You first met Chad Rogers and Chloe Atwood in Florida Heat, now you get to read their story.
Old family ties broken, childhood pain healed and true love revealed—one step at a time.
One phone call sends Chad Rogers back to the one place he’s been avoiding—home. Being at his mother’s side after she is shot, he faces the younger brother who tormented him during childhood and his ex-lover, Chloe Atwood.
Chloe Atwood is engaged to a family friend. Chad Rogers steps back into her world, spinning it off its axis. She sees him in a new light this time around, leaving her to question if they can have a future together.
“Ryan called. They got the guy. Your friend ID’d him.” Angel winked, and his eyebrows drew together, wondering what she was talking about. “What’s her name? Chloe? You two have a story to tell.”
“So, what’s the story?” She nudged his shoulder.
“We’re college friends. They’ve arrested the guy?” A little too excited about the news, his voice spiked. He turned quickly, checking to make sure he didn’t wake their mother.
“You’re not getting off easy, baby brother. We’ll go back to the conversation about Chloe. They arrested him, she made the ID, and now he’s been officially charged with attempted murder. But Ryan doesn’t think it’ll stick. He thinks he’ll end up with second degree assault. Either way, he’ll serve time. Plus, he has other charges surrounding the incident. Ryan couldn’t talk about it though.” She leaned close. “Now, tell me what the real story is with you and Chloe.”
“There’s no story. She’s engaged.” He pretended to be browsing email messages.
“But you have feelings for her?” Angel pushed down the top of his laptop. “Talk to me, Chad.”
“Two years ago she came to Florida. For two weeks our friendship became more. She returned home here, and for a short time things were going well. We talked on the phone, texted and sometimes video called each other. When she wanted me to visit, I made every excuse possible to avoid coming back here.”
“You know why.” With a stern expression, he said, “Don’t push me.”
“Okay, keep going. So you didn’t visit her. Or your family. What happened?”
“All conversation slowly came to an end. Maggie told me Chloe was seeing another guy.” He closed the laptop. Nothing would get done with his sister around, asking questions. Questions he didn’t want to answer. “I’ve tried dating, but it’s tough.”
“How have you tried? Have you dated anyone else?” Angel remained against his arm.
“I went on a couple of dates with girls the guys on the ranch would set me up with. But they just weren’t…what I was looking for.”
“Because they weren’t Chloe. Right?”
The questions were darts being thrown, hitting the bull’s-eye. He hung his head. “Yes.”
