Dead In A Dumpster by B. L. Blair (Giveaway)

Dead in a Dumpster 360x540 (Website)
Mystery / Romance
Date Published:September 23, 2014

“I found the body on December 1st.  It was a horrible way to end an already terrible day.”

When Leah Norwood finds the body of Isabel Meeks in the dumpster behind her store, she never imagined the police would consider her a suspect. Sure, she didn’t liked Isabel, but then again, neither did anyone else. Isabel had a condescending attitude and a bad reputation. As manager of the antique store, Patina, she had made a lot of enemies.

There is Patina’s assistant manager, the handsome and charming Trent. Isabel was blackmailing him. There is Patina’s owner, the aloof and influential Anthony Thorpe.  Isabel was smuggling drugs through his store. And there is the entire drug dealing Cantono family. Isabel had lost a box containing heroin from one of their shipments. That is just to name a few and didn’t even include the stranger who was seen arguing with Isabel just hours before her death.

The police have too many suspects and too many soft alibis. Leah needs to prove to the sexy new chief of police that she had nothing to do with Isabel’s death.

Leah loves a good mystery. Can she find the killer before the police charge her with murder?

 EXCERPT

“Leah.”

I turned around and saw Griggs standing near one of the displays toward the back of the store.  He gave me a lazy smile.  My heartbeat sped up a little.  Olivia was right as usual.  I was attracted to him.  I didn’t really know what, if anything, I would do about that.  Alexander Griggs was very different from the men I usually dated, and I seriously doubted he was interested in me.  Griggs seemed like the type of man who dated blonde, willowy, sophisticated women.  In other words, not me.

“Are you ready to leave?” he asked me.

I nodded, rose from the chair, and headed toward him.  I moved the attraction issue to the back of my mind.  Once the police solved Isabel’s murder, I would seldom see Griggs anymore so there was no point in trying to decide a course of action.  He was staring at one of the displays with a slight smile on his face.  I followed his gaze trying to determine what had captured his attention.  Was there something wrong?  Had I missed something?

“What is it?” I asked when I reached him.

He turned and looked at me.  He nodded toward the display.  The look on his face made me light-headed.  His mouth curled into a sensual smile, the indentation growing deeper.  “At least now I know why you smell like strawberries.”

I tore my gaze from him and looked at the display.  It was the fragrance that Olivia had created for me, Leah’s Strawberry Essence.  I tried not to blush but felt my face heat up.  He laughed softly.

“Come on.  I’ll drive you home.  There is nothing more we can do here.  Ross and Bottoms have finished dusting for prints.  We have to wait to see if there is a match before we can proceed.”

The other officers were waiting outside, and once we left the building, Bottoms started boarding up the door.  Griggs led me back to his SUV.  We waited in the car until they had finished securing the store.  The officer with Bottoms, whom I assumed was Ross, came over to the car.

Griggs headed back to my apartment.  We didn’t talk on the way.  I was suddenly exhausted.  I hadn’t slept well the last two nights, and it was now close to midnight.  I really wasn’t much of a night owl and found it difficult to keep my eyes open.  I was now very glad that Griggs was driving.

He pulled up in front of the complex.  I opened my door and step out onto the sidewalk.  I was surprised when Griggs turned off the car and opened his door as well.  “You don’t have to get out.”

“I need to check your place,” he told me.

“What?  Why?” I asked.

“Because someone broke into your store looking for something in those boxes.  We both know it was the heroin.  They didn’t find it.  Or at least not all of it.  If it was someone who is familiar with your habits, then they may come looking here.”

“Oh,” I said in a small voice.  Of course, the drug dealers would want their drugs back.  I suddenly wished I had my gun.

“I have asked Reddish to tell the press that we have found the heroin.  But it may take a few hours for that to get out.  So I am going to check your apartment to make sure that no one is in there, and Cisneros and Albright are on guard duty.”

He pointed to the police car parked near my stairwell.  I hadn’t noticed it when we pulled up.  I looked at Griggs.  His face was serious and determined.  If he thought I was going to argue, he was crazy.  Besides, I was too tired to argue anyway.

“Thanks,” I said and led him up the stairs.  Griggs had me wait outside while he checked the apartment.  When he said it was all clear, I went in.  I stood in the doorway.  It looked just like I had left it.

“Make sure you lock the door, and if you hear anything out of the ordinary, call 911,” Griggs said as he walked over to me.  “By tomorrow, everyone should know that we have the drugs, and no one should be after you.  Call me if you have any questions.”

“I will,” I told him.  “Thanks again.”

When he didn’t say anything, I looked up.  He was watching me.  His bright green eyes held me in place as they swept across my face.

“I like strawberries,” he said softly.  He leaned forward just a touch, and I thought for a moment that he was going to kiss me.  My heart started to pound, and my palms began to sweat.  My breath caught in my throat, and I swayed toward him, just a little, but he quickly moved past me out the door.

“Don’t leave town,” he ordered as he headed down the stairs.

 REVIEW:

This is the start to a new mystery series featuring Leah Norwood.  After reading this book I can totally see how Leah can get into some adventures.  Leah discovers a body in the alley behind her store one night after work.  It is Isabel, the manager of the store next door, that Leah had words with earlier in the day.  Leah decides she must solve the murder since she is a suspect and she does’t want Griggs, the new police chief, to think she is guilty.  Leah goes around questioning and following people trying to solve the murder.  Then there is another murder and guess who finds the body?  Can Leah solve the case before she becomes the next target?  And who will be her new boyfriend?Griggs, the police chief, or Marcus, the drug smugglers son? I really enjoyed the mystery and light romance in the story.

B. L. Blair writes simple and sweet romance and mystery/romance stories.  Like most authors, she has been writing most of her life and has dozens of books started.  She just needs the time to finish them.

She is the author of the Holton Romance Series and the Leah Norwood Mysteries.  She enjoys reading books, writing books, and traveling wherever and as often as time and money allows.  She is currently working on her latest book set in Texas, where she lives with her family.

EXCERPT
“You don’t think that all of the disasters that humanity has faced were all natural, do you? The bubonic plague is a good example. It was blamed on a number of things. Rats, the Jewish people, punishment from God. It all led to a cleansing of anything unusual. Mostly supernaturals, who were trying to blend in, and in that process the humans wiped out many of their best defenders against the demon population, which then went on to spread the plague across the world. But that is just one example.”
“What was the point though, wouldn’t the demons have wanted people to be alive so they could possess them?” Liam asked.
Erik gave a ruthful smile. “Yes and no. The bubonic plague wasn’t so much about killing people off, as it was infecting them. Making them weak and easier to possess. The plague compromised their immune systems, allowing them to be taken over. Especially the young.”
Something about what Erik said sent a twang through my brain. I struggled to put the pieces together that floated just out of reach. Damn it. Liam touched my arm. “What?”
I closed my eyes and pressed my palms into them, blocking out any light. “Just let me think for a minute.”
The feel of the night air and the sound of the fountain filled my ears as I looked at the pieces one by one.
Demons escaped in London who bred fast.
Minor supernaturals were being possessed by lesser demons and evil spirits.
Packs of Orion’s demons were free to cause chaos.
The only thing we were missing was a plague and then Orion would have access to all the young people he wanted. The urge to vomit swelled up through my stomach and burned the back of my throat.
“Children are normally hard to possess, aren’t they?” That was why it had taken a full pentagram when the black coven was trying to have India possessed so many months ago. At least, that was what I understood.
Bert bobbed his head. “Yes, it can be very difficult to possess a child. There is a natural protection over the young when it comes to demons, something the elementals put into play.” He grimaced as he said ‘elemental’ and again I wondered at these particular supernaturals that I’d only just been hearing about. “But when the small humans are ill, that protection goes into keeping them alive, rather than keeping them from being possessed.”
Feeling like a bully, but not really caring, I leaned in to Bert. “How did the bubonic plague really start?”
An interesting thing happened. Bert paled and shook his head. “I can’t tell you.”
My eyebrows shot up and I glanced at Erik. “You want to make him talk, or do you want me to make him talk?”
Erik shrugged. “Either way is fine. I haven’t interrogated a demon in years. I’ve missed it.”
Bert paled even more and his lower lip trembled. “I can’t tell you. I can’t. Tracker, Slayer both of you have to trust me. Please.”
“Begging will get you nowhere, little demon.” Erik growled. He had a short, serrated knife in his hand that he’d pulled from somewhere within his robes. It was curved, like a skinning knife, and if it hadn’t been for the rough edges that’s what I would have called it.
“Track demons and evil spirits.” Bert blurted out as he fell to his knees. “Proof I am on your side. Track them; you’ll see it isn’t me fooling you.”
Erik paused and looked over at me. “Up to you. Personally, I’d just as soon dice him up.”
“Fuck, why not, Tracking will take me two seconds.” I grumbled.
I send out a thread to Track demons as a whole, paired with a thread for evil spirits, just to satisfy—
Holy. Fucking. Hell.
I swayed on my feet and went to one knee, the overwhelming wash of pings I got back seriously making me re-think getting out of bed the day before.
We were surrounded by Orion’s minions.
Hundreds of them.

ANNA WELLS – RELENTLESS TOUR (REVIEW & GIVEAWAY)

Contemporary/Erotic Romantic Suspense
Date Published: March 25, 2014
The last thing Michaela Prentice expected was to end up in bed next to her friend Jordan Marsh after a wee bit too much champagne.  The sex was incredible but she doesn’t want their one night to ruin their friendship.
The last thing Jordan Marsh wants is to remain friends with Michaela.  They’d crossed the line from friends to lovers and that was where he was going to stay, after all he’d been relentlessly plotting her seduction for months.
Now Michaela has woken up to a slight hangover, a relationship with a guy she thought she knew, a mother planning a wedding, and a brother and a best friend who think it’s important to run a background check on your new man. What could be more normal?
Just as Michaela is beginnings to adjust to the status of their new relationship things start exploding; literally.
Warning: This book is funny, steamy and contains sex scenes with chocolate that some readers might find delicious.

My Review:

This book was an incredible read. I actually read it in one setting as I couldn’t put it down.  The characters are well written and the sex scenes are steamy.  Michaela is an accountant who apparently never reads the business section or she would know who her best guy friend for a year is.  Her family knew and thought she did  too (hilarious scene by the way).  Jordan finally puts the moves on her after a year of being best friends but it takes Michaela a little while to catch up.  Oh and did I mention somewhere is trying to kill her?  This is a 5***** read and hope to read more on the Billionaire Brothers.

 Enjoy An Excerpt:

Jordan’s eyes opened at the sound of the crash. The first thing he saw was the box of condoms on the nightstand; the second thing he saw was the expiry date on the box of condoms. They had expired last year. He smiled at the thought that Michaela had obviously not been entertaining very many guests, if any, since she had broken up with Noah. Then it occurred to him that expired condoms could possibly be a mood killer. He wouldn’t mind a baby on the way, but Michaela might want to wait awhile before they went down that particular road together. He doubted he was going to be able to talk Michaela into any morning fun if he imparted that news to her so maybe he would wait awhile before mentioning it. A warm smile broke across his face as he remembered the previous evening. It had been everything he’d been fantasizing about for the last six months and much more. He rolled over in the bed intending to reach for Michaela and discovered to his disappointment that she was gone. Lifting himself up on his elbows, he raised his head and searched the room for her. He saw her on her knees in the bathroom scrambling to pick up the aspirin that had scattered all over the floor. “Drop something?” he asked, slightly amused at her position.
She looked up with a rueful smile. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you. I was just trying to grab a couple of aspirin. I seem to have a bit of a headache this morning.”
As Jordan rolled to his side the sheet dropped to his waist clearly revealing his naked chest and abdomen and his morning erection prodded eagerly against the sheet seeking attention. Propping his head in his hand he noted with a great deal of satisfaction that Michaela couldn’t help herself from staring. Treating her to a devilish grin, his blue eyes gleaming, he said, “I’ll just bet you do. Didn’t I warn you about that last night?”
“I seem to recall you telling me it was okay as long as I didn’t pass out,” she muttered as she finished gathering the last of the aspirin.
Jordan would have helped her with her task if he hadn’t been admiring the enticing view of her cleavage the robe afforded while she was bent picking up the aspirin. He felt himself responding and thought he was ready for some morning fun deciding to tell her about the expired condoms later, much later. He wanted to call her back to the bed now, or better yet he thought, he would go get her. Acting on his decision he started to rise out the bed. “Michaela …,” he began, his voice was husky.
Michaela appeared panicked causing Jordan to pause in his actions. She got up quickly from the bathroom floor immediately putting her hand out in front of her to halt him. “Stop! Look Jordan before you get up, I have a few things to say.”
Jordan was a little stunned by her reaction. He’d intended to bring her back to the bed for some hot sex and Michaela was acting as if he was intent on assault. He arched a brow at her inquiringly. “Okay, go ahead,” he said slowly, completely perplexed by her mood.
Taking a deep breath she began speaking as fast as she could. “About last night, I think we’ll both agree that we were drinking and things just sort of got out of hand. I’m sure you don’t want to put our friendship at risk any more than I do so I think it would be best if we just pretended this never happened. After all we’re both mature adults and there is no reason for one stupid night to ruin a great friendship, right?” She gave him a hopeful look as she finished her long-winded speech.
Jordan hadn’t known what to expect when Michaela began talking, but it certainly wasn’t that she wanted them to be just friends. How he could he possibly be lying here naked in her bed after sharing not one but several very intimate lovemaking sessions and then be informed that he had been relegated to the friend zone once again? He had been so sure that he had left it behind, never to be revisited. “You want us to be friends?” he asked slowly, positive he must have misunderstood the intent of her little diatribe.
She nodded her head smiling reassuringly. “Yeah, we’re friends, just like always.”
Jordan watched those cute little chestnut curls bounce while she nodded her head. The thought drifted through his mind that he was in love with a lunatic. She wanted to be friends after the incredible evening they had just shared; it didn’t make sense. What could possibly be going through that curly topped head of hers? Was she really not interested in him in that way? She had seemed extremely interested last night, but then again she had been under the influence. No fucking way was he returning to the friend zone.
She watched a number of expressions cross his face as he absorbed what she had to say. Then a hard look she had never before seen appeared. “No!” His voice was hard, uncompromising.
Startled by both the tone of his voice and his monosyllabic response she could only respond in a stunned voice. “No?”
“No,” he said, as he got off the bed oblivious to his nudity. He bent down and began picking up the discarded condom wrappers. He walked over to her and held them up to her face. “What are these?”
She could feel the restrained fury vibrating through his body and shit, he was sporting a very big erection. To say she felt intimidated was an understatement. This was a side of Jordan she had never seen before. Where was her relaxed, easy going friend? “Mmmm…condom wrappers?”
His voice was tight as he said, “That’s right, and how many are there?”
Okay so he was really pissed. She felt her anxiety go up one more notch. “Four?”
He threw the wrappers down on the floor in obvious frustration. “That’s right, four. We didn’t have one quick and dirty session of drunken sex that we can’t remember. We had sex all night long. Not once, but four times, and let’s not forget that I went down on you in your living room before we even made it to the bedroom. So do you remember all of those times?”
She cringed inwardly. Okay so this was getting awkward. “Well, yes of course I do.”
“So you really weren’t that drunk that you can say you didn’t know what you were doing, were you?” he asked in an aggressive tone.
Was she on trial? Cause it was beginning to feel that way. “Okay, so I guess I wasn’t that drunk, but really do you want to ruin a friendship because of little too much champagne?”
His patience was at the end and his irritation was growing by the minute. He looked directly into her eyes and said, “I did not have too much champagne. Do you really think the only reason I slept with you was because I was drunk?”
Okay so who was this guy anyway? “Well, I guess I sort of did.”
He grabbed her chin firmly between his fingers. “Let’s get this straight, I’ve wanted you since the first time I saw you. I’ve been waiting for you to get over your breakup with Noah. It wasn’t accidental sex, Michaela.”
“Really? I mean, we’ve been friends for a while and nothing has ever happened, so I just thought nothing ever would.”
“We’re not friends. We’re lovers now. Deal.” His voice was resolute.

You shouldn’t mix business with pleasure.
Yet pleasure seems to be the one and only thing on Charlize’s mind the moment Connor steamrolls into her life. Desperate to save her family company, prove she’s more than a pretty face and worthy of being CEO, pleasure is a distraction she can’t afford.
She doesn’t want a bodyguard, especially not one whose caveman heroics kick her libido into hyperdrive. But surrounded by enemies and an attacker on the loose, there’s only one man she can trust with her life.
Connor knows better than to get personal with clients. Yet there couldn’t be anything more personal about his feelings for Charlize. From the moment he clapped eyes on her he wanted nothing more than to throw her over his shoulder and really give her something to scream about. He’ll get his uptight she-cat to unwind, preferably one orgasm at a time.
With Connor in her office, her home, driving her to sweet, merciless distraction, there’s only so long Charlize can resist his sexy, dominant brand of protection
EXCERPT
They made use of her mostly empty living room for training, standing barefoot in the middle of the room. Charlize glanced at the hardwood floor.
“Wouldn’t this be safer on the rug?”
“We won’t be doing throws today,” he said and circled her, walked around her three times.
She refused to turn her head and follow him.
“Here’s how it’s going to work. I’m going to show you a dozen simple techniques. At the end I’m going to test you.”
She frowned. “Like a quiz?”
“No, like a challenge. We see what you’ve remembered. Get you to think on your feet, force you to think quickly and react fast.” He stopped in front of her. “If you pass the challenge, you win—and trust me, you want to win.”
Charlize folded her arms and tried not to look as if she caught the suggestion in his tone. “We’ve played this game before. If you want to prove you’re bigger, stronger and better at this Karate crap than I am, then I concede—you’re better.”
He grinned a devilish smile that reminded her just how quickly he could make her heart race. “This is a new game. All you have to do is prove you were paying attention. It’s not a contest, it’s a challenge—and the stakes are higher.”
She uncrossed her arms. “How high?”
“At the end of this I’m going to fuck you.” He slinked closer in his prowling-panther way of moving. “How I do that is up to you. Either you get to fight me off, put up your best resistance, or I own you and you do exactly as I say. If you win, you get to choose how it happens.”
Charlize took a breath then reminded herself to breathe out. Told her hands not to shake at her sides.
“But if you fail, I’ll take you how I want.”
How he wants? Her body rushed with adrenaline. Part of her wanted to lose just to see which option turned him on. She wanted him rough. As impolite as that might be, as much as it fell outside what she’d done before, she acknowledged the desire—but this was different. This was saying it out loud. This was conscious choice, deliberate. This was agreeing to some kind of kinky role-play. None of which she could bring herself to accept.
“How the fuck is there a win for me in that?”
He closed the distance, made her look up at him, made her breathe in the scent of his clean body. “Because it’s what you want, kitten. But you’ve got to admit it.”
Her tongue fumbled in her mouth, which had apparently found new saliva glands. The idea of fighting him off sounded hot all right, but she couldn’t do that. Not with memories of the parking lot so raw.
But if he wanted to challenge her, then he could be challenged too. With something equally as hot. “Instead of the fighting, the other option is you do as I say.”
“You want to bargain for that? Sounds less fun to me.” He stepped back and positioned himself two feet in front of her. “Let’s get started.” He ran her through exercise after exercise. Showed her the vulnerable places on the body to target, how to sneak a hit to the throat before an attacker saw it coming. How to break every kind of hold, but more importantly he showed her how to look around. How to stop the world from closing in and see the things around her, things she could use to protect herself.
Her muscles ached by the end but she knew she had this.
“You been paying attention, kitten?” Connor asked.
“Does it look as if I’ve fallen asleep?”
He grasped her wrists. “You mean like you did last night? You’re going to pay for that you know. I’m still aching.”
“Only if I fail,” she whispered and twisted her arms free. “So was that score one for me?”
He chuckled and laugh lines dimpled his cheeks. “Sure. Are you ready for the next one?”
She nodded and stepped from foot to foot. He had her ducking, twisting and even landing a hit to his “vulnerable” place. Not that he reacted—the bastard. She was ready to savor the sweetness of victory when he caught her from behind, twisted his fist in her hair.
Breath evaporated from her chest. Fear streaked through her limbs. The imagined smell of tobacco tingled in her nose.
“Breathe, baby,” he whispered and air rushed back into her lungs.
Charlize slammed her heel into his foot, her elbow into his stomach and twisted—breaking the grip on her hair. She dropped to the floor and rolled out of reach.
Connor pursued with his slow, confident swagger. “Congratulations, you did well. So what is it, baby? Am I yours to command?” He tucked up the legs of his sweatpants and crouched in front of her. “Or are you mine?”

Enter the hot younger brother, Patrick. By the end you have one very happy couple and one not so happy couple. Yikes!

Can you WAIT? – Tessa is looking for love…BUT that’s it! At least for now. Why does it seem like everybody else is just out for a good time? Isn’t anyone willing to wait for sex that actually means something? It sure doesn’t seem like it to the curly haired prude. Hello Tucker!

Then you have Cassie. She waited just a bit too long to let her real feelings be known for her friend -turned- faux brother, Mark. Now seeing him with someone else is making her see red! Whoops. Who could’ve seen that coming? Oh, that’s right…everyone!!!

Everyone has FLAWs. – Oh Josh! You killed my girls in the first two books with your man-whore ways. But I loved ya anyway. You just needed to work a little harder for that special someone! And Aidan, my dear sweet Aidan, you most certainly deserve the gift of love. Just be careful, sometimes under that pretty wrapping paper is something ugly.

Becca and Jordyn realize they need to work through some of their own flaws before either of them can find that happy ending.

Time to PANIC. – Kent and Robin are reunited and ready for that perfect HEA. Too bad Robin doesn’t believe she can ever give it to Kent. But hey, time to grow up and realize that perfect comes in a lot of different ways.

Bailey gave Shayna twinkling lights, a night at the beach and then a little something extra. Now what should they do? Ummmmm….PANIC!!!!!

WARNING:  Food Play, Hot Sex, Latin Hunk

EXCERPT

What a knockout. He could stare at her all day. “Then let’s do it,” he said, pushing out his elbow so she could take his arm. She went for it, making him one happy dude.

They strode casually and comfortably, like a couple who’d known each other longer than a day. Gliding by the swimming pool, he couldn’t care less who saw him, and he didn’t even make eye contact with anyone. Destiny held her head high, her soft blond hair billowing with the dusk breeze. Every so often she glanced at him, and when she did, his strut grew more pronounced.

Christian dug out his access pass from his back pocket and swiped it. The secured glass door unlocked, and he held it open for her. His gaze rolled over her body dimensions. Crap. He had it bad.

Destiny followed a tiled hallway that led to the main entrance and elevators. Framed tropical artwork adorned the walls. Two mauve, upholstered high-back chairs, a floor lamp, and a small glass accent table made the lobby homey. Usually people were in and out, but right now they were alone. Christian reached for the elevator button at the same time Destiny did. His finger mashed hers.

She looked at him and grinned. “Did you do that on purpose?”

“Nope,” he said, showing both hands. But damn, he liked the contact.

Her mouth quirked. “What floor do you live on?”

“Eleventh,” he said, puzzled. “Are we going to my place or yours?”

“Let’s go to yours first.” Her gaze swept him from head to toe. “I want to make sure you’re who you say you are.”

No problem. He had nothing to hide. And he didn’t feel insulted either. The elevator bell chimed and the door slid open. A young good-looking guy sprung out. He nodded at Christian, and gave Destiny a brazen once-over. Christian could’ve popped the jerk.

Ladies first, Christian indicated to Destiny when the path had cleared. They stepped into the elevator, and he pressed number eleven on the panel. The door swooshed closed and soft instrumental music came on. They looked at each other and laughed.

“Don’t take it the wrong way, okay?” she asked, watching him.

He shrugged. “Hey, you can’t be too careful.” Obviously, she’d been spooked by the ex. Bastard had left her paranoid. It made his temper flare, but he didn’t want to think about that right now.

“It’s just that the last guy I trusted…” She looked down and her forehead crinkled.

He lifted her chin with his fingers, forcing her to look at him. “If it’s any consolation, I’m more afraid of you.”

Her eyes widened. “Why?”

“Do you have any idea how gorgeous you are?” His finger brushed her soft cheek. “Not that it makes it okay, but I could understand why a guy would lose his mind.”

She smiled. “I think his issues had little to do with me.”

The two of them alone.

An intimate space.

A fierce attraction.

Perfect time for a kiss.

But he held back. “Whatever his problem, it’s not yours anymore.” They stared each other down, her light eyes never wavering from his dark ones.

Her teeth dug into her bottom lip. “No,” she agreed, grasping his upper arm.

He palmed her lower back, drew her body close to his. Destiny wanted him to kiss her. He saw it in her eyes.

Andi Callaway has dreamed of becoming a published author her entire life.

Ford Delaney has always wanted nothing more than to escape his past.

An opportunity of a lifetime. This is what Andi finds when she returns home to Callaway Cove on summer break. A chance to work for her literary idol Ford Delaney is up for grabs, and she’s willing to risk everything—her boyfriend, her best friends, and her education—to get it.

She’s positive this will be the key to reaching her dreams. But the moment she begins working for the reclusive author, Andi realizes there’s more to him than just a name. As attraction builds between Andi and Ford, she begins to discover consequences must come hand-in-hand with something great—which could loosen control over her tightly wound life. And once romantic sparks fly, Andi’s other relationships start to crumble, Ford’s fame comes back to haunt him, and the heat they generate will either forge a powerful, enduring love or threaten everything she holds dear.

 EXCERPT

He went to pull away, but Andi caught his hand, holding it there.

He exhaled, breath caressing her skin. “How do you do it?” he asked.

She swallowed, a razor blade in her throat while his eyes searched hers. “Do what?”

His face became distorted and her vision blurred until she wondered if this all wasn’t just a dream.

“Get under my skin,” he whispered.

The second the words left his mouth, he leaned in and crushed his lips over hers, kissing her as though it was going to be his last time kissing anyone. She blocked out the world, blocked out every thought except of him and the warmth of his touch. His fingers trailed over her jaw, her throat, and moved over her cool, damp skin, leaving her breathless.

She tipped her head to the side, deepening the kiss, reveling at how the pain in her throat and the throbbing in her chest vanished with his touch. Never before had she felt this. As if she was soaring and falling at the same time. As if she was witnessing something exotic and rare. As if she could die right now and not care, as long as it was in his arms.

She reached up to him, running her hands through his hair, something she had wanted to do from that first day in his office. He groaned and every nerve came alive with each second his lips danced with hers. All her worries slipped away. She was invincible.

And then their lips parted and Ford breathed her name. But when she blinked her heavy eyelids open, seconds later, he was gone.

A surprise visit from Blake and Devon’s uncle, Dominic, demanding both vampires, come home immediately to find what is ailing his son Anton, puts everyone on edge. Can vampires get sick? Devon doesn’t appreciate Dominic’s demands, but agrees to fly back to Connecticut with Darby, since Blake has a job to finish up in California. Excited to meet more of Devon’s family, Darby is confused by Devon’s distance and coldness since Dominic’s visit.
In Connecticut, this only gets worse when a gorgeous Libby, Anton’s estranged wife, shows up unexpectedly and seems to have her sights set on Devon. To top it all off, there’s seems to be some pent up animosity, Anton and Devon have towards each other.
What is this strange power Libby has over the men in this family? And what’s wrong with poor Anton? Why does it seem that Anton and Devon hate each other? These are all questions Darby sets out to answer in this third volume of the Blood Series.

EXCERPT

Dominic smiled at her gesture and
said, “I’m sorry, miss, this is a private family matter and I just couldn’t
possibly stay. You understand, don’t you?” He said this dismissively as if
speaking to a servant; polite, but not sincere.
Darby saw that Devon
was irritated by his uncle’s rude behavior and was about to say something, when
Blake jumped out of his chair and said, “Sure, Dominic. They understand.”
He glanced at the others at the
table and gave
Devon
an imploring look, all the while helping his uncle with his coat. “We’ll speak
in the front yard, Dominic. Go back to your meal, enjoy! We’ll only be a
minute,” Blake said rather apologetically to Darby still standing, stunned, in
front of her seat.
Darby looked at the rest of the
people at the table and said, “I’ll get some champagne flutes, to enjoy our
lovely gift.” She excused herself as
Devon
and Blake led Dominic to the front yard.
They were almost to the black
limousine, when Dominic turned to the boys. “I’m in need of your help, boys.
Anton is terribly sick and I would like you both to come to
Connecticut
to help me determine what is ailing him.”
“I’m very sorry Anton is sick,
but that does not excuse your…”
Devon
started.
“What Devon
is trying to say, Dominic,” Blake interrupted, “is that we are not boys any
longer. We have lives here, jobs, commitments, significant others. We can’t
just up and leave.”
“Yes, I see you’ve hooked up with
a lively bunch of hooligans. Eating at a table with witches and werewolf swine.
How could you? So what, you with your Darby girl, and you with the werewolf
crossbreed creature? Both witches, I presume?”
“Yes. I am with Rowan, but you
don’t understand, Dominic,” Blake said.
Dominic’s eyes grew large. “How
despicable, boy! Didn’t I teach you anything? Didn’t you listen to a word I
told you? Your mother must be turning in her grave in shame. We are a family of
noble vampire blood. What a disgrace to your heritage. Vile. Disgusting!”
“That’s enough, Dominic. You are
wrong about werewolves, like many are wrong about vampires. You are mistaken…”
Devon
defended.
“How dare you? I am a professor
of science. I most definitely am not mistaken. I saw, with my own two eyes, the
horrific act of a werewolf. They are animals, not people.”
“You’re wrong, Dominic, very
wrong. These are good and decent people. They’ve risked their lives for us on
numerous occasions…” Blake tried to explain.
“Don’t bother explaining, Blake.
He won’t change his mind. He has his view, and that is the only view he’ll ever
see,”
Devon
said.
“I see your manners have been
severely degraded by the company you keep. I demand you come to
Connecticut
immediately. Maybe you’ll find your manners there and remember your place in
society.”
“I’m not leaving. Not for you and
most definitely not for Anton,”
Devon
said.
“Oh, grow up, boy. That was ages
ago. Let bygones be bygones already. I won’t take no for an answer. You will
both march in there, pack your things, and come home.”
Connecticut
is not our home. This is our home,
Oljone,
California.
Right here, with a bunch of great friends who are waiting for us to continue
our Thanksgiving feast,”
Devon
said as he turned and headed back to the house.
“Wait, Devon,”
Blake said.
Devon
stopped and slowly turned. “Dominic, won’t you please join us for dinner. Get
to know these people. They are family to us.”
Devon
said, “Don’t bother wasting your breath, Blake. Like I said, he’s already made
up his mind about them.”
“It’s Thanksgiving. You said
yourself,
Devon,
Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for family, friends and loved ones.
Dominic and Anton are our only blood relatives.”
“Fine. You’re right, Blake, I did
say that. Dominic, would you please join us for dinner?”
“Thank you for the offer but no.
I can’t. No, I won’t sit at a table with two werewolves. I am staying at the
Ritz-Carlton in
San Francisco.
Here are your tickets. We are leaving at
10:50 AM tomorrow. I
expect to see you on the plane.” He handed each of them a first class ticket.
“Whoa, wait a minute. I can’t go,
Dominic. I have to work. I have a project due, deadlines, I just can’t up and
leave,” Blake insisted.
“Fine, you will join us when you
are done with your commitments.”
“I’m not going either, Dominic.
This is my home, here with Darby. There is no love lost between Anton and me.
I’m sure he doesn’t want to see me any more than I want to see him. I’m sorry
he’s sick, but for God’s sake, he’s a vampire, he’ll heal. I’m sure he will be
fine.”
“No, Devon.
He won’t. He is rapidly declining. You must help me. I demand that you help
me.”
“You demand that I help you?
There’s nothing I can do for him. I’m not a doctor; you are. I’m a software
engineer. So is Blake. What could we possibly do for him?”
“You’re his family. You can be
his family. Maybe he will confide in you.”
“What makes you think if he
hasn’t confided in you, that he would do such a thing with me or Blake?”
“Because…you are his age. You
speak his language. You’re more understanding, like your mother.”
“Not where he’s concerned,” Devon
muttered under his breath.
“You must do this!” Dominic
yelled and turned red in the face, pounding a fist into his other hand, tears
welling in his ferociously angry eyes.
Blake said, “Hang on, now. You
both need to cool off a bit. Dominic, you’re going to blow a gasket. Relax.
Devon,
if Darby went with you to
Connecticut,
would you be willing to go and at least talk to Anton? See if maybe he would
confide in you? You never know. And if he’s really that sick, don’t you think
one of us should be there? We’re family, after all.”
“If Darby were politely invited
to come, and treated appropriately, yes, I may consider going to
Connecticut.”
“Dominic, would you be willing to
accept Darby as a guest in your home, treating her as such, for
Devon?”
He mulled this over, taking
longer than
Devon
would have liked, but he reluctantly agreed.
“As long as her mutant sister
does not come. Yes, I would accept the witch as a guest in my home providing
she behaves in a proper manner.”
“What the he…” Devon
started. Blake saw he was about to blow his top and interrupted.
“See, I knew this could be worked
out. Now, would you at least join us for a glass of champagne and invite Darby
properly, Dominic?”

Dominic grumbled and nodded.

Callie Cartwright is a college senior on the verge of graduating and getting the job of her dreams. But her illustrious shopping habit and expensive tastes backfire when her future employer gives her an ultimatum. She has less than six months to lower her debt or she’ll lose the job she’s worked so hard for.

His secret crush may be his undoing.

Dean Michaels has everything going for him. He’s a manager at the local coffee shop, a sophomore in college, star of the university basketball team, and don’t forget, gorgeous. And all she sees in him is the love for a brother.

But desperate times call for desperate measures.

When Callie concocts a crazy plan as a way to make quick money and pay down her debt, Dean’s feelings go into overdrive. It’s time to show her how he feels.

And the plan he proposes, just might be the one to finally catch the girl.

*Claiming Callie is part one of a series of four serial novellas and is approximately 28,000 words in length (about half the length of a full novel).

 EXCERPT

Callie Cartwright sweeps her golden locks off the side of her face and cocks her head. “Wha-what?”

Did I hear him right?

Mr. Bucek leans back in his chair, forehead wrinkled. His gaze focuses on her and he scratches his jaw, where his five o’clock shadow is already making its presence known. He resembles her father far more than she likes, and the memory of her dad pierces deep inside her like jagged glass.

“I’m sorry, but you heard me. You could be a real asset to us here, but we can’t hire you with your current financial situation.”

Callie closes her eyes. Inhale. Exhale.

“Okay,” she says, drawing out the word, her mind scrambling to come up with a solution. “I understand to an extent why you may not want an employee with a healthy spending habit, but—

“Healthy?” Mr. Bucek raises a brow. “You’ve got four credit cards, all completely maxed out. The total debt is more than enough to pay for a year’s worth of tuition. Not to mention, some of the accounts have been delinquent over the past year. Add to that the student loans you’re going to have after graduation, your car loan, and living expenses, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a rap sheet of bills for a fresh grad. And according to your credit report, your cards are like the revolving door at Macy’s.”

Raising a finger, she says, “I resent that. I much prefer Nordstrom.”

“I’m serious, Callie.”

Sighing, she shrinks back into her chair. Crap. That new Michael Kors handbag was a mistake. Damn all end-of-season sales to hell. She supposes she didn’t need that new pair of BCBG boots either, but they were so cute, with the mock zipper under the laces and…

Focus.

Her entire livelihood, her whole post-graduation plan, depends on getting this job with GG Financial. If she loses her spot here, she’s screwed.

She folds her hands in front of her and tries to keep her voice calm. “You’re telling me I may not get the job just because I happen to have an expensive shoe habit?” She forces a smile, but even she can feel it waver as Mr. Bucek’s lips don’t even twitch.

“Listen, you’ve been interning with us for over two years now. I’ve come to think of you like a daughter most of the time—”

Ouch. Callie raises a hand before he can say more. “I totally get it, but let’s cut to the chase here.” Callie takes a deep breath. She can feel the best job prospect for a mathematics major interested in finance slipping through her fingers like fine grains of sand. “I know this business inside and out. I can work any of the other interns—not to mention half your elementary staff—under the table. Who cares about my financial situation if I’m good at my job? What is it they say? ‘Those who can’t do, teach’? That’s what I do. I educate clients and I advise. I send them in the right direction for financial profit and success. I can help turn around distraught companies. I might have a poor financial forecast myself, but I’m damn good at this job. I’ve worked my butt off these last two years. Are you really telling me that at the end of the year, when you go to hire someone, you’re going to pick one of those dorks over me?” Callie nods outside Mr. Bucek’s office where two interns huddle in a cubicle, pretending not to listen. On their computer screen is World of Warcraft.

“Enough said.” Callie crosses her arms in front of her.

“World of Warcraft is like candy to nerds like those guys.” Mr. Bucek says and almost cracks a smile. Almost.

“You get my point,” she says, her voice firm.

She laid it all out on the table. Every bit of what she said is true, and Mr. Bucek knows it. She can see it in his eyes. There is nothing left to say. All she can do now is stare at him, batting her baby blues, in the hopes he might cave and retract his declination to hire her at the end of the semester.

Mr. Bucek sighs and brings a hand up to his face, rubbing away lines of tension in his forehead, then drops his hands and leans forward on his desk. “Okay, here’s the deal…” He clasps his hands together and catches her gaze. “GG Financial is one of the biggest, best advising firms in the nation. We can’t hire you with your current debt. My boss won’t let me, and I can’t say I blame him. How could we defend it to clients if they found out? Prudential Financial has been trying to get ahold of our major accounts and steal a chunk of our business for years. They’ve been nipping at our heels. If they heard of any black spots in our record, even if it’s just the poor credit and debt of a junior advisor, we’d lose our foothold and number-one spot. Our record thus far is spotless, and it’s because of our quality personnel on every level. We can’t have you handling people’s investments and making recommendations when your own spending is out of control and your credit’s a mess.”

Callie’s back dampens with sweat and her throat goes dry. She’s losing. “But—”

Mr. Bucek raises a hand. “But…I’ll give you this last semester before you graduate.”

Her pulse races and her ears prick at the sound of hope.

“At the end of the school year, as you know, we’ll be hiring one intern to join our team. If you can manage to get your spending under control, pay down some of your debt, and raise your credit score by graduation, the position is yours. Otherwise, we’ll probably give it to Steve.” Mr. Bucek’s lips flatten into a thin line as he glances at the two interns behind her.

Callie’s stomach dips as his words sink in. “That’s only five months,” she nearly chokes. It was impossible.

Mr. Bucek nods. “I know. Remember, you don’t have to be debt-free or have an eight-hundred-plus credit score. Just show significant improvement. That means no more credit cards!” He points a finger at her. “No more charging. No delinquencies. Every dime should be devoted to paying down your debt.”

Callie swallows over the knot in her throat. “And if I can’t?”

He shrugs, and his eyes go soft. “I’ll be sad to see you go, but I’ll write you one hell of a letter of recommendation.”

Nausea bubbles in her gut. She has almost twenty-five thousand dollars in credit card debt, a spending habit that would put Kim Kardashian to shame—and five months to fix the situation. But what choice does she have? She can’t lose this opportunity. Not after all the work she has put into it. Not with the starting salary for a junior advisor at GG being twice that of other companies. Not so close to graduation. And especially not to Steve!

She glances out into the office and sees Steve hovering over the computer, now playing Final Fantasy and laughing like a hyena, his thin wire frames falling off his nose. Oh, hell no.

Callie turns her gaze back to Mr. Bucek. She has no idea if she can even do it, and she can feel the new Calvin Klein dress she wanted slip through her grasp as she says, “It’s a deal.”

Five months. Twenty-five thousand dollars. And a lifetime of spending.

Dangerous Intersection Ahead

Marketing analyst Becca Daniels has a life that looks good on paper – a coveted promotion in an exciting new city and a successful, handsome fiancé. But with her Hawaiian honeymoon fast approaching, she has to face her biggest fear…water. She can’t swim. On her way to her first swimming lesson, however, she veers left instead of right and nearly runs over her hot, new instructor.

Caution: Rising Waters

Liam Caldwell has put his life on hold to look after his sick mother. The last thing he needs is the hit-and-run brunette who ruined his motorcycle disrupting the adult swim class. But from the first lesson, he realizes there’s more to the curvy, smart-mouthed Becca than meets the eye, and no matter what he does, he can’t resist her luscious lips and her driving determination.

No U-turn

With each lesson, Becca discovers that what looks good on paper isn’t making her happy. Should she play it safe in the shallow end with her career and fiancé? Or should she dive into deep waters with a man who offers passion and freedom like she’s never imagined?

Enjoy an excerpt:

Understanding slowly dawned on her face. “I’m floating? All on my own?”

He nodded, and she froze. Down went her ass, and up went her arms, windmilling like before. This time, however, he was prepared. He swooped in with one arm and snagged her waist to keep her from sinking.

A repeat of their past chest-to-chest mamba occurred, only this time, she didn’t beat him with her fists. “I’m never going to swim, am I?”

He made sure she was steady on her feet, then headed for the edge of the pool. “Wait right there.”

He climbed out of the pool and grabbed a kickboard. On the way past the bench, he snagged her flippers. Back in the water, he lifted her up and sat her on the edge, then slipped the flippers on her feet.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“Just hang with me.” After securing the flippers, he lifted her back into the water and demonstrated how to use the kickboard. He kicked back to her and handed her the board. “Your turn.”

Hesitantly, she fingered the board. “I don’t know about this.”

“I do.” He wrapped one hand around her arm and the other around her waist. “I’ve got you. Now do exactly what I did. Ready?”

She shook her head but held the board out in front of her. “Should I hum?”

“What?”

“Should I hum? You know, like when you taught me to blow bubbles.”

He laughed. “Whatever rocks your world, Becca.”

She smiled. “Are you making fun of me?”

“Never.” He positioned her in the water, kept her from sinking. “Now kick those legs, hard.”

With his help, she scooted across the pool from one side to the other. Her face morphed into that self-satisfied look she got every time she accomplished something. She lowered her feet and nearly jumped up and down in the water. “I did it. I kinda, sorta swam!”

“Yep.” He enjoyed seeing that look on her face, and the bobbing up and down in the water wasn’t terrible either. “You did.”

“Oh, my God, thank you!” She threw her arms around his neck, bringing those luscious, wet curves into full body contact. Her flippers nailed his ankles as she tried to stand on his feet.

And then, without warning, she brushed his cheek with a kiss. “Thank you. I don’t know what to say.” She went to kiss him again, except he moved his face, and her lips, thank you, Jesus, landed on his.

They were wet and warm, and oh, so soft. When she didn’t pull away, he lingered there, tasting, and hoping she didn’t knee him in the balls.

Her body relaxed into his, her lips parting on a sigh. “I…uh…”

Pull back. Huge breach of teacher-student relations. His hands were one thing, supporting her in the water, but there was no way he should have his lips anywhere on her body.

But he didn’t push her away. No sir, Alex would have been proud. Liam wrapped his arms around Becca and kissed her again.

She responded, pressing her breasts against his chest. And then, like a light switch, she jerked away, putting distance between them. “What am I doing?” she said, rubbing her fingers over her lips.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “That was completely unprofessional, and it will never happen again.”

Seemingly tongue-tied, she sputtered. Cleared her throat, and tried again. “It’s not you. It’s uhm…I, uh…I got excited, and sometimes I do really stupid things when I’m excited.”

Stupid things. Kissing him being one of them. Okay, then. Their time was nearly up. “One more time across?”

Swimming got in a person’s blood. He’d seen it a hundred times with the kids—and adults—he’d trained. Even the smallest taste of that kind of freedom made people long for more.

“That would be awesome.” Becca grabbed the kickboard and avoided his eyes. “I’m psyched.”

He was too. He only had to remember to keep his hands to himself.

My Review

I really enjoyed this book. Becca was a wonderful character even though she was really indecisive. She just got engaged to Holden who she had been dating for a while because he asked her in her office full of  people.  He gave her a hideous pink ring so he doesn’t even realize she doesn’t like pink.  Then he wants the honeymoon and wedding in Hawaii while they do an Ironman competition.  He doesn’t even realize she is scared of water and can’t swim.  She goes to learn to swim and meets Liam, a really hot sensitive swim instructor.  They get along really good and she breaks up with Holden who doesn’t take “No” for an answer.  No more spoilers so read the book. I really enjoyed the book, I read it in one sitting and it had several comedic parts. A good light hearted read. 5*****

Nana Malone

USA Today Best Seller and iTunes Breakout Books author, Nana Malone’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she borrowed from her cousin.

It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.

While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, in the meantime Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is.

Destiny has a way of sneaking up on you .  . . or of smacking you in the face.
Hugh Latimer’s coping with a few problems just now. A broken hand, missing the European rugby tour . . . and a half-brother and sister who are playing havoc with his love life. Instead of packing down in the scrum, he’s driving the carpool to ballet–or forgetting it’s his turn. When he hears his neighbor wailing out bad pop in the wee hours, it’s the last straw.
Josie Pae Ata is a fortunate woman. A new house, good friends, a gorgeous boyfriend–oh, and stardom, too. Getting involved with her new neighbors would bring risks she doesn’t need. But life has a way of changing the rules. And when you get more than you can handle, sometimes all you can do is hang on for the ride.
EXCERPT

And then he was standing just the other side of the kitchen bench, and she was looking at the depth of his chest, being reminded about the size of his arms, and he was smiling at her, and her hands had stilled on her knife.
“Do the ballet run, then?” she asked him, forcing herself to start cutting through the dense orange flesh again.
“Yeh. I take it you finished the job? Get your swim?”
“Yeh.” She smiled herself. “Bet I had a better time.”
He laughed. “Bet you did. I was going to say I’d take the kids home, because we all need showers, but d’you need a hand here first?”
She needed to stop smiling at him. “Again, a hand’s what it’d be. Don’t think you could do too much with one.”
“I can do quite a lot with one,” he said, the look in his eyes letting her know exactly what he could do, and suddenly, her oven wasn’t the only thing warming up. All he was doing was standing there, and he was still sending tingles to places they had no business being, evoking every shivery, delicious sensation that the most heated on-screen kiss failed to arouse, and it took all the training she had not to show it.
She looked down again hastily, resumed her hacking progress. “Nah, got this. Go take your shower. Then come back and help me christen my new deck.”
He glanced sharply at her, opened his mouth to say something, then shut it, and she realized what she’d said and very nearly blushed. She never got flustered with men, and she’d worked with, dated, been chatted up for years by men infinitely more handsome, polished, and urbane than Hugh could dream of being, but she was flustered now.
All he said, though, was, “Right. See you in a bit. Hour or so OK? Enough time?”
“Perfect,” she said. “See you then.” And kept chopping her vegies, moving around her dark little kitchen in her bare feet, and did her best to pretend that this was about a thank-you and nothing more.

PERSONAL STUFF: I met my husband Rick at UC Berkeley when I was 21, so I really do believe in True Love and Happily Ever After—which helps a lot in writing about them! We renewed our vows a few years ago with the help of our two grown sons. Our home base when we’re not having our own adventures is in Berkeley, California, where the summers are foggy and the food shopping is the greatest.
WHY NEW ZEALAND: My husband’s job as an engineer, and mine as a marketing consultant, have given us the opportunity to live in many different wonderful places in the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. During the latest stint, 15 months living and working in Auckland, I fell in love with New Zealand: the beauty and diversity of the landscape (not to mention the seascapes), the Maori culture and its integration into the country’s life, and, perhaps more than anything, the people: modest, good-humored, unfailingly polite and hospitable, and so very funny.  I wanted to share what I loved so much about the country with everyone I knew—and didn’t know!
THE BOOKS: We had traveled to Wellington to watch the final of the Rugby World Cup in a pub as the start of a North Island holiday. I was absolutely overwhelmed by the intensity of All Black fever that gripped the entire nation during the World Cup, and the stature of the players themselves at all times. I had never seen anything remotely like it. I started wondering what it would be like to be so intensely admired and instantly recognizable in a country that has zero tolerance for bad behavior—and how hard it would be to find the right partner in that kind of spotlight. And that is where JUST THIS ONCE was born—walking through the rhododendron gardens of Mt. Taranaki, two days after the World Cup final. Writing that first page was terrifying, but within weeks, I knew that I’d finally figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up.
WHEN I’M NOT WRITING: I raise bantam chickens, foster Labrador Retrievers, and try to remember to cook dinner for my long-suffering husband.
