 DEADSPEAK2. The chilling new entry in the Deadspeak Mystery Series

Things look different when you’re dead.

It’s Halloween and a group of teens throw a party at Harbinger Falls’ most celebrated haunted estate. It’s all fun and games until a session with a Ouija board guides the partygoers to the body of a young girl hidden in the attic.

Detective Kimberly Trent is assigned the case and quickly discovers that all is not as it seems. First, there’s the connection between the death and a string of petnappings terrorizing the neighborhood. Then there’s the suicide note that only leaves more questions than answers. A visit from Kimberly’s ghostly friend Griff Lindon sheds an unwelcome light. It seems she’s had a run in with the newly deceased who tells her she’s been murdered.

This is the second in The Deadspeak Mysteries. The entries are meant to be read in sequential order and do not standalone. In each book, you’ll find a new murder for Kimberly Trent to solve. You’ll also find the continuing search for who murdered Kim’s sister Elizabeth. Each book will take you closer and closer to finding out the identity of The Hex Killer, the serial killer who ended Elizabeth’s short life. It will also bring you to the heart of the evil that’s come back to life to wreak revenge.

Excerpt:

 “No, you can’t come over to explain! I know what I saw!”

Mia Chaukes, the pleasant girl with the quiet demeanor, was shouting. It was unusual for the sixteen-year-old to raise her voice or be this upset, but she wasn’t backing down. She couldn’t. Not after what she’d witnessed.

It went against everything she believed in.

Her eyes traveled the length of the pink walls. It had been her favorite color when she was younger and always put her in a good mood, but would it still work today?

She sought comfort from the color—and from the shelves lined with the vestiges of her past. Unicorns, teddy bears, and other stuffed toys were there with sunny smiles and arms outstretched for a hug, but they only served as a reminder that things had changed and would never be the same.

“Don’t you dare tell me that!” she blasted as more desperation came through the receiver … desperation and elaborate excuses.

Anything but the truth.

She wouldn’t be lied to … not anymore.

“Don’t you dare tell me I’m imagining things! I’ll hang up … I mean it!”

What would have happened if she hadn’t taken that way home? Or if she’d left earlier or later? Endless possibilities, one worse than the other, shot through her mind, each making her sick to her stomach. But before the nausea disappeared, an equally disturbing question rose to the surface.

What did happen?

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Born in the idyllic, sleepy town of Ithaca, NY, Ruth Bainbridge has been a lover of mysteries for her entire life.

Ever since a child, she has consumed detective stories at regular intervals, becoming enamored with all the superstars of crime. She loved nothing more than to match wits with the likes of Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Thomas Pitt, Lord Peter Wimsey, Richard Jury, and Edward X Delaney, becoming inspired by their brilliance. Hoping to emulate her writing idol’s achievements in dreaming up such characters, she started composing her own short stories.

However, life interfered with her plans of becoming the next hopeful to try a life of crime—on paper at least. Devoting herself to her marriage and the raising of four children, the empty nest syndrome gave her the impetus to return to her first love—murder.

GENRE:   Thriller

BLURB:

A year after serial killer Michael Rhodes is executed and allowed to donate part of his brain as an organ transplant, Sergeant Wade McKinnon gets called to a murder scene that shares uncanny similarities to those of the late Michael Rhodes. Other similar killings happen around Seattle, and Wade seems to be the only person still alive who knows enough about Michael Rhodes’s murders to be able to replicate them. When evidence found at one of the crime scenes points to Wade as the killer, he races to find the real culprit before it’s too late to clear his own name.

Elle is overjoyed when her husband, Brian, gets a second chance at life when he receives a partial brain transplant after suffering a debilitating stroke at the age of thirty-seven. Their lives seem to return to normal, but Elle notices a disturbing change in Brian’s behavior. When Elle learns that her husband’s brain cell transplant came from Michael Rhodes, she fears that Brian now has the mind of a serial killer.

Excerpt:

Goosebumps formed on her arms. She remembered it being all over the news when Michael Rhodes was executed and knew it was around the same time that Brian received his transplant. But it had never occurred to her that Brian’s transplant could have come from him.

She went to the computer nook just off the kitchen and opened her laptop. She ran a Google search for “Michael Rhodes organ donor.” A list of news articles came up, all of them dated just over a year before. She clicked on an article from Seattle’s biggest news station.

A video played at the top of the article, and Elle recognized the blonde reporter who appeared with a breaking news story. Elle turned up the volume on the laptop.

“Today, for the first time in our nation’s history, a convicted killer on death row will be allowed to donate his organs after his execution. A medical transport team will be standing by to connect the prisoner to ECMO, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, after he is pronounced clinically dead. His body will then be airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.”

Elle closed the laptop and lifted the paper towel from her cut finger. Still bleeding. She reapplied the pressure and stared down at her computer. The late nights. Brian’s strange behavior. The lies. What if he wasn’t having an affair after all? What if Michael Rhodes’s brain cells had somehow changed Brian into a different person? No, she told herself, that wasn’t possible. If it were, it would mean I am married to a serial killer.

REVIEW:

Wade is the police detective who put serial killer Michael Rhodes away last year.   Rhodes has been executed but now an eerie duplicate serial killer is killing women the exact same way.  Elle is married to Brian, won’t give too much away about him, but he received a partial brain transplant last year.  Elle has just found out he received the brain cells from serial killer, Rhodes.  This book has a lot of suspense and Wade is now being set up for the new murders.  Can he save himself and Elle?  This is an awesome story with amazing twists and turns.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
When Claire Luna is kidnapped and taken to a remote island, her predictable life is torn to shreds. She thought she understood grief, loss and loneliness. But nothing prepared her for the island.
Tucker Knight had his world turned upside down when he was a young teen. He’d known love, security and normality. But things changed, and somehow he lost his innocence along the way.
Barrier takes you on a compelling, thrilling and sometimes brutal journey of Claire and Tucker, who in a bid to control their destiny, must learn about trust and submission. And also about love.
The island is under the control of Dr. Stephen Bell, a scientist obsessed with the secrets of humanity through genetic engineering. Claire is part of his obsession, and quickly comprehends Bell’s twisted intentions. She is forced to decide between submission and life-altering consequences. In her desperate attempt to survive, Claire surprises Bell and Tucker with her strength to fight.
But, can she trust Tucker? Is he her enemy or her savior? Claire understands that to surrender means to survive, but can she endure? Tucker can’t help but be enamored by the spirited and determined Claire, but to survive, he must face and overcome his haunting past. Up until Claire’s arrival on the island, he had never thought himself capable, or deserving, but perhaps this was his chance to finally do the right thing.
Excerpt:
I’m stubborn, strong to a fault, and fiercely independent, especially when I shouldn’t be. I’ve had to learn my way around this world sooner than most. Circumstance made sure of that. It’s true my life has been burdened with difficulty. I’m not complaining, though. It has made me the person I am. It made me courageous in ways superman wouldn’t understand. Mostly, it has taught me to never give up. Even when the water was rising and it seemed I would drown, I fought, and survived.
My eyes eased open. The yellow light flooded my pupils and made them tiny, needle-sized, black dots. The ground shifted under me like the waves of the ocean. Gently, my body waved back and forth. Was I drugged?
Since my eyes were useless, I tried to use my other senses to assess my surroundings.
A ticking clock, somewhere on a wall, clicked the seconds away. Over me, I could hear a distant hum from the lights. I had a latent awareness of danger. My nerves danced and twitched. I struggled to discern the reason from my muddled brain.
The sound of fabric rubbing against something hard triggered my head to whip around, which also made the swaying worse. My eyes struggled to focus through the blinding light.
Someone else was in the room, draped across an uncomfortable-looking, gray chair. Blonde hair, almost white, fell across the girl’s face. Her head hung off the arm of the chair in an uncomfortable way. One of her arms hung lifelessly off the edge and jerked slightly.
This was not my small apartment. It was unfamiliar, definitely not a room I had ever been in before.
GENRE: erotic thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Stood up by her boyfriend, she goes home with a woman…
Straight-laced coed Angie has never felt daring enough to…experiment. Until tonight. The skin around Heather’s lips is soft, unlike the stubble Erik lets grow in, and the night unfolds like an erotic dream, tapping into an unexplored part of Angie’s body and mind.

But Heather’s seduction turns into a nightmare when Angie wakes up tied to the bed and is told she can’t leave. Alternately seduced and tormented by her lover-turned-captor, Angie is pulled ever deeper into a twisted world of pain-for-pleasure and multimedia exploits. As the stakes rise, both women give into a desire for connections neither has had, and Angie’s struggle to escape becomes a bigger dilemma: Would she leave if she could?

Winner of the Golden Palm Contest for New Adult Romance, this erotic thriller dares to explore the darker side of our fantasies and their sometimes unintended consequences.

Excerpt:

Her taut frame is sandwiched between an attractive couple. They don’t look much older than me, but they look fashionable and carefree, like they belong in a place like this. She’s suggestively pushing back and forth to the DJ’s evocative beats, letting her blonde mane bathe in the crest of the girl’s neck, until the guy grabs it and pulls it back, like he doesn’t want to get left out of anything. Their hands wander freely. It’s almost as if they’re not on a dance floor, but in a bedroom. Doing it standing up. She pulls the girl in tightly. She’s commanding. How I wish I was.

I turn my gaze back to my near-empty drink and the cell phone next to it. Still no response from my boyfriend to my voicemail and several text messages and it’s almost midnight. Where is he? I swirl the ice cubes in my glass.

He knows I’m not really into nightclubs. The drinking, the posturing…it makes Erik feel like he’s part of a squad. It makes me feel like I don’t fit in. But I don’t want to disappoint him, or myself. I can’t spend all of college immersed in books. These are supposed to be the defining years of my life, brimming with experiences that you reference forever, experiences that help you figure out who you really are.

I look back up at the mirrored wall. She has this look on her face, like there’s nowhere else she’d rather be. As if time has stopped just for her, so that she can feel every tensed, slick muscle, hear every throb of desire. Will I ever feel that?

Q&A WITH AUTHOR

Where do you get your book ideas?

Particularly for The Need, I was inspired by the screenplay my husband wrote. The Need started out as a spec script that my husband was hired to write in 2009. Unfortunately, the financing for the project fell through, which happens a lot in Hollywood. My husband shopped the script to a few more interested producers and agents, but that certain bit of magic that you need to make a movie come to life did not materialize.

I loved the story. Two strong female characters that get twisted into this dark love affair…it was the distraction I was looking for at the time (late 2012), so I asked my husband if I could adapt his screenplay into a book. He loved the idea, and in 2015, The Need was born. Do you write outline to start or just start writing? Outlines have definitely helped me write a first draft quicker and there always comes a point, when I really need to finish a book that I jot down some kind of outline. It may be really loose, or more detailed, but it becomes key.

However, I do also have a lot of fun with just thinking up a great character(s) and letting them run wild on the page to see what happens. A great technique I learned many years ago in a writing class had us writing the back story of a fresh character every week. Really delving into their childhood and the types of friends they had and lovers they took, and tragedies and experiences that shaped them. When I get stuck sometimes, I go back to this technique and start scribbling back story. Usually, by the time I’m done, I know the next turn the story is supposed to take.

How long does it normally take to write the book before edits?

I am not the fastest at writing a first draft, and it’s something I continually strive to improve. Right now, my average seems to be six months, but I would love to get down to three months because it would help me get books out faster. Plus, it’s always easier to edit, so I am trying to let go of the idea that my first drafts have to have everything figured out. It’s alright to leave placeholders for plot points and re-visit them during the editing process.

Are you an indie author or mainstream author?

Right now I still consider myself an indie author, but my goal is to become more of a hybrid author at some point. I love self-publishing, and my team of editors, designers, and marketers that I bring on board at different stages, but I would love to have an agent or publisher that helps guide my author career, and takes my stories to the next level, for example film or television options.

How did you get started, can you give people wanting to write an idea how to get started?

My very first book project was The Dentist and The Toothfairy; a short story that I turned into an illustrated novel with an artist out of Montreal, Canada. Jerome Prieur was a fairly well-established artist at the time with some good art gallery connections, so we published the book with the goal to sell it mainly at art galleries.

That is not how I would advise other writers to get started. My experience with The Dentist and The Toothfairy was thrilling, but very time-consuming and costly. If you’re a writer that wants to get published, write every day, complete one or two manuscripts, join writing organizations and groups that will help you network with various people in the industry, go to industry conferences. Learn as much as you can about the business side so that you can eventually decide whether you want to self-publish or work with an agent or publisher, or both. There are so many great opportunities for aspiring authors these days, but at the end of the day, you have to be committed to your writing.

Code word: FOLIAGE!

excerpt

He prayed silently as he approached the front door of the family home he no longer owned. As he opened it, feeling the unlatched door give way, he knew he had arrived too late. The sound of his wife weeping echoed in the other end of the house, and a single gunshot rang out. He ran to the back parlor, but a man in the doorway blocked his entry. His wife lay on the temple bed, naked, bruised; a single line of blood mixed with snot dripped from her nose. The worst had happened. She stared blankly at the smoke rising from the gun barrel pointed down at her dead brother-in-law.

The man stood motionless, gripping the briefcase full of cash, an utter failure. The gun now pointed in his direction as the killer-rapist walked toward him. The accomplice continued to restrain him with a raised finger. Young, barely twenty-five years old but wise in the ways of rape and murder, he tucked the gun into his jacket and slipped the briefcase from the man’s grip. He opened the case and eyeballed the amount of cash. He removed one bundle and handed it to his victim. “Spend what you have left wisely, and don’t do anything else foolish.” The killer nodded to his cohort that they were leaving.

“You are from a good Pakistani family, a fellow Mohajir. There is nothing noble in what you are doing,” the man whimpered.

“And yet you are still alive.” The two thugs walked out and continued casually down the road, confident no one would pursue them.

BLURB:

Laura Holland awakes in the middle of the night to see a stranger standing in her bedroom doorway. She manages to defend herself from the would-be rapist, though he threatens to return as he retreats. Traumatized with recurring nightmares, Laura seeks therapy and is exposed to a unique treatment called EMDR. She also seeks self-protection— buying a gun against the wishes of her husband. When Laura learns she could have gone to prison had she shot her fleeing assailant, she decides to write a hypothetical legal case using the details of that night. She enlists the help of criminal defense lawyer, Thomas Bennett, who proves to be well versed in the justice system but has an uncanny resemblance to her attacker. As the two work together to develop the story, Laura’s discomfort escalates particularly when Thomas seems to know more about that night than he should. Reality and fiction soon merge as her real life drama begins to mirror the fiction she’s trying to create.

Excerpt:

Run. Run faster. As much as I strained my legs to move, they were immobile, like I was waist deep in quicksand.

Why can’t I move?

I tried to scream for help but my mouth was full, like it was stuffed with cotton—no sound would escape.

I felt something clutching my shoulder. No, it was someone. He was pushing me forward and then yanking me back. I tried to jerk away but he had a tight grip, like a vice.

I have to break free.

The tugging got harder, more forceful. He was calling my name— over and over. He knew my name.

“Laura, Laura.”

I jolted awake—my husband’s hand still on my shoulder.

“Honey, wake up. You’re having another bad dream.”

Slowly, I turned over in bed and looked at him—his dark brown eyes were fixated on me. I could see them clearly as the light from the bathroom brightened our bedroom.

For a month now, we had slept with this light on.

I could see the small wrinkle on his forehead. I loved that wrinkle though wished he didn’t have good reason to be so concerned. I was enduring the nightmares, but he had to deal with my tossing and mumbling in terror.

I remember when we first met—ten years ago in chemistry lab at Georgia Tech. He had walked up to me with those warm eyes and a charming, confident smile and asked, “Want to be partners?”

Two years later he took me to Stone Mountain Park, rented a small rowboat and, in the moonlight, he pulled out a diamond ring and asked me again, “Want to be partners?”

Life had seemed just about perfect.

Until now.

BLURB:

Foraging the cyber-world for puzzle pieces…

Zeus Hernandez, a Black Raven partner, is pulled away from a top-secret project to be the personal bodyguard to lawyer Samantha Fairfax. Terrorists have rendered the future frightening and uncertain, but Zeus and Samantha’s past makes two things crystal clear: she’ll be furious to see him and he can’t refuse the job.

Sorting pieces as stakes rise…

Danger surrounds the International Terrorism Tribunal, a court convened to combat terrorism. Samantha is thrust into the limelight when her mentor dies as the trial convenes in Paris, France. Her role requires steadfast focus and nerves of steel. She’s determined to do her job and move her life ahead, according to plan…without Zeus. He’s determined she’ll reconsider.

Completing the puzzle as their worlds collide…

EXCERPT

Black Raven was her grandfather’s go-to security company, and he’d already made the hiring call by the time he first told her his idea. With steadfast insistence, and continued reference to the horrors of terrorist acts that the ITT was examining, he’d worn her down in repeated phone calls. She’d given her grandfather one stipulation; she’d agree to Black Raven protection, but she did not want Jesus Hernandez to have anything to do with her on-site security detail. She didn’t want to see him or hear from him, and she damn well expected her grandfather to make this happen without it becoming an issue.

Jesus Hernandez.

Zeus to anyone who knew him.

Once, years earlier, she’d known him well. Or so she’d thought. Turned out she hadn’t known him at all. She focused her gaze on the intricately cut crystal water pitcher that the waiter placed on the table. In the last twenty-four hours, she’d been too busy with work to worry about whether her grandfather had truly understood the gravity with which she’d made the stipulation. She hadn’t intended the demand as a request. She hadn’t intended it as something her grandfather could consider and reject.

Now, with the hard knock marking the arrival of the private security company and the literal changing of the guard for the amicus team, her stomach twisted into a hard, nervous ball. Samuel knew the reasons why she didn’t want Zeus there. At least he knew some of the reasons why. Surely her grandfather had damn well listened to her?

Knock. Knock. The email notification finally flashed that the message and the attachments were ‘sent.’ The cc copy that she’d sent to herself appeared in her inbox, with an accompanying ding, just as Lorenzo put a vase of fresh flowers on the worktable that he’d transformed into a dining table.

“Done,” she said, shutting down her laptop and standing. “Thank you for all your hard work today.” As Lorenzo stepped away from the table, she said, “Lorenzo, the table is beautiful. Merci beaucoup.”

Knock. Knock. Knock.

She walked across the room as Charles signed for the room service. She opened the door. Zeus, arm lifted and fingers curled together as he prepared to rap on the door again, towered over her five seven by a good ten inches. Dropping his arm to his side, he gave her a cool nod, his brusque manner suggesting a nod was all that was needed to bridge the gap between his decision to leave her and the intervening seven years. “Hello, Sam.”

BLURB:

Sometimes the past should stay there…

The murder is one of the most heinous Brandon Fisher has ever seen, but that’s not why it has his and his colleagues’ attention. The FBI’s interested because the prime suspect is one of their own, Paige Dawson.

But Paige didn’t go to Valencia, California to kill anyone. She had set out on “vacation”—her new lover in tow—only to confront the man who had raped her friend twenty-some years ago. While the hands of the law are tied, she wants him to face the fact that he destroyed a young woman’s life and know that, as an FBI agent, she’ll be watching his every move. But instead of accomplishing her goal, she wound up in the back of a police cruiser.

Now Paige must face off with a hard-nosed detective determined to stick a murder charge to a fed. But with the trained eyes of the FBI on the case, it’s becoming more and more obvious that the evidence lends itself to a serial killing, not an isolated incident. And as long as the local authorities are focused on Paige, the real murderer is still out there, possibly waiting to strike again…

Excerpt:

MONDAY, AUGUST 24TH, 11:10 PM PACIFIC TIME
CANYON COUNTRY, CALIFORNIA

THE MARK WAS IN HIS FORTIES, had no kids, and worked a white-collar job. Average height, average looks. Nothing was truly memorable about him except for his uncommon first name, and that was only because it belonged to a character from a popular eighties movie.

Ferris Hall.

She had followed him to some honky-tonk in Canyon Country, an unsavory location at any time of day, but factor in the late hour and it was even worse. But Ferris had chosen this dive as his hunting ground. Women were easier to lure in with a little chemical persuasion, and that was easy to pass off around here.

He entered the bar with head held high, his back straight, the tease of a smirk on his lips—the end of the evening a foregone conclusion in his mind. He was sipping on his first bourbon, though he was acting as if he was on his third by slurring his words and talking loudly. He’d even thrown a sway into his swagger. Somehow he always managed to make his eyes look bloodshot, too, furthering the charade. And the women would come. And the women would fall for his tricks.

Tonight, she’d be that woman, but she’d be his last. He had to learn there was a price to pay for his actions.

She was sitting down the bar from him. Occasionally, he’d pass her a look—the predatory kind that made her blood boil. She smiled at him, doing her best to convey carnal hunger with her gaze, smearing on a seductive curve to her lips. She dipped her finger into her manhattan and sucked on it—the cherry juice sweet, the whiskey bitter.

Ferris was off his stool and sidling up her to within three seconds.

The ruse worked every time. It also helped that she exploited what nature had given her—a slender frame and shapely legs. High heels accentuated her well-defined calf muscles, and men stared when she walked into a room. When she paired even higher stilettos with a short skirt and crossed her legs, men’s mouths tended to fall open. She utilized all these virtues tonight.
She flashed another sultry smile, and he lifted his glass toward her before tilting his own back and draining it. He set it back on the bar and knocked on it to get the bartender’s attention.

“I’ll have another on the rocks and—” he rolled his head toward her “—get the lady whatever she’d like.”

Time to feign innocence and flattery.

She waved a dismissive hand in his direction. “I really shouldn’t.”

She saw the quick look he gave her glass before meeting her eyes again. “Nonsense. Please, it would be my treat.”

If she stripped his voice of its candy-coated tone, his words were pushy and controlling.

“Well”—she angled her glass, showing how little of her drink she had left—“only if you’re sure.”
If she had actually been given a chance to prove her acting skills, she could be living in a sprawling mansion by now.

“Absolutely. What will it be?” Ferris asked, a grin teasing his lips as he tugged down on his left earlobe. It wasn’t hard for her to figure out what was going on. Ferris was asking for something “special” to be added to her drink—the “special” being some kind of date-rape drug.

She lifted her glass to the bartender. “Another manhattan.”

“Coming right up.” The tender left to make their drinks, and she watched him, taking the time to calm her heartbeat and flow of adrenaline.

“I like a woman who can handle her whiskey.” Ferris was looking quite comfortable beside her now. He was fully facing her, his left elbow perched on the counter, and he wasn’t discreet about his drifting gaze, which gravitated to her thighs.

“What can I say? I’m a little whiskey girl.” The words from the country song rolled off her tongue, cinching her gut, but she had to do what was necessary to pull him in.

“Toby Keith,” he said.

“Pardon?”

“Toby Keith.” He pointed to a speaker on the ceiling. “The singer who sings that one.”

“Ah, yes.” And here, she thought she was doing well by knowing it was even a country song. She smiled at him again. He truly thought of himself as a woman’s man.

Pathetic.

“Have I seen you here before?” he asked.

She dipped her head.

“I knew it. I never forget a beautiful face. So what’s your name?”

“Names really aren’t important, are they, baby?” She extended her hand, her long, narrow fingers bowing before him in feminine elegance.

“Oh, she’s mysterious. I like it.” He kissed the back of her hand, and she was proud of herself for not rolling her eyes.

The bartender returned and placed their drinks in front of them. “Here you go.”

From her observations, Ferris seemed to keep a running tab here. Rape now, pay later?

Oh, and Ferris would pay…

“You never told me your name,” she said, falling into her role.

“Oh, I can tell you mine, but you can’t—”

“Uh-huh.” She sucked on the tip of her finger again.

“Ferris.” He still held onto her other hand, and she pulled it back shyly.

“Are you from around here?” she asked, resorting to the necessity of small talk.

“I just fly in from time to time for business.”

“Ah.” She’d have to call upon her acting skills for this performance. She knew he lived less than three miles away from this place. “What business?”

He tapped his jacket pockets, then slid a hand inside one. “How embarrassing. I don’t have any cards with me. Besides, I don’t really want to bore you. Why don’t we talk about you?” He leaned toward her and lifted his rocks glass. “To a fun night.”

“To one we won’t remember.”

They toasted, and he took a long pull of the amber liquid. She pressed her own glass to her lips and pretended to take a sip.

Q & A With Carolyn Arnold

Where do you get your book ideas?

I’ve gotten book ideas while driving, from nightmares, from seeing a place or person and thinking “what if”, from news stories, and from people I’ve met.
Do you write outline to start or just start writing?

I just start writing. Every time I’ve tried to outline, my creativity shrivels right up. I call it writing organically…going with the flow. It’s also known as panster-style.
How long does it normally take to write the book before edits?

I can write a first draft novel of 75,000 words in about a month.
Are you an indie author or mainstream author?

I think of myself as mainstream, but I’m an indie author. J

How did you get started, can you give people wanting to write an idea how to get started?

I wrote as a teenager to help manage my emotions. I started with poetry, but then I moved on to writing romance novellas. Life, however, took me away from writing for about thirteen years before I was reunited with it again in 2006. Since that amazing reconnection, I’ve never looked back. Every day has been about writing, reading, or editing.

For those of you out there who think that writing a novel would be an awesome thing to do, I say do it! It might seem very overwhelming at first but remember a book becomes that one word at a time. Set a reasonable goal for yourself—whether that be writing daily or weekly—and stick to it.

BOOK OVERVIEW

Sometimes the past should stay there…

The murder is one of the most heinous FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher has ever seen. But that’s not why he and two members of the team are rushing to California. The Bureau is interested because the prime suspect is one of their own, Paige Dawson.

But Paige didn’t go to Valencia to kill anyone. She had set out on “vacation”—her new lover in tow—only to confront the man who raped her friend twenty-some years ago. While the hands of the law are tied, she wants him to face the fact that he destroyed a young woman’s life and know that, as an FBI agent, she’ll be watching his every move. Yet, instead of accomplishing her goal, she wound up in the back of a police cruiser.

Excerpt from Chapter 4

Paige blinked the tears from her eyes. It couldn’t be. She wiped her wet eyes, her gaze not leaving the necklace in her hand. The chain was a common style, but the heart pendant and the letter N

Still, it didn’t mean this one had been Natasha’s…

Paige swallowed. But she remembered when Natasha had realized she’d lost it. She had dropped on the end of the hotel bed as if all the weight of the world were piled on her shoulders. It was the morning after the rape.

Tears now fell freely down Paige’s cheeks. There was no doubt in her mind that the necklace she now held had been Natasha’s.

Paige cried as the past washed over her and continued to do so until rage replaced her sadness.

Somehow, she would make this son of a bitch pay for what he had done. She was past the point of keeping within the shades of the law and would circumvent legal means if that’s what it took to hold him responsible.

She clasped the necklace around her neck. Had Ferris kept it as some sort of sick notch in his bedpost? If so, that showed a psychology to him that confirmed he was a repeat offender. And if that was his mentality, prison wouldn’t have rehabilitated him, and that meant there were likely date-rape drugs here to prove it.

She stormed from the bedroom and toward the bathroom.

Beyond the point of caring anymore if she left her fingerprints behind, she emptied the contents of the medicine cabinet, and his toiletries now filled the sink.

Nothing.

She rushed back to his bedroom and tore it apart. The drugs were here somewhere. A man like Ferris wouldn’t stop raping…

Several minutes passed as she searched, and when she was finished, his bedroom looked like a tornado had struck. But still no pills.

Maybe she was being ridiculous, hoping to find something where there was nothing. And even if she found the drugs, what did she hope to accomplish? While possession of date-rape drugs was illegal, her means of getting them would make them inadmissible in any court. But she couldn’t stop. All she could see was her friend’s body in that casket—the way her face, even in death, showed her tortured existence.

She hurried downstairs to the kitchen. There was no way she was stopping now.

She searched each cupboard and drawer, pulling out items and rooting to the back. She had one place left to look, and as she opened it, she saw that it was a catchall drawer. Stuffed with anything and everything from a meat thermometer, to sandwich bags, to tin foil, to… She pulled out a sleeve of pills. She flipped them and read the stamp on the silver backing. Allergy pills.

She continued working through the contents of the drawer until she reached the last item. It was an Aleve bottle. That was an inconvenient place to keep a pain reliever… She opened it and looked inside. It was only the medication. She was still holding the bottle in her hand when she recalled the one on the counter. She exchanged one for the other, not about to give up. Just because the bottle was labeled one way… She twisted the lid.

Police sirens wailed somewhere nearby, and she paused. Her instinct told her to leave this alone and get out of his house immediately. But it was too late, the whooping sirens were on top of her now, and then the patio door slid open on the other side of the dining room. Two police officers entered the house, guns drawn.

“Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Department! Put your hands on your head!”

“What’s—” The strength drained from her legs, and her head spun. She was under arrest?

Oh God. That woman must have called the police.

 “I said, put your hands on your head!” the same officer shouted.

Another officer went around behind her, stripped her of her gun, passed it off to the second officer, and proceeded to cuff her. “You have the right to remain silent—”

“This isn’t what it looks like.”

“It looks like you’re ransacking the house of a dead man.”

A dead man?

“I’m an FBI agent. I can explain—”

“You can do that down at the station.”

BLURB:

When an old friend disappears, Martin learns nothing is what it seems…

Martin Russell can barely face the future. With dismal life prospects and an estranged family, he is at the end of his rope. When an old friend, Hannah, elbows her way back into his life, Martin’s luck begins to turn around.

Hidden within the shadows of evil, there must be some good…

Ex-policeman Bobby Tanner lost everything one rage-filled night. Now he runs a reading group for alcoholics where he meets a young drug dealer, Zack, who disturbs him in a way that’s hard to define. Bobby soon discovers the teenager is in over his head and has been dealing with a despicable individual known as The Chemist.

The roots of evil run deeper than we imagine…

Martin’s lucky streak begins to unravel when Hannah suddenly goes missing, and he turns to a friend of a friend, Bobby, for help. Thrust into an underworld empire of corruption and half-truths, he learns his friend may not be who he thought she was.

In a shadowed world of deception, stalkers, and despicable drug dealers, Bobby and Martin must uncover the truth, and fast…

Several lives depend on it.

Excerpt:

Hannah asked questions quicker than she could find answers.

Why do things happen? Where do they start? Why hadn’t the cyclist seen that big pothole? Why had the van driver been so slow in reacting? Why did the police leave the diversion in force for three whole days after the accident? Why had she diverted down a side road when she could have stayed in the queue? Whatever made her look to the left when she did? Why had the car immediately caught her attention? Why did the sight of that car bother her all next day? Why had she faithfully retraced that convoluted route? Hadn’t she better things to do? Where had she found the time? Why had she stopped and got out of her car? How did she know it had to be his house? Why was she ringing the front door bell?

“Martin.”

It came across as a question, a query, an exclamation of astonishment because it was him, yet nothing like him. He had never been good-looking, but his round face had always possessed an undercurrent of charm that flickered through his eyes. Today, he was wearing old fashioned Buddy Holly glasses that hid those eyes…

His chestnut hair used to be carefully groomed but now hung in limp curls bruised by swathes of grey. His face and body hung stringily around his slack frame, and the smart designer clothing of yesteryear had been replaced by second line charity shop wear. His appearance could be summed up by a single word: defeated.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

It was a strange and twisting road that led to the publication of my first novel. From my humble beginnings, as an office clerk, to ownership of a multi-million dollar business I always maintained my love for literature.

Born and raised in Bristol, England. I spent most of my life in business, my companies turning over in the region of $500 million. The majority of that time marketing cars, eventually owning the largest Saab specialist in the world, before a bitter divorce forced me rethink my priorities. Particularly between 2003 and 2005 when I had to accept that I was no longer a millionaire but literally penniless. I avoided bankruptcy by the skin of my teeth and slowly rebuilt my life.

This led me to the life changing decision to leave the bustling city and move to live halfway up a mountain in the Welsh valleys. At the same time I started a part time six year English Literature course at Bristol University, and attended creative writing classes at Cardiff University. I left school at sixteen and this was my first taste of further education and an immense challenge.

I eventually adjusted my thinking to the academic life, and on 30 June 2015 had confirmation of my 2.1(Hons) degree from Bristol University. At the same time I also won the prestigious Hopkins Prize for my essay on Virginia Woolf and the unsaid within her text. Now the university courses are finished it will, with any luck, gives me plenty of extra time that I can devote to my fiction writing.

Thanks to the university experiences, my interest in English literature has flourished over recent years. Hopefully I have evolved as a writer from my earlier work in short stories (over ninety of them.) Although interestingly my first three novels have all been developed from a long forgotten short story.

Life is, once again, very good, and I live very happily halfway up a mountain, in the Welsh Valleys, with my wonderful partner Mari, and our rescue dog Wolfie.

She went to jail for the right reason but the wrong murder…

With her mom in the hospital from a recent attack, Kyara has to wonder if her grandmother’s recent release from jail isn’t behind it. Pulled from her quiet, content life, Kyara finds herself on a mission, not only to find out who put her mom in a coma but who just might have a lifetime of secrets to hide.

Secrets spanning thirty years may never come to light unless they can solve the deadly secret, now buried beneath the golf course and stay ahead of those trying to kill them.

How many more people will die before the lies are unraveled and those who are guilty, decide that killing an entire town, isn’t too far to go to hide their dirty past?

excerpt

When she felt a little more settled she headed back in and almost kept walking right out the front door. She’d only been home two days and already she wanted to run. Getty’s voice though stopped her cold –‘only sissies run, girl’. That had been another one of her grandmother’s favorite sayings, one that Kyara wished she could forget. Stiffening her spine, she turned and headed into the kitchen, the destruction of what she’d done, shocked her. It looked like someone was demolishing the place. She knew she couldn’t stop to think about what she was doing, instead she grabbed her pail, filled it with fresh water and set to scrubbing, behind the fridge. The floor and wall was so caked with grease and dirt, it was like a gummy glue. It felt more like she was smearing than actually making any progress. After the fifth pail of water, she could finally see the yellow and green wallpaper.Someone had drawn or written all over it. Assuming it had been her handiwork as a child, she didn’t bother to really look at, she just moved the fridge back in place.

She moved from the kitchen to the dining room but the china cabinet with all of her grandmother’s dishes, stopped her. She’d never dream of throwing those out, no matter what. Knowing that she wasn’t being fair to her mom and was partly to blame for the sad state of the place, she stepped back and turned. The door to the pantry stood open, almost like it was framing or pointing her in the direction of her mom’s blood, a congealed dark mass that made almost a perfect oval puddle. It wasn’t huge but it carried a punch. She gasped. It didn’t seem real. The truth of what it meant hit her like someone had placed their hand inside her chest and squeezed her heart.

Who would do this to Mom?

Not wanting to go near it but unable to stop her feet from taking her there, she stared down at it. A fleeting thought went through her mind, how do I get blood stains out? As she looked at the spot she was thrown back in time.She was climbing the tree in the backyard, even though she’d been told many times not to. But the one time, she’d scared a Robin, who had been nesting high up in it. The bird had dived at her. Kyara had freaked, jerking sideways, falling off the branch she’d been perched on. She hadn’t broken anything, the branches had slowed her fall but they had also provided her with her first piercings and many scrapes, burns and cuts. Her mom had to have heard her cry and had arrived to scoop her up, almost the minute she’d hit the ground and carry her inside to the bathroom. She’d carefully stripped Kyara’s clothes and cleaned and bathed all of her injuries.

Kyara cocked her head wondering why she’d had that memory. The only thing that came to mind was that her mom hadn’t hesitated, she’d done what had needed to be done.

BLURB:

When a secret webcam is found in the Georgetown bedroom of a murdered high-society call girl, everyone in Washington, DC wants the recording…especially the killer.

After a high-society call girl is brutally murdered in her Georgetown home, investigators find two cameras hidden in the walls of her bedroom. One has its memory erased, presumably by the murderer. The second is a webcam with an encrypted connection…and no-one knows who’s on the other end. Whoever has the recordings has embarrassing leverage against some of the most powerful men in DC, not to mention a video of the murder showing the identity of the killer.

FBI Special Agent Allison McNeil is asked by beleaguered FBI Director Clarence Mason to run an off-the-record investigation of the murder because of the murder’s similarity to a case she worked a year earlier. Allison knows the most direct path to apprehending the killer is to find the videos, but rumors that the victim’s client list may include some of Washington’s most powerful men makes her doubt the director’s motives. As she starts her investigation, she quickly discovers that she’s not the only one pursuing the recording…but that the most aggressive person racing against her might be the murderer himself.

Excerpt:

Allison McNeil tensed when she spotted the first shadow dart through the mist and take cover behind a tree. In the early-morning light it took her a while to pick out all six members of the Hostage Rescue Team approaching the cabin, but within a minute she could clearly see the tactical team converging on their target.

The small building stood on a rise, up from the swampy, flood-prone land around it. Wood-slated walls tilted precariously inward, twisting the windows into deformed rectangles. Moss and dead leaves covered the roof. The place smelled and looked like decay, well on its way to inevitable reclamation by the weeds and vines choking the cabin to a miserable  death.

And, if Allison was right, the place deserved what it got. Hell, if she was right, she had half a mind to take a match to the place after everything was done.

BLURB:

She should never have met up with Ryan, that’s for sure.

You see, Lucy Nevin has got something that people are willing to kill for – she just doesn’t know it….yet.

Handing Ryan the notebook threw the killers off her scent for a while but as Lucy uncovers more details about the death of her father, it becomes clear that this ruthless gang of criminals will stop at nothing to get what they want from her.

And then Dan shows up. Is that coincidence or by design? Either way, she’s now sucked into a deadly game between the killers, the armed forces and the government. They all think that Lucy has the code – the code that will give them control of the internet. The scary thing is; if you’ve ever used the internet, this is happening to you right now.

Trouble is – time is running out for Lucy and she needs answers. What exactly is the Honeydripper Affair?

EXCERPT:  From Chapter Nine

Danny looked as though he knew this was coming. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table.

“Looking back, I should have acted differently, but at the time it seemed like the right thing to do. Everything happened so fast, I honestly thought it was best to get out of your life completely before I ruined it.”

“Ruined it? Didn’t you think that just leaving might have ruined it too?”

“I figured I was replaceable.”

“That sounds like you’re doing both of us a disservice.”

“Do you remember telling me about how your mother left when you were younger?”

“Yes, I do. It’s not a story I share very often,” said Lucy, slightly confused.

“How she couldn’t handle the way of life, the constant moving, the dangers of your father’s job. Well, that’s what the future was looking like.”

“But you could have asked me. Maybe I would have been okay with that.”

“I had become a target, that means anyone close to me would have become a target too. That wasn’t a particularly attractive lifestyle to offer anyone.”

“A target?” Lucy asked. “But you work for local government – who’s targeting you?”

“Local government is just a useful cover. I work for myself now. Call me an Intelligence Troubleshooter.”

“Er…alright,” Lucy said, deliberately leaving some space for him to fill.

“I provide information to the Ministry of Defence through a satellite agency.”

“So, how does that make you a target?”

“Let’s just say I’m a hands-on operator.”

“So you’re a secret agent,” she said bluntly, with a slightly tongue in cheek smile.

“If you like, it’s a bit different in the modern world.”

“So basically, we’ve outsourced our spies!”

“Something like that. It’s more convenient this way, less difficult questions when things go wrong. Much easier for the government to distance themselves.”

“I still don’t understand how you become a target?”

“When you’re working out in the field you end up pretty close to the opposition. Sometimes it’s a physical as well as a mental battle,” Daniel explained.

“I didn’t think that sort of thing really existed; you know, all that cloak and dagger stuff.”

“It’s unpredictable, that’s for sure.”

“I don’t get why you didn’t tell me all this before.”

“It was all kicking off back then, everything was moving so fast. I was quite new to the whole way of life and I just didn’t think it was safe to involve you.”

“But you’re telling me now,” Lucy pointed out.

“Now you’re involved directly. I’ve no real choice. It’s ironic that the very thing that pushed me away has now pulled me back here.”

book blurb

Get three PI Assistant Extraordinaire Mysteries in a bundle.
More than 100,000 words, humorous mystery books.

Welcome to the glamorous universe of Kelly Kinki—yes, really! Working as a personal assistant of Michael Archangel—the hottest and the wackiest detective in D.C.—her day never ends without dead bodies…

Ghostly Murder

A murder in a locked room…The faceless ghost… Throw in a cross-dressing detective plus his assistant extraordinaire in this new mystery series!

For Kelly Kinki, working as Archangel’s personal assistant was always an adventure, one that keeps her on her toes. As the resident consulting detective for the busy Washington D.C. Police Department and the FBI, Archangel took the confusing or unsolvable situations and spun a Sherlock hue over them, finding answers amongst the clues and closing cases even the most skilled law enforcement agents found confounding. Working as both his assistant and sounding board, Kelly has an intimate knowledge of the inner workings of Archangel’s deduction, and of his fabulous closet. Not only is he a detective savant, he is also a towering specimen of a man with an appetite for women’s high fashion that could put a runway model to shame – a fact that leaves his less-fashionable assistant flummoxed, and slightly jealous.

It’s a classic ‘who-done-it’ with a not so classic answer.

Immortal Eyes

Serial murder with a sick ritual… The Dragon Lady…and the mismatched duo’s race against time…

Previously a socialite and a ‘real’ housewife, Kelly Kinki is now stuck with a dead-end job as a personal assistant to a private investigator. To Kelly, this translates as playing second fiddle to a guy who gets more cat-calls than she does.

Michael Archangel is his name, catching killers is what he does, and he does it in…well, a short skirt and high heels. As a former FBI Special Agent turned P.I., Archangel knows his way around a crime scene as well as he does the local Agent Provocateur. His game de jour is toying with Kelly, his assistant—just like cat and mouse. However, they’re a team, whether fending off rude paparazzi or manhandling the politicians, freaks, and other lowlifes roaming the streets of the nation’s capital, the two are hell-bent on finding a serial killer who is holding the city hostage.

Join Archangel, Kelly, and a host of oddball characters as they wind their way through a madcap crime thriller, with more twists and turns than a mind-bender roller coaster. Kelly’s story is filled with raucous humor and irreverent satire, so buckle up. Who’ll solve the crime, and who will take the credit? Perhaps all the investigators will get for their trouble is a full color splash on the cover of the Washington Post, “Latest Victims Discovered in Matching Frocks – One Male, One Female”.

Deadly Vision

A murder of a sweetie pie… A newbie, pathetic agent…and the reluctant mentor…

Voted #7 of DC’s Most Eligible Bachelors, now Michael Archangel—her boss—is officially the hottest PI in the neighborhood, and one of the most talented. Sought by clients and police alike for his wit and brain power, this is an American Sherlock with style – and a unique past.

The college girl was last seen at Tricky Sundae, a local ice cream shop, and then she turns up dead. This time, the case seems so normal, at first. The victim, a universally-loved college student, has been strangled. Well, maybe not so “universally” loved, since she’s dead—and that’s the weird part. Not a single person has anything bad to say about her.

excerpt

Excerpt from ‘Immortal Eyes—Book 2 of PI Assistant Extraordinaire Mystery’

When I walked to the poolside, he was in the lap pool, swimming in freestyle. He noticed me and came out of the water, and I had a seriously hard time ripping my eyes off him.

I’d never regarded Michael Archangel to be an eligible male, but believe me, with broad shoulders, Herculean chest, six-pack abs, and full of toned muscles, his body was purrrrfect. I needed a helluva lot of restraint to keep myself from drooling. In front of me stood Michael Archangel, wearing nothing other than black swim trunks. Mom was right. My employer was an alpha male, at least in the physical features department. Except I had no idea as to how she had figured out the presence of his … equipment. And frankly, I didn’t want to know.

“Hey,” he said.

For a couple of heartbeats—maybe several of them—my mind wandered off, thinking: Gosh, I want to jump his bone right now and Get a grip, Kelly. Having a crush on your employer is so awkward! It was like the moment of having an angel and a demon sitting on each of your shoulders spatting at each other. Words failed to come out of me. I was standing there like a total moron.

“Earth to Kelly.” Archangel stared down at me with a look that implied he knew what I was thinking. “Don’t tell me you’re hallucinating.” Droplets of water trickled from the knotted bun of his long hair, down to his shoulders and further to the south.

“Hallucinating? Oh no, it’s just…well, you know…looks like I zoned out a little. Maybe it’s just jetlag. Yes, it’s only jetlag. How strange! I used to fly all over the world, never having difficulties adjusting to local time, and now I’m having it for the first time. I mean, a jetlag. It’s been years since I’d last flown over the pond.” Thank God I was wearing a padded bra that worked perfectly to conceal my fully erected nipples.

A slight smile surfaced on his lips. “So what’s going on?”
