special, she didn’t know which she’d choose if she was going to order a set.  Winter took her breath away.

“They’re all gorgeous,” she told Keagan.

He came to stand next to her.  “You must love snow.”

“I love the seasons, but these just make me happy.”  One entire plate was embossed with snowmen, sleds, and mittens, then glazed a glossy red.  Another had a white center and was surrounded by vivid red poinsettias.   A third was rimmed with pine trees with cardinals perched on their branches.  Her favorite might have been the plate rimmed with fruit pies and steaming mugs of coffee to warm the cold winter days.

She noticed plates and bowls drying on drop cloths in the back corner.  She gave a seductive smile and bent over, pretending to study those.  Her neckline plunged.  Her jeans were tight.  His expression said that he’d noticed.  And then there was a quick knock on the door, and Brad strode inside.

He smiled at her.  “Keagan said you were coming to see his work tonight.  Thought I’d stop in, too.”

Were the heavens mocking her?  Why did he show up when Keagan had actually noticed her?

GENRE: Romantic Comedy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Is Christmas really the most wonderful time of the year? New Yorkers Robyn Lane and Sidney Bellows aren’t so sure. Robyn has always dated struggling creative types. For once, her parents would love her to bring someone with health insurance and a 401(k) to their Chrismukkah celebration. Her actor boyfriend doesn’t qualify. While across town, Sidney’s professional life already belongs to her parents. She’s an attorney at her father’s law firm and she works tirelessly to keep her love life private. If she brings her lawyer boyfriend to their annual Christmas extravaganza, her parents will have the wedding planned by New Year’s Eve.
A mutual friend playfully suggests they trade boyfriends for the holidays. The women share a laugh, but after copious amounts of wine, decide The Boyfriend Swap could be the perfect solution. This way, Robyn can show off her stable attorney boyfriend and Sidney’s high-society family will take no interest in her flaky actor beau.
It’s a brilliant plan—in theory. In practice—not so much. When Will turns out to be the boy-next-door Robyn crushed on hard throughout her teenage years, and Sidney’s family fawns all over Perry like he’s an Oscar-winner rather than a D-list wannabe, one thing is certain: The Boyfriend Swap might just change their lives forever.
Excerpt:
“Give the idea a minute to percolate,” Sidney said calmly. Her mouth remained in a straight line, indicating she wasn’t joking.
My stomach quivered with unease, but I took calming breaths to settle down. According to Anne Marie, Sidney was very opinionated and sometimes wouldn’t shut up until she got her way. I’d just let her keep at it until her throat hurt or she passed out from too much wine.
Sidney continued, “If left to our own devices, the holidays are going to blow chunks, but if we pool together, we’ll all be better off. And it’s only for a few days. It’s the perfect solution to our mutual problem.”
I stood from the table and removed a bottle of water from the refrigerator. I poured a glass and placed it in front of her. Hopefully she’d take the hint. The wine was clearly going to her head.
“What do you say?” she asked the minute I sat back down.
The girl had to be on more than fermented grape juice. Hallucinogenics maybe? Whatever influence she was under, she clearly believed her ludicrous plan had merit and I was going to have to put my foot down. “I say that I’m a grown woman and shouldn’t need to lie to my parents about who I’m dating.”
Sidney nodded. “I agree. You shouldn’t.”
A breeze of relief zipped through my core. “Glad we’re on the same page.”
“You shouldn’t have to lie, but in our case, we sort of do. If we want to make it to the New Year without requiring a straitjacket, that is.” She smiled, a slick grin I was certain both assured her clients and put the fear of the devil in her adversaries in equal measure.
REVIEW:
Sidney, a lawyer, is dreading taking her lawyer boyfriend Will home for Christmas.  Her dad, head of her law firm, will work her lawyer boyfriend or make him feel inferior.  Robyn’s family don’t like her actor boyfriend Perry, they think he’s a flake and won’t ever settle down.   Sidney comes up with a plan for her and Robyn to swap boyfriends for Christmas.  Only maybe their families really know what type of partner they should be with.  Both their families absolutely love the fake boyfriends, who are total opposites of their real boyfriends. Do opposites attract.  Great original story line, lots of fun and laughs.
Day is no problem, but as tensions rise at night, nothing can protect them from giving in to unbridled passion . . .
Excerpt:
“Your father is missing.”
Devyn Cole tightened her grip on her cell phone and tried to make sense of what Sheridan March had just told her, as fear swept through her. Maybe she hadn’t heard right.
“What do you mean, missing?”
“The Coast Guard found the Princess Devyn drifting five miles off shore early this morning,” the Arrowhead Bay Chief of Police explained. “But there’s no sign of him anywhere. And no clue to anything in the house. We went through every inch of it. The alarm was fried, probably needs to be replaced, but otherwise the place was clean as a whistle.”
Devyn clutched the phone. “Was there anything on the boat? Something he might have had with him that could give us a clue?”
“Nada.”
“Where’s the boat now. Would the Coast Guard hold onto it?”
“In its slip at the Bayside Marina. After the Guard went over every inch of it they had one of the men on the cutter bring it back in and berth it. I have the keys.”
Devyn swallowed to ease the tightness in her throat. “When was the last time anyone saw him?”
I love managing Red Light Lingerie, a sexy boutique in Dallas. I get to spend my days talking to people about bedroom wear, sex toys, and enhancement lotions for all occasions. But by far, my favorite erotic job perk is my sexy British boss, Maxwell Penn.
Max is a Matthew McConaughey look-alike who’s equal parts dreamboat and domineering pain in the neck, and I regularly fluctuate between “I want to bed him” and “I want to strangle him.” But still, yum.
The paradigm of our relationship, however, changes irrevocably when a lingerie designer, a friend of Max’s from Britain, comes to town, and I have to stand in for a no-show lingerie model. Before I can say G-string, I find myself sandwiched between Max and his dark-n-sexy friend.
I’d be in total heaven if it weren’t for the guilt swirling in Max’s blue eyes. I have no idea why it’s there, but I’m bound and determined to find out.
Publisher’s Note: This book contains descriptions of consensual activities, including eroticism and discipline. If you object to these elements, please do not read this book.
Excerpt:
Max strolled in like he owned the place, which was appropriate, considering he did own the place. But did he have to do it looking sexier than any man should be allowed to be?
I clutched my hand over my heart. “Max, you scared the living shit outta me! I thought a maniac had stuck around after hours.”
“My apologies, Ms. Jennings,” he said.
Bree. Bree. Bree. I wished he’d stop with the formalities and go back to calling me Bree, the way he used to before our relationship had gone sideways.
“It’s okay,” I said, readjusting the strap of my travel bag. “My mind was…elsewhere.”
Max nodded, looking me up and down with the Texas-sky-blue eyes that fueled my fantasies, and my heart kicked up a few more beats per minute. That time, however, my reaction had nothing to do with fear.
Why’d he have to be so damned sexy?
Tanned, muscular, and topping six foot, he was a walking wet dream, and the stimulating hum between my legs, the one that had been driving me crazy all night, morphed into a high-powered tingle. I doubted even my trusty Rabbit could ease the ache.
GENRE:   Contemporary Romance
BLURB:  Unemployed Keira Callahan decides to try her luck at the casino before delving back into job hunting. As she walks through the casino, she bumps into the most handsome man she’s ever seen. When he asks her to dinner, she doesn’t hesitate. As she learns Cade Tyndale’s story—he needs to wed or lose his British estate, her impulsive nature rears up and she agrees to marry him and move to England for one year. What does she have to lose except her heart to the impossibly handsome Earl of Barrett?
Excerpt:
“Forget it, Elizabeth. I don’t see how I can pull it off,” Cade Tyndale, the fourteenth Earl of Barrett, said to his twenty-three-year-old sister. It saddened him to see the frown on her pretty oval face. “Besides, eligible young women don’t pop up out of thin air these days. I fear the worst, that Edward will indeed inherit the estate even though I’ll keep the title, Earl of Barrett. What’s a title without the estate? I won’t be in charge of making any decisions about how the income is spent. Those decisions will fall to Edward. We must resign ourselves to it.”
Elizabeth shook her head vigorously, her blond hair flying out around her head. “Cade, don’t say that. We’ll figure something out,” she said, turning and staring out the window of their ancestral home.
“It’s not fair. Why does it have to be like this?”
Cade walked to her and wrapped his arm around her shoulders, giving her a gentle squeeze. “I know, but that’s what the will states. There’s no contesting it. If I could have changed the terms, you know I would have done it.”
She turned into him and buried her face in his chest, soft sobs escaped her throat.
He stroked her hair while holding her tight. “Please don’t cry. It won’t be so bad.”
“Perhaps a ball,” Elizabeth said.
“A ball?”
“Yes, of course. Young women love balls, and you’ll be able to find a suitable wife.”
Cade gently grasped her small hands within his. “Stop.”
“What?”
“Please stop. There will be no ball. I cannot find a wife like that. There is no fairytale ending here.”
“But Cade…”
Cade shook his head. “I’m sorry, Elizabeth, but there’s nothing more I can do.”
Tears welled again in Elizabeth’s blue eyes before spilling down her cheeks. “Won’t you keep trying?”
He tried to pull her in closer for a hug, but she ran out of the library. Cade watched her leave, then turned to gaze out the window. He was out of options to make things better for her and for the future of the estate. There was no way he’d find a bride in less than a week. It was hopeless, and Edward would inherit the estate.
Behind him, he heard footsteps and turned to see his valet enter. “Will there be anything else, sir?”
Cade shook his head. “No, Clifton. Let’s go. There’s nothing more I can do here. Besides, I’m looking forward to enjoying myself in Las Vegas for a few days.”
“Very good, sir. The car is waiting.”
REVIEW:
Keira meets Cade in Las Vegas while she in there visiting her sister.   She is having a lucky night on the town and is Cade’s good luck charm also.  When she hears he is about to lose his home and  England estate as he has to be married in next couple of days she offers to be the bride he needs for a year and day.  It doesn’t hurt he is easy on the eyes, an earl, rich, and a good person.  I loved the story line but it did seem to take them a while to get it together.   Now Elizabeth, Cade’s sister, needs to find a man too!
R. A. Steffan
Author info: http://www.rasteffan.com
Author bio: R. A. Steffan began writing for pleasure in 2005. After honing her skills for a few years in amateur circles, she eventually transitioned into freelance nonfiction writing and ghostwriting professionally published short fiction. In 2015, she made the jump to publishing full-length novels and series.
Much to her surprise, her Horse Mistress series won a 2016 Rainbow Award, and was nominated for the 2017 Lambda Literary Awards. She has written titles in the paranormal romance, fantasy romance, sci-fi romance, and historical action/adventure genres.
When not writing, the author enjoys reading, horseback riding, walking her dogs, and raising a small backyard flock of ducks.
Book Title: Antidote: Love and War, Book 1
Paranormal romance or sci fi romance: SFR
They’re fighting the same battle. They just don’t know it yet.
Skye Chantrell has just escaped a war zone.
She’s carrying the stolen antidote to a deadly bioweapon.
When her damaged shuttle crashes on a remote lunar outpost, she’s captured by the leader of a rogue group of barbaric aliens. Now her people’s survival—not to mention her own—rests in the hands of the Seven Systems’ most feared and hated criminal.
A man with the face of a brutal thug, and the eyes of an angel.
* * *
Hunter Tarthasian has every reason to hate the Regime.
He and his comrades have gone rogue, vowing to use every means at their disposal to bring down the evil Premiere. Now, they’re hunted and on the run, holed up in an abandoned outpost while they plan their next move. The last thing Hunter needs is a female human civvy with a terrible secret crash-landing on his doorstep. Especially when she starts to awaken feelings in him which have no place in his life as a wanted fugitive.
Feelings that could very easily get all of them killed.
* * *
From award-winning author R. A. Steffan comes a sizzling new sci-fi romance series, perfect for fans of J. R. Ward and Sherrilyn Kenyon.
Strap in tight, because all’s fair in LOVE AND WAR.
Excerpt:
If I die now, everyone back home dies with me.I can’t die now.
“Oh, gods, I can’t die now.” The words were barely audible over the shriek of a space vessel pushed to its limit and beyond.
Skye Chantrell was not normally a religious woman, but there was something about the sight of a planet’s surface rushing far too quickly toward the cracked viewport of her stolen, rusted-out shuttle that brought the old superstitions flooding back.
Please, please, please, she prayed. Not now, not here, not like this!
When she’d fled the Regime’s complex at the border of the demilitarized zone, she’d barely managed to escape with her life. If the shuttle she’d taken hadn’t already been damaged and leaking fuel when she entered the wormhole gate at the edge of the system, her pursuers would have tracked her down and finished the job in no time at all. As it was, the craft’s malfunctioning engines had flung her randomly through the vortex before spitting her out here, in the gravitational well of an old, abandoned outpost on some unremarked, forgotten moon.
With no other options available, she ran through the emergency restart procedure one last time. Her breath locked in her throat as the aging thrusters coughed, sputtered, and fired weakly into life. She was thrown forward, hard, against her seat restraints as the engines tried to slow the descent, but she could tell it wasn’t… going… to be… enough…
Her father had entrusted her with the most important data file in the Seven Systems, at the cost of his own life. She hadn’t even had a chance to mourn him yet, and now she was going to join him.
She had failed, and that failure meant a death toll on a scale she could barely imagine. Her hands slid from the controls and fell to her sides.
“I’m so sorry, Daddy,” she whispered, as the ground raced up to meet her.
* * *
The alarm blared through the old lunar outpost, shrill and jarring. Hunter jerked his head up from the holographic star map he and Kade had been examining, meeting the other Vithii male’s cold gray eyes with a frown.
“Perimeter breach,” Kade said unnecessarily. The two of them moved toward the door as one, jogging side-by-side through a warren of dingy gray corridors toward the control room.
Hunter already had his comm unit out as they ran, and was barking into it. “Draven! What have we got?”
“Ilarian shuttle,” came the static-riddled reply. “Looks like Regime registration, but it’s outdated. They don’t use these codes anymore. It’s coming in hot—crash-landing trajectory. Engines are inactive.”
“Where?” Hunter snapped.
“About half a klick north of us,” Draven reported. “Just west of the big crater.”
They were nearly to the control room. “Right,” Hunter said. “Kade and I will be with you in a moment. Stand by.”
Kade’s voice was grim. “This could be bad.”
“Or it could be nothing,” Hunter countered. “It all depends on who else—if anyone—is following along behind our unlucky shuttle pilot.”
The only reply was a skeptical grunt.
Hunter slid to a stop in front of the heavy durasteel door and slapped his palm to the reader. The slab of metal screeched open on ancient tracks, exposing the simple control center beyond. Draven was alone, his massive, hard-muscled frame bent over the sensor interface. He glanced up as they entered, gold eyes glittering beneath his head of spiky copper-colored hair, then looked right back down again, intent on the screen before him.
“Kill that klaxon,” Hunter said. “I think we’ve all got the point by now. Is the shuttle down yet?”
Draven fumbled for the override without looking, and the shrieking alarm cut off. “Looks like the pilot managed to get the thrusters firing on emergency power. It’s veering southeast, closer to us.”
There was a low rumble, vibrating the deck plates under their boots. “That was it. It’s down,” Draven reported.
The door screeched open again, admitting Ryder and Pax. Pax immediately crossed to join Draven at the controls; his metallic facial implants glinting in the blue light of the readouts.Ryder—a strongly built Vithii woman with a head full of spiky red hair—turned to Kade and Hunter instead. “What the fuck was that?” she asked. “Meteor strike?”
Kade snorted. “Yeah, right. We should be so lucky.”
Hunter—who preferred to leave most of the sarcasm to Kade, who had a flair for it—filled Ryder in quickly on what they knew.
She frowned. “I don’t much like the idea that someone could have just randomly crashed on our doorstep. There’s no sign of other vessels approaching?”
“Not so far,” Draven said. “Looks like your standard engine malfunction. Which is not to say that no one was after them. I don’t know about you, but when I see a rusted out piece of junk with bad ID codes, I think stolen.”
Kade raised a dark, sardonic brow. “Maybe they came to the right place after all, in that case. Assuming they’re not charred meat now, of course.”
Hunter brought his focus back to the matter at hand. “Life signs?”
“Weak,” Draven reported. “Human. Just one, looks like.”
Hunter’s brow furrowed. What was a human doing with a possibly stolen Regime shuttle, way out here in the badlands?
R. A. Steffan Interview
  1. Where do you get your book ideas?  Anywhere and everywhere. I daydream about stuff that becomes the basis of a future book all the time. Often, I will think of a particularly dramatic scene, or even a line or two of dialogue. Then, the rest of the book grows organically around it as I figure out what might have happened to lead up to the point, and what the consequences of that scene will be. Getting new ideas has never been a problem for me.
  2. Do you write an outline to start or just start writing?  I outline. I used to just do a synopsis of a few hundred words before diving in, but frankly, outlining works better. Fewer loose threads and inconsistencies to tidy up afterward.
  3. How long does it normally take to write the book before edits? During the golden age of my “day job” unemployment last year, I wrote one 50-70,000-word novel per month. My current series has long books, and these days, it’s taking me at least three months to get a 100,000-word draft done.
  4. Are you an indie author or mainstream author?I’m indie. I like actually getting paid a respectable amount of money for my writing. That said, if I wasn’t willing to be a marketer and businesswoman on top of being a writer, I’d be just as poor as if I was trad-pubbed. It’s not for everyone.
  5. How did you get started, can you give people wanting to write an idea how to get started? I come from a fan fiction background. From there, I became a ghostwriter, then a content writer (non-fiction), and finally, a fiction writer under my own name.
As far as how to get started:
1) Write. You must have a product to market, or you’ll never get anywhere.
2) Write things that people want to read. I sort of cobbled together a genre that doesn’t actually exist for the first two book series I wrote, and set myself up for an uphill battle to market the books. I made it work, sort of, but I would strongly recommend against it.
3) Commission an amazing cover that looks exactly like all the other covers in your genre, but, y’know, better. Be prepared to pay a fair amount of money for this. (If you’re not sure what your genre is, see #2.)
4) Get your manuscript professionally edited.
5) Grow a mailing list of people interested in your work by writing something related to your books that you give away in exchange for an email address. Prequel novellas work well for me. I have them professionally recorded as audiobooks and stream them free on my websites, as well as offering them as an e-book download.
6) Stay abreast of the latest trends in the industry so you can become an early adopter. That’s the true beauty of indie publishing, as opposed to trad-pub.
7) Always keep your rights unless selling them is a financial no-brainer. Be wary of exclusivity agreements. (Looking at you, Kindle Unlimited…)
8) Expect to work your butt off for a few years before becoming an “overnight success.” Expect the people in your life to have no clue that being an author requires more than sipping margaritas on the beach and tapping out a few hundred words here and there as the mood strikes.
That’s okay, though, because the feeling when someone you’ve never met draws fan art of one of your characters and posts it on Twitter is not the kind of thing that can be bought with money. There are more rewards to writing than the purely financial.
GENRE: Contemporary Romance (spicy)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

When a hermit and a scientist are snowbound in a cabin in the woods, the sparks they generate just might melt it all down in this scorching and sensual romance.

Scientist Bethany Morgan discovers the schematics to a world-changing recycling system that will help her realize her greatest dream: providing clean water to the world. The only problem? She must track down the creator, a Dr. Anderson, to help her complete the prototype, and he’s been missing for decades.

James Anderson has clung to the quiet, pain-free existence he’s made in the mountains since his father’s death years ago. But when the determined scientist he rescued gets snowed in at his cabin for an undetermined time, his world is turned upside down…

Excerpt:

Not a rabbit.

James stood beneath his most lucrative snare, hands on his hips.

It appeared that … he tilted his head and narrowed his eyes just to make sure. Yep. Unless he was mistaken, instead of catching a small woodland creature, his snare had trapped a human.

James watched as long, silky hair swayed back and forth in midair. A slender neck led to a narrow back that tapered into an even narrower waist.

A real, flesh-and-blood woman.

GENRE:   Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
 Elizabeth Woods and Ian Sweeten had a romance which sparked over a few months. Marriage followed, and with it the couple traveled around the world as he served in the military. After Ian’s deployment, overseas, their young love deepened into something more but with life comes complications, and what Elizabeth comes to realize is that her husband is battling his own demons. Mind games, deceit and abuse become part of the ways Ian seeks to control her. As she struggles to repair her marriage and get back to the love they shared early in their relationship, Elizabeth realizes that holding on to the man she loves may come at a price too high to pay.
Excerpt:
 “How are you feeling today?” Dr. Carter asked.
“Antsy,” I told her. I’d brought a bottle of water and took a sip. It helped my throat at least. “I was thinking about what I wanted to say to you on my way here, and it just occurred to me there are some parts of my relationship with Ian that are just as painful as when they happened back then. What happened to the old adage about time healing all wounds? I should be past all this by now.”
Dr. Carter shook her head. “We all heal differently. But in my experience, time heals little if anything. It all depends on how much work you get done in the meantime. And that’s what you’re here for, so you’re moving in the right direction.”
“You tell everyone that?”
She cracked a smile.  Dr. Carter struck me as a motherly woman. She was in her early forties, by my guess. “I do find myself saying it often,” Dr. Carter admitted. “A lot of people struggle with this idea that they should be further ahead in their emotional healing than they actually are. We give people the idea there’s this prescribed amount of time to be over mourning, and after that amount of time it’s somehow wrong to feel anything about it.”
“Mourning?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said. “You’re mourning the demise of your marriage.”
I thought for a moment before answering. “I never looked at it that way.”
INTERVIEW
Where do you get your book idea? My book idea was based off of my actual feelings of grieving through the divorce of my marriage of 10 years. I took my own emotions and memories and turn them into a fictional book.
Did you write an outline to start or just start writing? Yes I did create an outline, I also wrote the most important things that I wanted to be in the book that were true and then the rest was just filler stuff from my imagination.
How long did it take you to write the book before edits? The book took me about six months to write before I submitted it to an edit agency.
Anything additional you want to share with the readers? Writing has always been a passion of mine. I love seeing words form on paper and when reading watching them come to life. Words can be so powerful and inspiring. I hope when people read my book that passion and fire come to life for them as well. While writing this book I wanted others to know they are not alone and that everyone has a war within them they are battling. It took a lot of strength to write this novel and so far the feedback from my readers has been amazing. Thank you everyone who has been there for this new and exciting journey and for anyone who has taken the time to read this inspiring story of love and grief.
How long did it take you to write the book before edits? The book took me about six months to write before I submitted it to an edit agency.
Anything additional you want to share with the readers? Writing has always been a passion of mine. I love seeing words form on paper and when reading watching them come to life. Words can be so powerful and inspiring. I hope when people read my book that passion and fire come to life for them as well. While writing this book I wanted others to know they are not alone and that everyone has a war within them they are battling. It took a lot of strength to write this novel and so far the feedback from my readers has been amazing. Thank you everyone who has been there for this new and exciting journey and for anyone who has taken the time to read this inspiring story of love and grief.
Amanda Slade has a major crush on her sexy art professor and wants his help with an important extracurricular activity: Project VirgEnd.
Professor Jem Nichols knows falling for his beautiful student is a bad idea but he just can’t say goodbye as the semester ends. But the professor refuses to hastily take her virtue. Instead, he wants to slowly teach her the most important lessons of lovemaking. As she experiences first-time pleasures and passions, love blooms.
By the time they’re done, he’ll know every inch of her body. But as her deadline for deflowerment looms, will the professor be the one to take Amanda all the way? This is a sweet yet steamy love story.
Excerpt:
Amanda’s First Experience with an Art Model
By A.C. Rose ©2017
I was in the front row of the class in my usual seat, when a gorgeous, robed man walked into the art classroom, stood on a small platform, untied the sash to his robe and let it fall on the floor. He was naked.
Turning to take an innocent glance at the model, I nearly gasped out loud when I found myself eyeball to eyeball with his penis. He seemed so unashamed, so unaffected, as he stood there gazing out at all who studied his naked form.
I looked at my friend Tara and she looked at me. It was the tenth week of the semester in our Basic Art course, but we had no clue what was going on until the professor stepped in front of the room.
“Today we’ll be working with a live nude model so we can learn to translate the human form to paper,” he announced. “We’ll be working with charcoal, so remember, we’re looking for the essence of the human body—the shape, not details.”
With that, Professor Jem Nichols passed around the box of charcoal crayons and handed out huge sheets of drawing paper. As he got closer to me, a rush of warmth flowed through my body and ended in a nervous tingle in my stomach.
Maybe it was wishful thinking, but when he reached my desk to distribute the supplies, I could swear his hand lingered an extra moment near mine as I claimed my two pieces of charcoal from the box. And that he looked at me a certain way.
When he moved on to the next student, I breathed a sigh of relief, only because I worried my physical reactions to his presence would reveal I had a crush—a big one—on my teacher.
BLURB:
“He’s back.”
Words Macy Donovan hoped to never hear.
Trace Cartwright was the maverick rodeo cowboy who broke her heart, leaving her on the steps of the church on the eve of their wedding. Now he’s returned to build his home and to lay claim to her heart … again. Macy barely survived the broken heart the first time. Does he think he can walk back into her life and take up where he left off?
Excerpt:
Well, she was a take charge kinda gal now wasn’t she? The girl Trace Cartwright had left behind would have shrunk away into a dark corner to lick her wounds. But that’s not who she was anymore. Her eyes flew to the rearview mirror. Then her brain took over, and she spun the truck into a U-turn at the end of Main Street…good ting the sheriff was looking the other way. The element of surprise was on her side, and she would use it.
GENRE: Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

All that glitters in Miami is not gold . . .

Lured in by a bad ex-boyfriend and the moonlight of Miami, Meg O’Hara is trapped in a nightmare situation, waiting tables for a crime boss and fearing for her life. When undercover FBI agent Christopher Shaunessy offers her a way out, she seizes it. Getting the goods on Salazar Moreno might not be easy, but she’ll do anything to be freed from her servitude and Moreno’s sexual advances, even if it means moving in with the charismatic agent.

Chris Shaunessy pretends to be Meg’s lover in order to keep her safe, but he steels his heart against further involvement. Passion has no place in the sordid world of organized crime. And yet, the closer they get to cracking the case, the stronger his feelings for the spirited waitress shine. It’s a dangerous game he’s playing, and taking Meg in his arms for real could prove a fatal misstep . . .

Excerpt:

“Does that man never have a day off?” Margaret Kathleen O’Hara grumbled, grabbing her tote bag and sarong to move surreptitiously along the chairs by the pool. If the hotel manager saw her here again she’d be toast. He’d more than toss her out. Threats to call the police had been thrown at her for months now. Although in her case, that might be a better deal.

With her eyes trained on his location and the Miami sun beating down on her exposed skin, Meg backed along the water’s edge attempting to leave the area before he spotted her. She needed to shower the chlorine out of her tangled hair and change for work soon. He looked in her direction and she rushed behind the closest object. It was six-foot-plus of blond-haired gorgeousness. The man’s eyes were glued to something on the upper deck.

Her boss was sitting there with one of his expensive bimbos. Did Blondie like that type? Maybe he wouldn’t notice her little game of Hide and Seek. She leaned around him, ducking back when she saw the Pool Nazi still present. Getting caught was not an option. She already owed more than she could ever repay.

“Are you okay?” Forest green eyes stared down at her, puzzled. Would he buy that she was simply looking for shade? He was big enough to provide it. With strong hands, he reached for her shoulders and Meg reflexively batted them away. She got enough of people groping her at work. Scorching curses froze before erupting from her mouth as the hotel manager moved, staring in their direction. Her mind kicked into overdrive, scrambling for a way to hide in plain sight.

“Sorry,” she squeaked. Grabbing the man’s head, she planted her mouth solidly on his. Short, thick strands of hair tickled her fingers. Firm lips yielded no resistance to the increased pressure of her mouth. Better make this look good.

An electric current skittered over her skin causing her heart to race. Maybe too good? Slowly he pulled her closer with his muscular arms. Her eyes flew open and she broke the connection. His hair-covered chest was too close for comfort. And much too tempting. Distance, she needed distance. Her eyes darted around, seeing no signs of the manager. A sigh escaped. Time to make her exit as well.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Kari Lemor was one of those children who read with a flashlight under the covers. Once she discovered her mom’s stash of romance novels, there was no other genre to even consider. For years, she had stories stewing in her mind, stories of love and happily ever after. But writing wasn’t something she ever liked in school. Of course, no one ever asked her to write a story about a couple falling in love. Now that her children are grown, she can concentrate on penning tales of dashing heroes who ride to the rescue and feisty heroines who have already saved themselves.
